Title: Marvelous in MAME
Post by: Midnite on November 11, 2002, 06:04:26 AM
I hope ProfStokes and victoriawinters had as much fun as I did at Mame.  I'm looking forward to reading your reactions and reports, ladies, on everything from the play and Selby's performance to meeting him afterwards.  Did he come out to the lobby to meet you?  (He said the backstage area was too small.  They saw the afternoon show yesterday, btw, whereas MsCriseyde and I attended in the evening, as did our friend VampiRich as well as Marcy Robin, Kathy Resch, and their friend Pam.)

I'll write more about it when I have a chance, but for now I'll just say that his singing blew me away, his energy on stage and when he met with his fans was an incredible sight to behold, and to paraphrase a friend, ohmygodhewassogorgeous.

He mentioned that LP and KLS attended Friday's performance, and that Johnny Karlen had also come to see him!

Thanks for mentioning that John Karlen came to see David Selby's performance, Midnite.  Glad to hear that he's feeling up to attending the theatre. :D

I really shouldn't be doing this because I have papers to grade before class tomorrow, but what the heck.

I've scanned the cover of the Mame playbill and the backstage pass Cabrillo Music Theatre created for David's fans and uploaded them to my site.

Hopefully, I'll be adding more stuff soon.

One thing that is missing right now that might be useful is a synopsis of Mame from Musicals.Net:

http://musicals.net/cgi-bin/synopsis?sn=52&show=Mame

And, yes, I did snicker every time they mentioned that Burnside's plantation was called Peckerwood. It's my new favorite word. ;-)

You lucky gal!  Thanks for filling us in Midnite.
It must have been great to hear David sing too.

Also, it's great to hear that John Karlen was up and about and able to enjoy the show.  Im glad he's doing well!   Thanks! :-)

And I'm patiently (yeah right) waiting for people's reports.  Good, bad, or indifferent...I want 'em ALL !!

I had to head out this morning before I could mention that there are two photos of David in addition to the one above that I have now uploaded to the site.

Click the link banner below and follow the link from the What's New section.

I cropped myself out of all the photos just because I am not keen on plastering my own face all over the site, but, since someone suggested posting this here, here is one of the few shots from the batch where neither of us is gesticulating wildly and blurring up the shot or blinking:

Wonderful picture...glad you did put it here.  I think this one is even better than some of the Hartfords, and even the ones in the Rotunda.

And where is a certain other picture I have seen, of another ravishing woman dressing up The Man's arm?

Mmm!  Yeah - pretty colors in that dress.  What I wanna know is...what are they saying?  Is she grabbing his sleeve?  Can't tell.

Maybe she's telling him a joke...
"Yeah, so listen!  Get this...get this..."

No, I think David is asking her:
"So, why did you shout out my name during the first act??"
Criseyde:  "I couldn't help it!  It just slipped out!!"

Anybody have any other ideas?  Maybe Midnite knows.

It sounds like your group had a wonderful evening, Midnite!

I attended the Saturday matinee of Mame along with victoriawinters and two other members of the Shadows in the Sun fan club.  I had never seen Mame before and wasn't familiar with the story, but I really enjoyed the show.  Some of the songs are still stuck in my head.

I didn't realize that David's character was in the show for such a short time, and his character's exit cast a bit of a damper on the play.  He did make the most of his time though.  As soon as he took the stage, he enjoyed a loud burst of applause, and not just from our section, so there must have been a number of other Selby fans in the audience too.  Selby played the role of Beauregard Jackson Picket Burnside with verve and comic flair.  For those unfamiliar with the story, Beau Burnside is Mame's Southern suitor, the master of Peckerwood plantation.  Though Burnside is from Georgia, I thought Selby's accent sounded a bit more Texan (but as a yankee, what do I know?)  Even singing with the rest of the cast, Selby's voice remained audible and distinct.  (However, I'll leave the commentary on his singing to the better-qualified victoriawinters)

