Robservations #188
-
Oh, how I loved Laura's flat tone as she said, "How dreadful," upon hearing of Guthrie's death.
She's got me baffled, though. During the scene with Burke, I was ready to say that she really was sad, and that maybe there was some part of her old, human life that still had a hold on her. Then as soon as he left, she brushed her tears away quite callously.
When Roger and Burke are persuaded that Laura means to leave, Burke says he'll cancel the fishing trip with David. Vicky tells him he has to go, because - and here I expected her to say, "Because you promised David!" But no, promises have nothing to do with it.
-
The scene with Laura and Burke was great. I loved how her expression changed once Burke had left.
When Vicki leaves David's room, she locks the door behind her, even though she almost certainly knows that a mere lock won't keep Laura out.
A sign of things to come!
In the foyer at Collinwood, the wall where the portrait of Barnabas soon will appear is now empty, with only the chair beneath it. (Until this episode it held a shield with two swords crossed behind it.)
A sign of things to come!
Obviously Carolyn heard that Barnabas's portrait was ready to picked up at the repair shop, where it had been taken after some unfortunate incident, and she had Mrs. Johnson move the shield and swords back up to the attic.
The (abbreviated) "Robservations" caps have been posted. [easter_smiley]

Ha ha ha, Lydia! [easter_smiley]
When Roger goes looking for the paintings that he "bought" from Sam, they should have had him find Barnabas' portrait. Though the character may not have been cast yet.
A fourth popping-into of a bedroom... David's, again. She appears to be physically present, since she touches David.
I like everyone's speculations about a significant portrait... I hadn't noticed that space. Was it never shown before? Currently my discs end with the first appearance of the portait's subject, so there will at least be a gap of some kind before I can comment on those episodes.
-
Too bad, MT, but at least we'll have you with us before then.
I wish I could remember whether that space on the foyer wall had been shown in much earlier episodes, but I do remember noting (around these eps.) the crossed swords and the shield, all of which will reappear again in due time.
And Joeytrom, your idea is great!
-
I think I saw a mirror in that spot once.
-
I think you're right, Lydia! The mirror will return too.
-
Yes, the mirror was there as they filmed a scene with Roger and Carolyn reflected in it. Just as today Roger, Burke and Vickie drink tea at the seance table which as replaced the missing piano and writing desk for the day. Laura easily gives into leaving with no forwarding address and no one questions this. Laura appears in the dark in David's room to make getaway plans. It's interesting that a creature of the fire appears out of darkness in her teleporting image instead of a ball of flames.
-
True, a ball of flame would have been much more appropriate, but all they could afford--or do, I suppose--was just have her materialize out of the darkness.
