The website comingsoon.net has a new poll lower right side asking what summer 2012 release you anticipate the most. http://www.comingsoon.net/index.php
So far DS is not scoring well.
-
Thanks for the link, jimbo. [hall2_smiley] And DS certainly isn't doing all that bad right now - here's the current top 10:
The Dark Knight Rises 43.0%
Marvel's The Avengers 24.2%
Snow White and the Huntsman 9.0%
Dark Shadows 8.9%
Prometheus 4.3%
The Amazing Spider-Man 2.1%
Men in Black 3 1.4%
The Expendables 2 1.2%
Abraham Lincoln: Vampire Hunter 1.0%
G.I. Joe 2 0.9%
And I can't say that I'm surprised to see DS behind those particular top three. Tons of people are going to be anticipating The Dark Knight Rises. Marvel's The Avengers is also highly anticipated - especially given the fact that the films featuring some of the individual characters have already done really well. And, well, Snow White and the Huntsman stars Twilight's Kristen Stewart - need we say more? [hall2_wink]
That being said, though, I don't put much stock in polls that are set up the way this one is because it's too easy for the same person to vote multiple times (I know because I simply used my browser's back button to vote twice). So, anyone with enough time on their hands could make any one of the films on the list place better than it might otherwise. And if there's a group of fans who want to do so, well, that's all the more easier.
-
I may have voted once or twice... It's true what you said about the other highly anticipated movies. In fact at Yahoo has as one of its top news today that the new batman movie started shooting today. I hope DS has a good showing. I would have been disppointed if the movie wasn't listed at all.
-
Actually, perhaps Kristen isn't as powerful as I thought. Even though DS' percentage has dropped (mostly because The Dark Knight Rises' percentage has risen), DS is now #3:
The Dark Knight Rises 44.6%
Marvel's The Avengers 24.0%
Dark Shadows 8.2%
Snow White and the Huntsman 7.5%
Prometheus 4.5%
The Amazing Spider-Man 2.3%
The Expendables 2 1.6%
Men in Black 3 1.3%
Abraham Lincoln: Vampire Hunter 0.9%
G.I. Joe 2 0.9%
-
And what was I implying about a film suddenly shooting up the list because someone or an organized group of someones decides to vote for it:
The Dark Knight Rises 44.1%
Marvel's The Avengers 22.8%
Brave 7.2%
Dark Shadows 7.2%
Snow White and the Huntsman 4.5%
Prometheus 4.5%
The Amazing Spider-Man 2.4%
The Expendables 2 1.7%
Men in Black 3 1.2%
Abraham Lincoln: Vampire Hunter 0.8%
Brave, which was nowhere to be seen in the Top 10 even an hour ago and didn't even have a full percent is now suddenly tied with DS for 3rd.
-
Now the reboot of Spider-Man has suddenly jumped up:
The Dark Knight Rises 42.8%
Marvel's The Avengers 21.0%
The Amazing Spider-Man 8.6%
Dark Shadows 7.4%
Brave 5.3%
Prometheus 4.2%
Snow White and the Huntsman 3.5%
The Expendables 2 1.9%
Men in Black 3 1.1%
The Bourne Legacy 0.9%
Though DS has improved its percentage.
Who knows which fandom will be next to start voting en masse? [hall2_rolleyes]
-
Almost at 4,000 votes. When I posted the poll earlier today I think it was less than a hundred. I wonder how long this poll will be running. I don't see the Dark Knight or The Avengers coming in any less than second place. I believe The Avengers is going to be released a week before the DS movie and Men In Black III on May 25th. Let the battle begin. Good time for fandoms.
-
who besides "us" is so eagerly awaiting this release?
is it just depp's huge fanbase?
-
That's fascinating about all the hoo-ha over that Batman movie. I really couldn't care less about that one. Same goes for Spidey and the Marvel "Avengers" schlock-a-rama.

[female_skull]
DS isn't doing badly--#4 out of 10, way ahead of established franchises like Bourne, Men in Black & Stallone. And it's head-to-head with the next Pixar!
-
[candle_in_skull]
DS is now #3.
-
I don't see the Dark Knight or The Avengers coming in any less than second place.
No, it definitely seems like they're locked in at #1 and #2. In fact, it seems like the Top 10 has pretty much been established now with just a couple films moving up or down a spot here and there:
The Dark Knight Rises 46.7%
Marvel's The Avengers 21.5%
Dark Shadows 7.5%
The Amazing Spider-Man 6.0%
Prometheus 4.3%
Brave 4.1%
Snow White and the Huntsman 2.2%
The Expendables 2 2.1%
Men in Black 3 1.2%
The Bourne Legacy 0.9%
The big surprise for me is how far down Snow White and the Huntsman fell after being at #3 when I first checked the poll yesterday...
