Title: 1245 Episodes
Post by: Suki on January 26, 2003, 07:49:52 PM
From the beginning I have bought 54 vols of the original series and have recorded daily to finish all of the episodes to complete the 1245. I want to know how many DS fanatics out here in cyberland that have to have every episode possible for there collection? Barnabas has to be in my life!!

I know how you feel.  I've been obsessively recording the series for years now and, with the exception of a few I missed during a couple of time changes and silly  goofs on my part, I now have (most of) the series on video tape.

Now that the DVD's are out I've decided to make the switch to that format for several reasons - quaility, durability, storage, lack of commercial interruption, and a chance to get the eps I missed in the past (since I was too dopey to write the numbers down at the time I don't even know which ones they are now!).

Regardless of whether or not SciFi plans to keep running DS in the years to come, I don't see my addiction to this show ending any time soon - so I'm preparing for the future!

Hooray for you, Suki! Welcome to the foal. I bought all the tapes from MPI several years ago (and I'm still paying off that credit card bill, lol). I consider them one of my most prized possessions. I don't get Sci-fi so I am thankful to have them to be able to participate in episodial (huh?) discussions.

Addicted? Hmm, let's see. I hadn't watched since the show went on hiatus in November. When I finally got a chance to catch up (Jan. 16) I was so enthralled that I couldn't stop watching and am now several weeks ahead of Sci-fi. One morning I watched approx. 25 episodes! I think that qualifies me as addicted. ;)

I had missed a great majority of the show as a kid and never in a million years thought I'd ever be able to see it all, never mind "again"! Watching the show from day one (my favorite episode) to the end fulfilled a life long dream I never thought would come true.

Happy, happier, happiest, Dom

PS - Welcome to the world of the posting!

Dom...you are: sooo cool for posting, since you don't watch along with us.

Can I ask....ballpark...how much $$$ did you pay and do you have ALL (the whole series, not just Barn)?

congratulations on completing your collection!

i'm really looking forward to finishing my collection of dvds.  drat, it doesn't look like we are going to get episodes 1-209 any time soon.  in the ultimate end, i would feel my collection incomplete without these.

i hope mpi will also put the early episodes out on dvd.

I have to admit, I am also guilty of taping and keeping DS.  Don't have the whole sha bam yet but am working on it.   I would love the DVD's but can't justify the expense at this time.  If I bought them I would have to hide them from my family and than I would feel like I have a real problem. lol.

Birdie--I could put the DVD's in a brown paper bag

Between taping off SciFi and buying the MPI tapes, I have all the episodes, too--except for a couple I missed when my VCR acted up and didn't tape a day.  To get even more fanatical:  even though I had all the 1897 tapes from SciFi, I broke down last year and bought them all from MPI, so I now have MPI volumes 21--55 and 93--200, and of course the first three DVD releases (which replaced my MPI volumes).  I've been eyeing the collections' series on MPI to replace my SCiFi versions before MPI takes them off the market. . .I should have bought them when MPI ran a special late last year, but my car needed repairs instead.  Of course, I'll continue buying the DVDs--they'll be my entertainment when I retire (still a good 20 years off)--just imagine me sitting in front of my TV 8 hours a day watching DS DVDs instead of going of work.  LOL.

I was wondering about this.  How much room do all these tapes take up?  Since Q started, I've been taping on SP speed and only get 4 shows per tape.  I only keep the Q shows and these tapes are piling up RAPIDLY.  LOL   Where do people KEEP all these tapes??

How much do MPI tapes cost?  I would think the price would be coming down since people are switching to DVD, no?

