Title: O/T Jonathan Harris aka "Dr. Zachary Smith"
Post by: yendor on November 04, 2002, 07:11:03 AM
Well, another icon from our youth has passed into Infinity...Jonathan Harris, who won the hearts of Baby Boomers everywhere with his portrayal of "Dr. Smith" on "Lost in Space" died today. I'll have more details soon.

Harris was a character actor from TV's golden age, having appeared on such genre shows as "The Twilight Zone," "Bewitched," and "Land of the Giants." But it was his towering (and hilarious) role as saboteur/coward Zachary Smith that earned him true immortality.  Rest well, Jonathan.  There'll never be another one like you!

Oh, the pain...the pain...

My two favorite characters when I was a kid were both portrayed by actors named Jonathan.  Jonathan Frid played Barnabas and Jonathan Harris played Dr. Smith.  I still enjoy watching both actors in the parts that made them famous.

I got to meet Jonathan Harris in 1986, at the first fan convention that he ever attended.  He was a very warm and funny man, who enjoyed sharing his memories of Lost in Space with the fans.  It was a small event so it made it much more informal.  I will always remember that event as special.

Then last year, I finally had the opportunity to meet Jonathan Frid at the Dalton Georgia show.  I had always wanted to meet him as well and that finally happened thanks to a very good friend online.

Most kids grow wanting to meet their favorite actors, but few get the chance to do so.  I got to meet 2 of my 3 favorites, and that is really something.  The 3rd was Lucille Ball.

I am saddened to hear of Jonathan Harris' passing, but we were very lucky to have had him with us as long as we did.  From what I have read, elsewhere tonight, he would have been 88 on Nov 6th.  He will be missed, but through reruns and videos, the joy and laughter he brought the kids of the 60's will continue on forever.

Thanks for the report, Yendor.

Dr. Smith is my alter ego. My friends just have to hear that I'm on my way to visit and they instantly become Dr. smith clones. It's hysterical. I end up getting dirty looks from their spouses upon my arrival, but it's well worth it. LOL.

I believe it is Gothick who has some fabulous Jonathan Harris anecdotes. (Sorry to put you on the spot, Tuffie darling. It is you, isn't it?)

Lost in Space was thee show when I was in grammar school. Those closed v-neck pullovers were all the rage.

Rest in peace, Dr. Smith/Mr. Harris, and thanks for the warm and wonderful memories...

Dom (Who in grammar school played hopscotch & jump rope with the girls - ah, those were the days...) ;)

Well said Raholt. I met Mr. Harris at a Chiller Theatre Convention on Halloween Day in 1998. I too found him to be very pleasant and willing to share memories of his time on Lost in Space. Below is a photo I took of him on that day four years ago.

Very sad to hear this news.  I'd come to think of Jonathan Harris as indestructible after seeing him in action at a couple of autograph shows 7 or 8 years ago.  He had the most unflappable energy.  Magnificent.  The voice was still very much there; the way he told his stories was dramatic and beautifully paced, but to the untrained eye, not "practiced" or seeming rehearsed at all.   His dark eyes twinkling with wit and sometimes, delightful malice as he retailed some tidbit or let fly a choice four letter word, invariably coming like a spicy amuse-gueule at the end of some impossibly fruity, flamboyant phrase.  After spending half an hour or so listening to his stories, one had no doubt that he put a hell of a lot of himself into the notorious Zachary Smith.

I'd always assumed that dear Jonathan was in my "family" so was quite surprised when I learned he was married and has a son, I believe, living somewhere. Of course, in the bad old days, everyone got married, and Jonathan would sometimes lob wicked innuendoes in the direction of a wide eyed sweet young thing (who often turned out to be not so sweet) to make sure everyone stayed on their toes.

As I've told several friends, one of my favorite memories is of Jonathan at a 1995 Boston Lost in Space cast appearance.  A break was ending in the autograph signing and they needed all the celebrities there so the signing could start again.  June Lockhart was missing.  Jonathan grabbed the mike and uttered these words, which rolled with exquisite and mellifluous modulation around whatever sports center/shopping mall it was where the show was happening in suburban Boston: "June Lockhart wanted to the podium instanta! Now get your ass up here, honey, pronto!"

I'm not sure she ever forgave him for that.

I could use some help on this.  Has anyone read this somewhere besides a fan site?  I can't find a thing in the LA Times or NY Times sites or on any of the large entertainment or news sites...

Hi Midnite,

One of the reports I read said that he just passed this morning (day of the New Moon ... how fitting), which would account for why the big media organs haven't picked it up yet.

About a week or so ago when the late Harry Hay (founder of the Mattachine Society, the Radical Faeries, and more or less grandfather of the Gay Liberation movement) passed over I heard it first from people who knew people who knew him.  The news did not get posted in the national news media until a day later.

I am on a Lost in Space email list, with connections to many LIS organizations and they reported his death last night, saying he died at about 6pm Eastern Time on Sunday Nov 3.