-
That's fascinating about all the hoo-ha over that Batman movie. I really couldn't care less about that one. Same goes for Spidey and the Marvel "Avengers" schlock-a-rama.
Chances are very good that the majority of the people voting in the poll are in the 12-17 and 18-34 demos, and those films definitely appeal to them. And considering those are the likely demos, it's interesting that DS is doing so well. But then, as micheal_c mentioned, it's quite possible that a lot of Depp fans are voting for it. [hall2_wink]
-
It's interesting the only films whose percentages seem to have gone up in the past four hours are the top three in the poll and The Expendables 2 - though it only went up a tenth of a percent and was able to jump up from #8 to #7 mostly because Snow White and the Huntsman continues to lose percentage:
The Dark Knight Rises 47.3%
Marvel's The Avengers 21.7%
Dark Shadows 7.8%
The Amazing Spider-Man 5.6%
Prometheus 4.2%
Brave 3.6%
The Expendables 2 2.2%
Snow White and the Huntsman 1.9%
Men in Black 3 1.2%
Abraham Lincoln: Vampire Hunter 0.9%
The Bourne Legacy slipped out of the top 10 and Abraham Lincoln: Vampire Hunter slipped back in - but they were both rounded off to 0.9% last time around, so their change is minimal...
-
It's interesting that the same films still seem to be the only ones with any significant increase in their percentages:
The Dark Knight Rises 48.4%
Marvel's The Avengers 22.3%
Dark Shadows 8.0%
The Amazing Spider-Man 4.7%
Prometheus 4.3%
Brave 2.7%
The Expendables 2 2.4%
Snow White and the Huntsman 1.5%
Men in Black 3 1.2%
Abraham Lincoln: Vampire Hunter 1.0%
Currently the poll is just shy of 11,000 votes. And like jimbo, I wonder how long the voting is going to go on - especially considering that the order seems to be pretty much locked in...
-
[hall2_smiley]
It's really impressive that DS is scoring so much higher than Stallone or the next Pixar.
-
And like jimbo, I wonder how long the voting is going to go on - especially considering that the order seems to be pretty much locked in...
Well, if DS' percentage keeps climbing like it seems to be, maybe we should hope that voting in the poll stays open for quite a while longer. [hall2_wink]
The Dark Knight Rises 49.0%
Marvel's The Avengers 22.2%
Dark Shadows 8.3%
Prometheus 4.4%
The Amazing Spider-Man 4.3%
The Expendables 2 2.6%
Brave 2.2%
Men in Black 3 1.3%
Snow White and the Huntsman 1.2%
Abraham Lincoln: Vampire Hunter 1.1%
(Now it seems like it's Brave and The Amazing Spider-Man, the two movies that initially shot up from out of nowhere, that are losing percentage along with Snow White and the Huntsman. And it'll be interesting to see if the poll lasts long enough for The Dark Knight Rises to possibly hit 50%...)
-
Who knows which fandom will be next to start voting en masse? [hall2_rolleyes]
Apparently that would be The Expendable 2 fandom, as within the past couple of hours they've sent that film shooting up the list - and have it threatening DS' #3 placement if it continues to surge:
The Dark Knight Rises 46.5%
Marvel's The Avengers 21.1%
Dark Shadows 8.0%
The Expendables 2 7.4%
Prometheus 4.1%
The Amazing Spider-Man 4.0%
Brave 2.1%
Men in Black 3 1.2%
Snow White and the Huntsman 1.1%
Abraham Lincoln: Vampire Hunter 1.0%
Not to mention sending The Dark Knight Rises percentage plummeting...
-
I just voted! So glad to see DS in 3rd place! YESSSSSSSSSSSSSSSS!!!! [hall2_grin]
-
[hall2_smiley]
Still in third place, DS is now up to 9.5%, I think the film is going to do fine.