Yeah.  Ya know, sometime in 1969 I found myself losing interest and was watching less and less.  By the time I was a senior in H.S. ('70-'71) I wasn't watching at all.  So when I discovered DS was on Sci Fi about 3 years ago, it was like, "wow"!!  Seeing stuff from 1897 forward,  that I'd never seen before!!  A divine revelation....I must say.  ROFL  (In more ways than one)

First of all, I like the way you sign off Patti--[thumb] for KARLEN.
To save $$, I started taping DS on my own, too, but didn't like all the wasted tape with 99,000 commercials added.  So, I started buying the MPI videos a little at a time and second hand videos from anyone that was selling.  I do not have a complete set.
When they started putting DS on DVD's, I switched to buying DVD's since I knew that we'd buy a DVD player someday. I have DS DVD1-2-3 and #4 has been pre-ordered. As soon as I check all my DS DVD's to make sure they play, I'll sell the videos to whomever would like them.

Good for you, Suki!  And welcome to the DS board, it's a real hoot!

I started taping on this most recent airing of the show by SciFi.  I figured I would only keep the episodes I thought were pivotal.  Am sort of regretting that decision now, and will probably eventually purchase the DVDs.  So far I have about 300 eps on tape.

Looks like another meeting of DSA!  [Dark Shadows Anonymousse]

Hi, My Name is Ringo, and I am a Dark Shadows fanatic.

[DSA members shout:  High, Ringo!]

[Ringo replies:  How can you tell?]

I tape from Sci-fi, and have a cabinet full of tapes, all pretty well documented, with 'notes-to-self' about esp. fave episodes, ie: a flash of panties, Ben burns Angie [good burn Ben!] or the occasional missed ep. to try to catch next time thru.  The wifey threatens to clean out the collection every now and then [but she can be replaced!]  I will probably go over to DVD sometime, or actually there is gonna be a new product on the market in a few years that will store something like a hundred hours of video on something about the size of a disc-ette [and of course we will all get to buy new hardware and product again.......Capitalism, don't ya love it!]  So who knows, Richard Nixon?  Something I hate about the sci-fi tapes are the logos, and promo stuff they stick in the corners [remember the 'blow torch' thing a while back?]  So yeah, I am a taper, collector, fanatic,  er what was the question?

Wait a minute, this important message just got delivered by  flying squirrel:

Bullwinkle is a dope!

[not that message...................this message: I gotta go to bed!]

cheers,
and welcome suki,
Ringo

[jester]

ps:  ooh yeah, Birdy, hiding the tapes is one of the first signs....

Connie, I have the whole collection now from MPI which I started ordering a couple of years ago. At the time I paid $46.95 for the 4 pack tapes, which included S/H. (Columbia records & tapes were selling them at $20.00 a tape!)

I have the companion book that helps with the storyline and also Stuart Mannings website helps a lot as well! Im a old fashioned person,I have every episode on VHS.Except for the first 54 vols.. that I didnt have to record myself. I have to deal with commercials and when something messed up or SCI FI screwed up with there program scheduling.. I just called MPI and ordered a volume set so I wouldnt miss a single episode! Talk about batty!! But I "dig"these old shows!!

600 plus hours of Dark Shadows, sometimes in multiple media forms?

I wouldn't mind owning every minute of John Karlen's performances  on the show.......but the entire series?  I don't think I could justify the expense OR  find the storage space!!

I'll assume my status as a Fan has just dropped to the floor. :-/

Congratulations on getting all the episodes! I'm halfway there. I started to get tapes of episodes I haven't seen from MPI, but when I found out the show was coming to DVD I decided to stop after 23 volumes, though occasionally I will buy one.

I keep mine in those plastic storage containers you can get at Target and they're presently residing under my bed, but then half my belongings are in storage and some day if I ever get a job (two interviews this week though) I'll be buying a DVD player and junking the tapes in favor of DVDs.

I'm about half way through buying the MPI tapes...and now don't know what to do, lol.  The DVD's are clearly superior, but I don't want to just get rid of the tapes I've invested in  :-(     Such a dilemma...

A few years ago, I started to buy the VHS tapes of Dark Shadows.  I never really got into buying them, but always wish I had them all.  Plus I was only 16 at the time.

Ever since tv shows have been getting released on dvd box sets its makes it so much easier for me.  My whole collection of tv shows is getting huge.  In the last month I have order about $500 worth the box sets.  Including Dark Shadows 4.