Like Midnite I have not been able to find any media reports about  his passing, but I must admit having the same problem for the first couple of days after Dennis Patrick died.  Part of it is that these people are part of popular  nostalgia, but not thought as popular today.  The media isn't as anxious to talk about a star of 30 years ago (heyday of his fame) as they would be if he had been in the limelight today.

Also I read today that he was in the hospital and died in his sleep but apparently details about what was wrong with him aren't being released.  One of the leaders of the email list said she knew he had been having health problems but had been asked not to talk about them.  Apparently that is a request of the family.  She also stated he had been schedule to attend Chiller this year but had had to cancel.

There is a finally an article about Jonathan Harris's death on Yahoo.  I sent it to Midnite to see since she was the first to mention not seeing anything about it.  It stated that he died Nov 3, 2002 of a blood clot to the heart, while in the hospital for treatment of a chronic back problem.  All I could think about when I read this was Dr. Smith and his constant complaints about his delicate back.  I think seeing this in print finally made it real for me.  I hate to know he is gone but I am glad that he went peacefully in his sleep.

Also I have found out tonight that the reason for so little info being in the press about Jonathan Harris' death is that the family wished it to be handled very low key in the media until after his funeral on Wednesday.  I can understand the family's wishes at a time like this but while I understand not give out exact details of the arrangements, for fear there would be people crash the funeral, fans are only human and they wanted to know what happened to him.  I think what was released, giving a brief bit of background info and the cause of death was very appropriate to both honor the wishes of the family and needs of the fans.

This was posted on the Lost in Space list that I belong to.  It is Jonathan Harris' official obit and it contains a couple of surprises, even for die hard fans.

JONATHAN HARRIS
(November 6, 1914 - November 3, 2002)

Jonathan Harris, known to millions of fans around the world as TV's Dr.
Smith from the now-classic sci-fi fantasy series Lost in Space (1965-1968)
died suddenly near his home in Encino, California, following a brief
illness.  The 87-year-old actor was a veteran of hundreds of stage,
television and film performances, including memorable guest appearances in
shows like Twilight Zone, Bewitched, and Battlestar Galactica and films such
as A Bug's Life and Toy Story 2.  But it was as the cowardly, flamboyant,
but always lovable Zachary Smith that Harris will forever be remembered.

Born on November 6, 1914, as Jonathan Charasuchin, Harris was the second of
Sam and Jennie Charasuchin's three children.  The family lived in a
six-story tenement building in the Bronx and endured an ongoing struggle to
make ends meet.  By the age of 12, Jonathan contributed to the family
finances by working as a stock boy at the local pharmacy.  Though the family
did not enjoy many of life's luxuries, Sam Charasuchin, a Russian-Jewish
immigrant, taught Jonathan to appreciate the arts by exposing him to opera
and taking him to performances at the neighborhood Yiddish theater.  Soon,
Jonathan realized his love of acting and began self-imposed and self-taught
training to rid himself of his New York accent and dialect.  At the age of
18, he legally changed his name to Jonathan Harris, but afraid of his
parents' disapproval, he did not alert them of his desire to perform.

In 1932, Harris enrolled at Fordham University and graduated four years
later with a degree in Pharmacology.  In 1938, he married his high school
sweetheart, Gertrude Bregmen.  The two shared an elegant, sophisticated life
in New York, a far cry from Harris' meager childhood, but still feeling
unsettled in his career, in 1939, Harris engineered a phony resume and
auditioned for the repertory company at the Millpond Playhouse in Roslyn,
Long Island.  After his acceptance into the company, Harris spent the next
year playing supporting roles in 16 of the group's productions.  Soon, his
ambition led him to Broadway, where he starred in Gilbert Miller's
production of Heart of a City after only three years of performing on stage.
In 1946, he starred alongside Paul Muni and Marlon Brando in A Flag is
Born and gave such a stirring performance that he finally received his
father's blessing to continue his acting career.

Harris also made notable appearances in the feature films Botany Bay and
Catch Me If You Can.  The latter filmed in Cuba during the coup that
propelled Castro to power.  The new dictator seized the film, and it was
never released.

Throughout the 1950s, Harris guest-starred in dozens of television
productions, including Lights Out, Studio One, Kraft Television Theater and
Zorro (opposite Guy Williams), to name just a few.  In 1959 Harris was cast
as Bradford Webster, opposite Michael Rennie's Harry Lime in the television
version of The Third Man, loosely based on the Graham Greene book.  It was
here that Harris honed his persona as a highly sophisticated though
always-sardonic personality.  An amalgam of the larger-than-life actors and
actresses with whom he had worked in the theater (Tallulah Bankhead, Paul
Muni, Martita Hunt, John Carradine, etc.), this stylish persona also served
Harris well for the two years he played Mr. Phillips, the imperious hotel
manager on the short-lived sit com, The Bill Dana Show.  It was this role,
as well as Harris's growing reputation for a no-nonsense always-on-time
professional, that brought him to the attention of producer Irwin Allen, who
in 1965 was scouting around for the perfect actor to play the nefarious
saboteur, Dr. Zachary Smith in Lost in Space.