-
It's still at 9.5% now, which could be considered a good sign:
The Dark Knight Rises 45.1%
Marvel's The Avengers 20.8%
Dark Shadows 9.5%
The Expendables 2 7.4%
Prometheus 4.8%
The Amazing Spider-Man 3.8%
Brave 1.8%
Men in Black 3 1.3%
Snow White and the Huntsman 1.0%
Abraham Lincoln: Vampire Hunter 1.0%
And with the poll currently at 18546 total votes, that means DS currently has about 1780 votes. But as I cautioned at the outset of this topic, that doesn't necessarily mean that 1780 people have voted for DS - it could just as easily be 100 people who've each voted about 18 times - or even 10 people who've voted 178 times each. That's the problem with the way the poll is set up. But still, it's nice to see that there are people out there who are motivated to try to keep DS at #3. [hall2_smiley]
-
It seems like some group connected to The Expendables 2 has organized some sort of voting campaign for it because its percentage is quickly on the rise again. However, it also seems like some DS/Depp fans are fighting back because its percentage is also rising, though not as quickly:
The Dark Knight Rises 44.6%
Marvel's The Avengers 20.5%
Dark Shadows 9.8%
The Expendables 2 8.2%
Prometheus 4.7%
The Amazing Spider-Man 3.7%
Brave 1.8%
Men in Black 3 1.2%
Abraham Lincoln: Vampire Hunter 1.0%
Snow White and the Huntsman 1.0%
It'll be interesting to see if TE2 does eventually overtake DS...
-
It'll be interesting to see if TE2 does eventually overtake DS...
Well, it most definitely has:
The Dark Knight Rises 41.6%
Marvel's The Avengers 19.2%
The Expendables 2 12.4%
Dark Shadows 10.1%
Prometheus 5.5%
The Amazing Spider-Man 3.4%
Brave 1.7%
Men in Black 3 1.2%
Abraham Lincoln: Vampire Hunter 0.9%
Snow White and the Huntsman 0.9%
And to say that it's extremely suspicious how that suddenly happened in the space of only a few hours would be an understatement. But that's the sort of thing that can happen with a poll like this - especially if someone uses voting software to hijack a poll rather than relying on human votes. [hall2_shocked] [hall2_angry]
Now it will be interesting to see if DS can retake #3. But somehow I doubt it given how whoever is behind TE2's rapid rise is playing...
-
That is so suspicious. I can't see many people having such a passion for another Expendable movie but I could be wrong.
-
Having just sen the latest percentages:
The Dark Knight Rises 36.7%
Marvel's The Avengers 19.4%
The Expendables 2 17.3%
Dark Shadows 11.9%
Prometheus 4.8%
The Amazing Spider-Man 3.0%
Brave 1.4%
Men in Black 3 1.0%
Abraham Lincoln: Vampire Hunter 0.8%
The Bourne Legacy 0.8%
I'm more convinced that ever that someone has hijacked the poll using voting software because the total has jumped more than 6000 votes in less than 9 hours - and with the exception of DS (which has climbed some due to what is no doubt a valiant effort of some DS/Depp fans) every other films' percentage has fallen - and TE2 percentage has skyrocketed from 8.2% to 17.3, which would have taken the vast majority of those new 6000 votes. So, unless we're talking some huge group of TE2 fans sitting at their computers constantly voting for hours, there's no way that was humanly possible.
I'm not exactly sure how the voting software works or even where it can be found, but when I used to visit SoapCentral.com on a regular basis back when As The World Turns was still on. there were constant complaints that trolls would hijack polls using such voting software - and quite often to make the least likely result end up on top by a wide and inhuman margin. Things got so bad that Soapcentral.com finally had to abandon the polling system they were using, which, like ComingSoon.net, allowed for multiple votes from the same person, and instituted a polling system like we have here on the forum where only registered members who log in can vote and they're completely limited to only one vote per poll. And if such hijacking of polls is routinely allowed on ComingSoon.net, well, it makes the results of their polls highly questionable, which is sad...
At the rate TE2 is going, it doesn't look like it'll be long before it even overtakes Marvel's The Avengers - and possobly even The Dark Knight Rises. [hall2_rolleyes]
-
Well they've shot past Marvel's The Avengers because of another nearly 3000 votes made in just the last hour - though MTA seems to be trying to fight back:
The Dark Knight Rises 33.6%
The Expendables 2 21.2%
Marvel's The Avengers 20.9%
Dark Shadows 10.8%
Prometheus 4.4%
The Amazing Spider-Man 2.7%
Brave 1.3%
Men in Black 3 1.0%
Abraham Lincoln: Vampire Hunter 0.7%
The Bourne Legacy 0.7%
But really, can shooting past The Dark Knight Rises be far behind? [hall2_rolleyes]
-
I apologize if I'm stepping on somebody's toes, but don't all these online "polls" turn inevitably into a dead heat with rival gangs of fans madly banging away to try and prove that their stuff is The Top?
I just doubt whether there is much significance to any of this outside a highly rarefied circle of ... individuals.
YMMV, of course and always.
cheers, G.