I get excited every time I get a new box set.  And cant wait until the day I have all of dark shadows on dvd.

The way I think of them is like books.  They look good on shelfs.   Their are my pride and joy.  And one day I have a room just for them...I HOPE.

Between my brother, my daughter and myself...we have all the episodes on tapes.  Now I'm happy to announce, we have the entire collector's tapes.  We found some of the collector's tapes in the bargain bins at KMart.  I've begun collecting the DVD's.  I would hate to part with my tapes because I believe that some stuff has been edited out of the DVD's that was on the tapes.

As a side note: On the collector's tapes, you can see some of the actors in the background when they show a little blackboard that says what the show # is on it and the taping date.

One is really funny in particular and it's of Mitchell Ryan talking about how he has to walk across the room, throw his keys on a desk and get to the 'loo' to take a '.....'.  It's too bad that the DVD's can't give us more stuff like this.
Title: Re: 1245 Episodes
Post by: CastleBee on January 28, 2003, 04:41:21 PM
I know the DVD's are expensive but I'm buying them a few at a time since they started to come out last year and it really hasn't seemed too bad.  I just got a deal on the last set I ordered by using the $30 credit I received from Amazon for buying stuff in their new Apparel section at Christmas time.  I love when that happens!

Like Ringo, I get really annoyed with the silly things SciFi does (though some day it may seem nostalgic in its own way, who knows).  They seem to get more brash with it all the time too - I'm sure everyone noticed that they didn't even give Nancy Barrett time to finish her lines the other day before they shrunk the picture to the left and cut out the audio.  Gaak! Dorky stuff like that alone would sell me on the professionally recorded versions (I think we may be talking capitalism again.)

Hi Patti,

I believe I paid 4k for the series - give or take. I'd hate to think of how much I've actually paid since I am still paying it off! I started purchasing my collection with the Collector's Series.

Connie dear, for you I measured the space my tapes take up, at 6AM, before my second cup of coffee! If that isn't love, I don't know what is! :-* Two deep (library style) they take up just under eleven feet.

Good luck with the interviews, Luciaphil!

This may sound morbid but I'm making damn sure my hubby doesn't throw out all my DS stuff when my time comes. I've added a codicil to my will so that all my DS stuff(DVD's, videos, fan fiction collections like TWODS or Karlenzines)are donated to my local library for other DS fans to use.  With a reasonable donation, they should stay on the shelves for a few years--I hope.  If not, they could always get rid of it at their yearly Book Fair.
As long as it's not at the town dump, I'll be able to RIP.
Othewise, I may be haunting someone.

I hear you, Carol. I don't have a formal will but I do have instructions on what is to be done with the hoards of stuff I've collected over the years. I know a lucky tofu Queen in Boston who is going to get all my DS stuff if I should go before she (which is likely, seeing how she leads such a saintly life :-*). What I am not giving away I want sold with the proceeds going to the charity of my choice. Of course there are a few things I am taking with me (regardless of how the saying goes...) ;)

Thanx for asking dom. I didn't post my post-op recovery from October's surgery because I thought it was too off-topic.
At the moment, eyesight in my right eye is slightly "off ". I can see but not as well as my left eye. I had further laser surgery in December and retinal specialist still wants to do a vitrectomy(removal of remaining fluid). I did get a second opinion & was advised to wait--to let body reabsorb fluid at its own pace. I'm not eager for further invasive surgery unless it is absolutely necessary and as long as my vision hasn't gone downhill from visit to visit then I will wait. Next recheck is February 18.

Ya know, that may be a good point about the 'nostalgia' factor' [can you imagine ever referring to THESE as the good old days???]  I tape Black and White Overnight on Game Show Network, [to tell the truth, what's my line, I've got a secret - all great classics!] and one of my fave parts of that is the 'promos' that sneak in at the end of the shows for 'the Red Skelton Show' or 'Pete and Gladys' - and the commercials for 'Pssst!' deodorant and Prell concentrate! and that they give away cartons of ciggy's!

