Title: ballendo salernos (or something)
Post by: Patti Feinberg on March 31, 2003, 10:31:24 PM
I was just in my DS mailbox; I decided to live on the edge and click on ballejos mr. bo-jangles or whatever (Spanish?) and I guess that's my sent messages.

It looks different; it made sure I wanted to delete all the messages, which is a good safety mode.

I laugh now; now that y'all taught me what Mozilla is, of course I'm seeing it all around!

and...tres tres...LINUX TOUT LES TEMPS!!

MB...if you run Linux...what do you do for a word processing format or a spreadsheet? (See, they've got me so far in I don't even KNOW other products!!)

Linux comes with several different programs like that. Chief among them is OpenOffice (http://www.openoffice.org/), which I haven't even bothered to check out yet because I hardly ever work with word processing or spreadsheets, but it's supposedly quite good. (OpenOffice is also available for Mac OS X and Windows users.) Linux is also capable of running Microsoft programs if users install the Windows compatibility layer, Wine (http://www.winehq.com/) - but most Linux users avoid Microsoft programs at all cost. [lghy]

So, since I'm running Windows, I could still use openoffice?

Would there be any benefits, or would there be too much on my harddrive?

Has anyone every really used openoffice?

Patti...who does not like XP word :P

All right...what did I do wrong with the quote?

All right...what did I do wrong with the quote?

When you trimmed out your part of the quote, this was left in:
Code: [Select]
[quote author=Patti link=board=7;threadid=3047;start=0#msg31003 date=1049146284]
so a closing quote tag got added to the end after it was submitted, but all that's been modified out.[/quote]

You might want to check out General Discussion on The OpenOffice.org Forum (OOoForum - which also happens to be a PHP driven forum ;)) at http://www.oooforum.org/

Corel Word Perfect has a linux version.  It's a great word processing, spread sheet, etc. package.  I've used this program for years to make my life as Microsoft free as possible.   Also, MS Word does not have the nifty feature, Reveal Codes.  A must have IMHO.   But I don't think they have a version for the Mac.  Oh well you can't have it all.

I don't know much about Macs or Linux, but I know at some point WordPerfect had Mac versions and I think they still do.  I've also heard of them in connection with Linux, but I'm not sure if there's a full operating version for it or not.

I quite agree about Reveal Codes.  Aside from not being able to figure Word out, I'm at a total loss in it without Reveal Codes and can't imagine how anyone manages.

Word Perfect Suite 8 is a full version for Linux and Word Perfect 3.51 is for the Mac.  But, it doesn't look like they have updated that one in awhile.  Corel Draw is for the Mac too.

Word Perfect has changed hands several times since it's inception and they go for different market segments depending on who is the current owner.  Fortunately, for those of us who love this program, they have not had a hostile take over by Microsoft.  I just know they would ruin it.