-
Possibly. I honestly don't take part or even pay attention to most online polls, so I can't really say. Though there is a big difference between humans battling each other to get whatever their fandom wants to see get the most votes (there's fairness in that) and one individual using voting software to do it because voting software can cast votes far faster and with far more frequency than any human possibly can (and there's no fairness in that - not even if other fandoms resort to doing the same thing as a means of trying to level the playing field).
Actually, I wondering if whoever was using the voting software overstepped themselves because ComingSoon.net seems to have crashed - and it's quite possible that the voting software crashed it because that's definitely one of the potential disadvantages to it if it's used for too long a period of time...
-
Thanks for the explanation, MB. I know nothing about voting software or why anyone would create such a gizmo... kind of funny if you're right that the robot wound up wrecking the site! That's some kind of poetic revenge.
As the "Wicked" Witch of the West was once heard to bemoan: "What a world, what a world!"

I see that TE2 is well on its way to becoming #1 (and probably will become #1 before the day is out if what went on yesterday is any indication - as it is another 6000 votes were added overnight!), and considering how far down it was for the vast majority of this poll's run, that definitely seems inherently wrong:
The Dark Knight Rises 31.2%
The Expendables 2 29.6%
Marvel's The Avengers 18.8%
Dark Shadows 8.9%
Prometheus 3.7%
The Amazing Spider-Man 2.3%
Brave 1.1%
Men in Black 3 0.9%
Abraham Lincoln: Vampire Hunter 0.6%
The Bourne Legacy 0.6%
On the plus side, however, even though DS is now #4, its current percentage is still pretty much in line with what it had been throughout a good portion of the poll's run (whereas the other films' percentages have fallen dramatically) - and it probably will climb again as well. Though given what's happened with TE2, the credibility of the poll is pretty much shot to hell now...
-
I guess one person/computer per vote is the way to go. Not sure if the voting software can get around that restriction. There is no way on earth that Expendables 2 should have an 11% lead on The Avengers which is truly one one of the most anticipated movies in 2012. Kind of surprised MIB3 is doing so poorly. Hope its producers aren't looking at this poll for what it's worth.
-
I guess one person/computer per vote is the way to go. Not sure if the voting software can get around that restriction.
If a site has a polling system similar to what we have here, there's no way to get around one vote per poll per member because the system keeps track of which members have voted in which polls and kicks them out if they could even try to vote in the same poll again. And that's the way it should be. Unlimited voting for anyone/everyone is simply ridiculous because there are too many underhanded people out there. I mean, TV shows like American Idol and Dancing With The Stars allow multiple votes per person, but they only allow a limited amount of votes per phone number/e-mail address - can you imagine what the results would be like if they allowed unlimited votes per person?! Or if a country's political system allowed it??!! [hall2_shocked]
-
I couldn't agree more MB. The purpose of a poll is to get an accurate reading on the question/issue. This particular poll is now worthless.
-
Expendables shot up to #2, but it hasn't affected DS' rating at all.
-
Interesting - it looks like DS' percentage has hit a new high:
The Dark Knight Rises 34.5%
The Expendables 2 26.1%
Marvel's The Avengers 17.8%
Dark Shadows 12.2%
Prometheus 3.0%
The Amazing Spider-Man 1.9%
Brave 0.9%
Men in Black 3 0.7%
The Bourne Legacy 0.5%
Abraham Lincoln: Vampire Hunter 0.5%
And The Expendables 2 hasn't become #1 (yet). In fact, The Dark Knight Rises also seems to have rallied. Though none of that makes the poll any better than it was yesterday. Its credibility is still pretty much worthless. But it is nice to see that TDKR and DS/Depp fans weren't about to give up without a fight. [hall2_smiley]
What's also interesting is that the skirmish up at the top of the poll (which has brought the total votes to almost 44000, 90.6% of which are spread over the top four!) has really done a number on every film from seventh place on down, as they're all now fractions of a percent...
-
I think the poll will help DS at the box office: when people see that it's polling high above so many other titles, including Pixar, it'll make them curious about it.
-
The poll has concluded and unfortunately I cannot find the results at the website. I shot off an email to the website but I would be surprised if I got a response. In any event the poll was compromised as we discussed.
-
I looked at the poll yesterday morning and DS was still in 4th place with 11.1%. I don't remember the exact percentages for the top 3, but The Expendables 2 had slipped to 3rd with 22.?% and Marvel's The Avengers had regained 2nd with 23.?%. The Dark Knight Rises was still 1st with 33.?%.
-
Thanks MB. It would make sense if the website kept the results of the last poll up for a week.