And not having the collectors series [the horror!] I never knew about the missing bits - that alone would be worth keeping those for!

And I think the 'squeeze' on Nancy/Chastity's lines the other day was an operator error at the 'home office' 'cause they did pull back and let the scene finish.  Probably a former pilot at the board at sci-fi!

[hello][hello] I have taped DS two times round now. At first I taped DS and Falcon Crest (any guesses why?). That was great, but I wanted to separate the stories, and I don't like retaping to another generation tape.
Solution:  Be at home when I do it and take one tape out, and add the other one when it comes on.  I was able fortunately to get all the way through FC this way and have a great set of these tapes.  Am still plugging away on DS.  Since I work part time now, I can't change tapes, so I am glad that I completed my FC tapes first.  In the meantime, I have gotten about 30 MPI tapes, and have never opened one yet.  I'm just waiting until I get a complete set and then my husband and I will have one more "film festival"!   He thinks it is silly, but he goes along with my obsession, except when I have nightmares, and he can blame it on Barnabus or Quentin.  My tapes take up one whole wall in a small bedroom in my house, and the ones left over from other shows are stored in boxes,  in closets and under the bed.  I love it!  So glad to chat with other folks who feel as strongly as I do about DS and company.

I'm counting on the continuation of the DVD collection to complete mine. Although I've seen DS several times from beginning to end, I can't say that I've seen EVERY episode. I've forgotten to set th VCR, wasn't home to tape, etc. So I'm looking forward to completing the set. OH yes-----I'm addicted------but it's so much fun!

Something I hate about the sci-fi tapes are the logos, and promo stuff they stick in the corners [remember the 'blow torch' thing a while back?

Their new logo really sucks. I didn't mind the see-through planet Saturn but this new one is so intrusive. Also, the lettering is odd and it doesn't read "Sci Fi" very clearly. The first time I saw it I figured it was an ad for some new kind of fancy bottled water or something.

Wow, this is a hot topic!  I to am in the process a completing my collection.  Had I started saving the tapes when I started watching again a couple years ago I would be done by now.  But in the beginning I didn't save the tapes.  Then I got completely addicted and taped the 1840 PT time storyline and was thrilled to then start taping from the first episode.  I'm especially glad to have these since I don't know if they will release them on DVD.  I tape my own also to save $$$'s and space.  I buy 8 hour tapes and tape at extended play so I get 16 episodes on a tape.  That's the only way I could see doing it.  I only buy the tapes if I'm missing an episode and currently I think I am only missing 2 episodes.  (I need to order the tapes)  They have some very compact VCR racks that hold 50 tapes and don't take up much room so I'm on my second rack.  I also label each tape by # and list the episodes on them.  *Occasationally, I'm lucky enough to catch a DS actor in another show and put those on my DS tapes too.  The lastest catch was Jim Storm on the soap B & B.

However, I am also investing in the DVD.  I love the clarity and extra interviews.

I am also one of those fans that wants  every episode. I haven't collected them on DVD., but I have recorded ALMOST every episode. There was a time when I missed 2 episodes due to weather making the cable go out. So I missed some. I want to get them on DVD...but they just cost too much. Maybe they will drop in price and then I will be able to collect them. I was also one of those that would rush home from elementry school to watch DS. Came on right after General Hospital at 3:30,,....then changed to 4.

I should be receiving Volume 6 & 7 of DS on DVD tomorrow so my collection is slowly building.  I think this next time I am gonna save up enough money though to buy at least five at a time.  I would really like to get caught up with the WP because my tapes are shot.   I have too thought of who I will leave all my cherished DS merchandise too.  Sometimes I wish I had a child to pass the show on to, but he or she may not even like it.  Hopefully this is a long way down the road as I am only 31!  However, should something happen, my DS stuff is to go to one of my friends who loves the show and I recruited years ago. ;)  Now who gets all my Charmed, Buffy and Angel memorabilia is another question! :P