When the show ended, the four of us went downstairs to the first level of the theater (though not backstage) to meet with Selby.  Another group of people was there at the same time, and from the way they were talking with David, it seemed like they were friends of the family.  David politely divided his time between them and us.  Although he seemed a bit tired, he did sign several autographs and posed for photos.  victoriawinters asked him if he was sorry that he wasn't in the show for a longer amount of time, and David replied that playing Beauregard was basically a chance to get his feet wet and he was having a wonderful time with the role.  After a few minutes, he left to rest for the next show (the one that Midnite & co. saw.)  Suzy Stokey, the friendly assistant producer who had helped us arrange to meet David, said that the Cabrillo Music Theater hopes to have David in several future musicals.  It's just a matter of finding him in the right parts.  Hopefully, everything will work out and we'll be able to see him again before long.

I'm glad to hear that David Selby was so good in MAME, but since the name of the show is MAME--who played the title role?  A star?  Also, just because I'm curious, was this a professional production (i.e., full Equity contract) or a semi-professional or community theatre show, with David on a special Equity contract?

Thanks,

Brian

(BTW--both y'all ladies look great in your pics with Selby!!)

Amanda McBroom, cabaret performer, songwriter and recording artist, played Mame. She has her own home page at:

http://www.amcbroom.com

The show had 3 Equity actors -- Selby, McBroom, and Joy Claussen as Vera Charles.

It was presented by Cabrillo Music Theatre, the resident musical theatre company of the Thousand Oaks Civic Arts Plaza in association with the Gold Coast Performing Arts Association.

Cabrillo Music Theatre's web site is:

http://www.cabrillomusictheatre.com

And there are links to reviews and other blurbs about the performance on my site.

And here's a worthless Dark Shadows related note. Michael Maitland, who played one of the Leviathan twits, appeared in the original Broadway production of Mame as little Peter Dennis, the young boy in the final scene.

Yes to the grabbing his sleeve question, though that was either right before or right after the picture was shot.

As to what was being said at precisely that moment . . . could've been talking about my teaching gig, could've been making a wisecrack, could've been shushing him for going on about my web site to everyone in earshot, or could've been talking about the recent nastiness I had with AOL over something related to the site.

I was not pointing at my middle and saying, "Do you think this dress makes me look fat?" That much I can say for sure.

Thank You ladies for your pics and accounting of our beloved Selby in Mame!

Prof. Stokes, I think you should have your own Forum Title as Official Correspondent for Fests and other DS happenings.  Your writing is colorful and chock full of detail.  You make the reader feel as though they were there!

Cris.....I think I told you before...I love that dress!  You look so excited to see Selby.  What a cool pic!

And Midnite...THAT is such a great pic of you and our beloved!  You are positively glowing!

While he looks great no matter what he's wearing, that sweater is especially attractive on Da Man!

What a thrilling experience for y'all!  I am thoroughly envious! ;)

Sincerely, Thanks again for sharing with all of us!

Hey Midnite, have you got your little hand on his little tummy??  (Ah...What a nice place to be.)

I can't get out of this thread.  These pictures of Midnite and Cris with David are just precious.
MORE please!  I wanna see more of Criseyde's dress, and David's pants too.  They look like black jeans.  Are they?  Ya know, I think he should do jeans commercials.
Midnite, are you wearing black, or is it like a dark maroon color?  I can't tell.  You look lovely.

MORE PICTURES!

Hey, ya know what?  Someone should put a book together with tons of pictures of David and his fans.  It could be called something like:

David Selby:  It's A Tough Life
-- A Pictorial View of David Selby And The Broads Who Love Him

LOL -- how does that sound?

