Title: (**3 BONUS SCENES-See reply #39**) Ghost Hunters go to Collinwood!
Post by: borgosi on August 23, 2011, 11:06:22 PM
On 09/07 at 9PM on the SyFy channel the Ghost Hunters will visit Collinwood! That's right we will learn if Seaview / Collinwood is haunted. This should be cool. The episode is titled "Dark Shadows"!

Very interesting. I've been there, and I did sense ... a presence.

There is a legend which I am sure will be re-enacted in the usual lurid style preferred by these programs.

I look forward to the thoughts from anyone who gets to watch it.  If it is available for online streaming, please let us know!

That is so weird because just this morning I was trying to google to see if they had ever done a show on Seaview.  I believe they are from the Rhode Island area.  It will be fun to watch just to see the house.

They do have episodes on they web-site but I don't know when new shows get put on it.

I have been to the house also. It will be fun seeing what parts of the house are shown. I hope they go in the basement.

When I visited Seaview, I also felt the presence of things that were frightening and terrifying, enough to make you break out in a cold sweat and feel absolute fear.

Oh, wait, that's when it was still filled with college kids.

Never mind.

Definitely cool. And the house does have a reputation for being haunted as it's included in the book Haunted Newport.

I can't say I've ever felt anything when I've been in the house, though there was one odd incident when I heard strange sounds in the house while I was there completely alone for a few hours back in August of '99. Why I was there alone for so long is a really long story not worth going into completely, but I was expecting to meet some friends at the house but they were long delayed. And while I waited I began to hear what sounded like furniture being moved around or something being dragged along the floor in the hallway above and around the foyer. And it couldn't have been students because as he was leaving the building for the day, the head of Salve's music department specifically told me that I was going to be the only person left there because no students would be moving in yet and the cleaning ladies were off that day (so I had to make sure that I locked the door if I decided to leave because my friends didn't arrive before I had to go). And as the sounds persisted, curiosity eventually got the better of me, so I went up to the second floor to look around and even called out a few times - but no one was there - and there wasn't a sound from anywhere in the house while I was up there. So, I went back downstairs. Who knows what had been going on? But maybe Ghost Hunters will be able to answer that question.  [ghost_grin]  Though maybe I don't want to know the answer.  [ghost_wink]

Urgent Dark Shadows with Ghost Hunters Adam Berry and Amy Bruni (http://www.thedeadbolt.com/news/1000974/urgent_dark_shadows_ghost_hunters_adam_berry_amy_bruni.php)

Hmmm - what they heard sounds bizarre...

[spoiler]Maybe the sounds I heard were the ghostly dump trunk picking up ghostly old furniture.  [ghost_cheesy][/spoiler]

The television show Ghost Hunters, which airs on Sci Fi, will be airing an episode where TAPS investigates Seaview next week. Obviously Dark Shadows is mentioned as having been "filmed" there. Just wanted to let everyone know. I'm super excited to see what, if anything, happens during the investigation! The episode airs on Wednesday at 9pm.

The trailer suggests a whole lot of nothing happens, if the most exciting thing they could come up with was some girl giving a little shriek because a door slammed.

This has the potential to have some great images of our favorite house, but I am afraid the photog will wind up being the usual sick-making swirl-and-jerk through the ringer merry-go-round on speed expected, seemingly, by today's audiences.

Excuse the snark,

G.

I don't expect them to find anything. I will be watching to see which rooms they say are "haunted" so I can make my own search when I return in a few weeks. Even if they find nothing I will enjoy seeing a house I know as well as I do that house on TV. I have talked to Denise Carey about the house being haunted, my next visit I want to check out the rooms where she has seen/heard things. I hope to see something that I can not explain. As for "Ghost Hunters" we're all just have to wait and see.

I'm totally fascinated by "ghost hunting," while at the same time I'm totally skeptical about their existence (and I've done a few "ghost-bustings"), and that's what I like about their show.  They actually don't try to engrandize things; they go a supposedly haunted place and try to disprove all the claims and in many, if not most, cases, they do just that.  They do not use "sightings," or "soundings," including their own, as proof.  If it isn't fully and clearly recorded, it's not evidence.  The ironic thing is that on most of their shows, they come up with virtually nothing and declare a place "not haunted."  One would think, with the lack of the sensational, the program would be a bomb (watching them traipse around and end up with nothing concrete, or even exciting, shouldn't be an audience-grabber).  But I think it's because of their skepticism of a claim and their thoroughness, mixed with the rare, occasional recorded happenings (such as the sliding folding chair in the attic of that famously "haunted" lighthouse) that keeps people coming back for more.  The audience is intellectually challenged, but when that rare "proof" is there, it's a shock.  It's like a good horror or scary movie becomes a success.  If stuff is shown all the time, it becomes blase.  If nothing is ever shown, even in a small glimpse, it's pointless.

Is our "Collinwood" haunted?  I doubt it.  Let's face it - other than college students behaving like typical college kids, nothing "horrific" ever happened there.  So why should it be haunted?

If I'm given a choice, when I die I plan to go to Seaview. So, even if it isn't haunted now, it will be.

I hope they do find something so I can look for it next time I'm there.

It was interesting to see the modern Seaview interior and exterior--primarily the foyer and tower room.  But the program as a whole I found boring and insufficient to draw my full attention--they walk around, hear and feel things that the audience doesn't for an entire hour.  The scariest part for me was the asbestos in the basement, which made me also wonder if there might also be toxic mold spores, lead paint, or other realistic horror for this couple to deal with in trying to restore the mansion.

