Title: Jonathan Frid in MERCHANT OF DEATH?!?!?!?
Post by: ClaudeNorth on February 03, 2003, 08:20:27 AM
Greetings!

According to www.imdb.com , Jonathan Frid appeared in a 1997 film called MERCHANT OF DEATH.  Is this true?  According to the plot synopsis, the film is some sort of revenge tale (protagonist's family is wiped out, and now he's mad!) and it certainly doesn't seem like something that JF would be involved in.

Anyone have any information on this film?

Regards,

John

especially, if it has nothing to do with theatre or Shakespeare.

it is a film.  if you click on the title while in IMdb, it clearly states it's a film.  but the really odd part of it is he is listed but with no credit for a character.  i wonder if it was snaps of him doing something else-like a tv shot of him playing barnabas?

yes, nancy will know....

I was wondering the same thing.  That would be rather cool to see, actually...

The IMDB.COM is not totally infallible.  I've seen a number of errors. I believe that almost anyone can add info to it's data base and no one really verifies what's there.

Can't remember where I saw it but I read somewhere  that said Jonathan Frid was one of the gangsters in the movie 'The Third Man'.  He's not in it as far as I can tell unless he was cut out.  He's not listed in the credits either.

Frid didn't appear in this film.  The only three films he has made are: Seizure, HODS and Devil's Daughter.  He played gangsters while touring in England and one of the plays, IIRC, was "The Third Man."  It was also a movie but he was not in it.

When Frid retired in 1994, refused to take on any more professional engagements including paid public appearances, barring one limited stage appearance in Ontario in 2000 for a friend's fledging production company.

Unfortanately, even otherwise reputable databases do have their errors.  There is an actor named Jonathan Fried that has caused some confusion. :)

Nancy-

Wasn't that play actually called "The Third Visitor"?  I recall that JF mentioned it in a Ron Barry interview in 1968.

Yes, Petofi, you are correct, thank you.  I had my thirds screwed up.  The play you mentioned was one of the first professional gigs he did while in England.  The confusion over whether or not JF appeared in The Third Man has been brought up before.  He didn't make any movies prior to HODS.

Frid didn't appear in this film.

should we then start a campaign to have this entry deleted from his name?

i just can't bear to have him associated with a movie that doesn't look too appealing.

Well, Frid didn't find any of the movies he was actually in too appealing after they were completed so you would not be saving him from anything from his vantage point. [lghy]

Seriously though, if you tried to correct the many errors about JF's career, etc. you wouldn't be able to stop.  For someone who spent so little time making movies and TV you wouldn't think there would be that many mistakes.  However, since this error has been noticed, I had it removed from the database. It might take a day or so before the deletion of the film is updated on the Frid profile.