-------------------------------
PROFSTOKES:
Thank you soooo much for your report.  I love it.  Your writing is absolutely flawless (and so damned professional!).  Ya know, you should be a journalist.  Your writing is as good, if not better than anything I've come across in newspapers.  It's very comprehensive and elegantly written.
But let's get down to IMPORTANT matters, shall we??
Did you get any pictures with David?  If so I wanna SEE them!  Are there any of victoriawinters and David?
--------------------------------

Anyway, I want to see more pictures of David and Cris - particularly any of him with his arm around her (that she can't go and cut herself out of), more of them chattering away, [argue] ALL pictures of Midnite and David, all pictures of him and anyone else, or him and a chair...(you get the idea).  There now -- that's not asking too much, is it?  LOL   No rush of course.  ;D

One more because you asked, but that's going to be it, and the answer to the jeans question is yes they are black jeans, or were quite a few washings ago anyway.

first time i ever wanted to see Mame!

To be honest, I was skeptical about how much I'd enjoy the 3-hour play since Mame isn't a favorite of mine either, and despite receiving 2nd billing I knew Selby's role wasn't large.  But I was pleasantly surprised to find that time flew by and that I enjoyed it all so much.  And like ProfStokes, I still catch myself singing a few of the songs.  The credit goes to this production-- the performances were outstanding, and some situations were handled very humorously.  (I'm dying to find out what happened during the performance that ProfStokes saw in the manicure scene involving Mame and Beauregard; we saw Selby laughing obviously under the face towel and drape.)  Apparently [composer] Jerry Herman had attended the opening night performance, and I'm sure he was quite pleased with it.

And then there's the Selby factor:  His was a standout performance, and who knew he was such a fabulous singer?  His voice was so clear and his energy so high that, as ProfStokes said, he could be heard over the chorus, and we're talking about an unusually large cast for a play, at least so I thought.  The theater was quiet when he first appeared on stage, unlike during the matinee, but there was some yaying going on during his curtain call.  His smile instantly widened; I think he heard us... er, them. ;)  Oh yes, and his costumes-- I was especially fond of the jodhpurs (thanks, Bette) and black riding boots that he had on when kneeling to propose to the title character.  Of course there was also the obligatory white suit of the Southern plantation owner which his tall, slender frame wore wonderfully.

Producer Suzy Stokey was SO pleasant, and Selby was extremely gracious and friendly when greeting us after the play.  Because we were in an accessible part of the lobby, others wandered over to speak to him too, but he saved the best for us and that was a thrill (though actually, it was MsCriseyde that he was excited to see).  I've spoken to him in autograph lines before, but it was much different to be introduced to him (thank you, sweetie!), and for anyone that has never had the pleasure of gaining his attention, when he speaks to you his eyes look intently at you, all blue and sparkly and... what were we talking about again?  Oh yes, I do remember babbling something to him about how he's not supposed to have so much fun up there, which made him laugh and talk more about how he enjoyed doing the play.  Here's some fabulous news-- he said he's taking tap and singing lessons to help prepare for the future musicals that ProfStokes told us about.  Oh, and did I mention that he looked GREAT??!!

There were a couple of great poses that he did for ShadowGram that I hope came out well for Marcy.

His hair was dyed a very light brown. It actually looks darker in a lot of the photos than it really was, and some of the gray is still visible.

As for the makeup, it looked to me like he had wiped it all off, and I was up in his face. ;)

This is the second time I've seen him following a performance when he was really on his mark and he knew it too, and he just positively glows . . . or maybe his face was just reflecting Midnite's glow and my glow. LOL

LOL. The slut slit? That dress has them on both sides.

I was trying this dress on when I was at home over the summer. My mother likes it. My father finds it a tad scandalous, which probably means I am doing something right. ;)

I got several compliments on that dress. I may just have to find an excuse to wear it every day.

And, yes, the rumors that I was wearing fishnet stockings are absolutely true. That started out as sort of a dare/joke when I wore the dress to the Fest banquet, and now it's a necessary part of the outfit.

Gotta break out of the school marm clothes every so often. ;)

Unfortunately, Midnite's photos don't show the boots she was wearing. They were awesome.