I'm not a big "Ghost Hunters" fan but I loved the show. I know the house inside and out because I visit them twice a year. I just enjoyed seeing the house and friends of mine on TV. Do I think the house is haunted? If Denise and Chris say they saw those things then I believe them, I just wish that I could.

I've spent hours in that basement and I don't believe there is anything dangous in it.

Where it was very cool to see a video tour of our own Dark Shadows mansion, I thought the antics of the ghost hunters was borderline silly.

Well, I definitely found the show a lot more interesting than some, including that reviewer found it. But then maybe that's because I've had a more than 40 year relationship with the house, I've been inside it on several occasions, and I'm familiar with all of the rooms that they checked out. I do have to stress, however, that during the vast majority of occasions I've been inside the house, I've never experienced anything out of the ordinary - save for that one time in '99. And I have to say that when the two main investigators also heard noises coming from the same second floor area of the house that I'd heard noises from in '99, it honestly freaked me out. There's really nothing up there except for mostly a corridor, the entrances to dorm rooms #207 (the second floor of the tower) and #206 (a very small room over the main entrance to the house which also happens to be the same room that we see David looking from the window in Ep #15). Though the other thing that's also up there is the entrance to the suite of rooms that the Careys always used when they stayed in the house back then (a suite that was always locked and completely off limits) - but the same suite that's referred to in the show as the Bradley Wing because Mrs. Bradley had used it, which is a fact I was completely unaware of until Denise Carey mentioned it on the show. And I also have to say that fact, combined with the supposed hauntings of the house by Mrs. Bradley and Denise Carey's and her fiance's remarks that they have also heard strange sounds from that area of the house, helped to freak me out even more than just seeing the investigators hear noises coming from the same area that I did because now I know it's a real phenomenon and not just something that I heard that day but couldn't explain.  [ghost_shocked]

And BTW, I actually used that first floor ladies room on that day in '99 because it was the closest bathroom and I was the only one in the house. And come to think of it, I didn't start hearing noises until after I went to the bathroom there. Maybe Mrs. Bradley was upset with me.  [ghost_grin]

I enjoyed the episode (because I do enjoy GH) and it was fantastic to see so many rooms and corridors and even the basement.  Many of them looked like the various stage sets on DS.  But is the place haunted?  Like I've mentioned, I'm a skeptic and did a few ghost huntings myself and even experienced some of the same "phenomena" presented on the show (the sounds especially).  I've always found a logical explanation and from my own evaluation of the evidence presented about Seaview, I believe I could simularly dismiss all they experienced and even recorded.  I'm surprised they didn't come up with logical answers - maybe they did off-camera, but on-camera there has to a bit of "excitement" to keep the audience's attention.  I did note, however (unless I missed it), they did not say at the end that Seaview/Carey/Collinwood is haunted.

I just realized that the sound they said in an interview was the loudest evidence heard inside Seaview and which sounded "like a dump truck or something" was never even mentioned on the show. Odd...

I might be able to answer that, MB, from my own ghost hunting experiences.  First of all, what they said might not be completely factual but rather an exaggeration.  Even though the cast of Ghost Hunters are, for the most part, critical of claims of hauntings and spend time debunking claims (from watching the shows, they declare close to 90% of all hauntings "unproven" - they even did it with this one with regards to our beloved Collinwood [they never concluded it was haunted]), it's still a show that survives because of ratings.  I would not take their claim without a grain of salt.  I don't blame them - they're paid for this, and Sci-Fi (or SyFy, which I hate) gets money for this.  We're all trying to eat, pay bills, and be able to get stuff we otherwise could not afford with a little extra in the paycheck.  Second, "ghost hunters" (I'm an amateur among them), knows from other ghost hunters that a ghost (meaning the spirit/soul/whatever of a dearly departed) cannot effect something beyond human abilities.  Humans cannot stomp around like dump trucks; neither can ghosts.  Third, sounds, especially in large houses, can be exaggerated because of "travelling sound."  Stuff acts like microphones and can enhance sound.  Fourth, and this goes with the third, animals living in urban areas are everywhere.  When they crawl or walk around, they can be heard, and the sound of their scuffling is enhanced through structures, like a a tuner struck against a surface.  When the team climbed through the trapdoor and found only a roof, any animal that might've made the sound would've run (or flew or whatever) off.  I once was involved with an investigation in a "haunting" that included the same type of sounds.  What caused them?  Racoons.  In my own house, there were sounds emanating from the ceiling and walls.  Ghosts?  No - squirrels.  Critters are ingenous in making themselves at home in your home.

Ghosts are fun.  The episode was fun.  DS was fun.  Imagine if Stokes, while helping the beleaugered Collins family, had said:  "Quentin is not haunting Collinwood.  You've got a family of possums living in the rafters."  There wouldn't have been a DS for long.

Well, I'm only 15 minutes into the DVR of the show, and (get ready to throw all your rocks at me), I am not convinced of anything like ghosts or spirits in the house (or of the "ghost hunters" abilities to find any such thing.) I'm sure it is a great money-maker for SyFy, and with this particualr show, for Ms. Carey---to help her and her fiance to restore the mansion (and I don't begrudge her efforts to that end!)  But ghosts?  I don't think so (although the Ghost Hunters are very good actors).

My atheistic opinion...LOL.

I missed it the first time, but it was on again this morning. Not exactly my type of show, but it was thrilling to see the interior. I've never been inside before. And although I wished the investigators would shut up, this was my Halloween treat. What a beautiful mansion.