After briefly considering other actors like Caroll O'Connor and Eddie Albert
for the part, Allen chose Harris, who, within weeks of the show's premiere
in September 1965, had all but stolen the show from co-stars Guy Williams,
June Lockhart, Marta Kristen and Mark Goddard.  With the aid of a
bubble-headed robot (called "Robot") and child actors Angela Cartwright and
Billy Mumy, Harris added new dimensions to the Smith character, making him
more lovable and childlike in a way that endeared him to fans, but often
infuriated his fellow actors.  He would often rewrite his own dialogue and
gave numerous suggestions to Allen and the Lost in Space creative team.
Nevertheless, when Harris would occasionally solicit Allen's approval for
his antics, he was encouraged by Allen's response: "Do more!"  Harris's
scene-stealing was further rewarded by the consistently high ratings the
series achieved during its three-year run, and during its continued
popularity for nearly four decades in syndication and on cable.

Rather than hiding from his small-screen alter ego, Harris loved the
character he had created and wore it proudly throughout the balance of his
career.  During the 1970s and 80s, he continued to appear in featured and
guest starring roles on television (Bewitched, Land of the Giants,
Battlestar Galactica, etc.) and in regional theater (The Man Who Came to
Dinner, A Christmas Carol, etc.).

Throughout the 1990s, Harris enjoyed the enormous resurgence of interest
audiences around the world were beginning to show in Lost in Space and,
particularly, in his Dr. Smith character.  Although he declined to appear in
the Lost in Space feature film produced by New Line Cinema in 1998, Harris
was a frequent participant at countless sci-fi conventions and personal
appearances, most notably the 25th and 30th Anniversary Lost in Space Cast
Reunions held in Boston.

In 1998, Harris, reprised his Dr. Smith character in a one-hour television
special entitled Lost in Space Forever.  Co-produced by Twentieth Television
and New Line, the syndicated special was hosted by John Larroquette and
co-starred Bill Mumy.

Although virtually retired from the screen in his later years, Harris
delighted in performing voice over roles in dozens of animated children's
cartoons for television (Problem Child, Freakazoid!, etc.) and was a
featured contributor to the Walt Disney Productions/Pixar Studios-produced
feature films, A Bug's Life (as "Manny the Praying Mantis") and Toy Story 2
(as "The Fixer").

At the time of his death, Harris was preparing for his return to television
as Dr. Smith in the upcoming NBC television movie, Lost in Space: The
Journey Home, to be produced by Fox Television Studios and Synthesis
Entertainment.

Harris is survived by his wife of 64 years, Gertrude, his son Richard, his
daughter-in-law Lynnelle, his granddaughters Melissa and Vanessa, and his
sisters Rosalie and Allene..  Services will be held at 10 a.m. on Wednesday,
November 6 at Westwood Memorial Park, in Los Angeles.

Thanks for posting that Raholt.

Other than being able to look at the gorgeous Guy Williams, for me, the best reason for watching Lost In Space for me was seeing the antics of Mr. Harris as Dr. Smith.  The exchanges with the robot were the best part of the show.

Yes, Brian, please accept my condolences, as well.  I lost my pet of 15 years on September 4th. She was a Blue-Point Siamese named "Saphire," but we all called her Saphy (and variations thereof). It was very, very difficult for me to put her down, but she'd suddenly developed Diabetes, and I could not regulate her. I spent July and August trying to do just that, but on Labor Day, she suddenly took a turn for the worse. She left my world two days later.

I've had many pets in my relatively short life, but never one as playful, sweet, and completely endearing. I'm thankful that she was healthy and happy for most of her life.

Time will be your friend, Brian.

Rod

PS:  And I must also echo everyone's sentiments about Jonathan Harris. Lost in Space was one of my favorite shows as a kid--I remember being in such a quandry because Batman came on during the show's first half-hour on Wednesday! In those pre-VCR days, I was frantically cranking the dial back and forth!

My favorite Dr. Smith episode is "The Keeper," starring Michael Rennie. I also enjoyed the one (can't remember its name) where Smith finds some kind of alien object that conjures up riches. He's sitting there surrounded by opulence when the alien who owns the device shows up to claim it. Priceless!  Who can forget Smith's screams? Of his evil grin? I loved him!

Thank you very much for your kind word regarding my loss of my dear cat Willie. Wille had a life long urinary track problem (although this is not what did him in). This ment lots of special attention and care. This made the bond even greater. However was was very strong and I marveled at his athleticism. In his prime he was a trim 13 pound cat. I believed he could have weighed 18-20 and would not have been obease.
He died at 5 pounds. A few more days and he would have lost his dignity, but that did not happen.
I still have his litter-mate, Molly, who to me is feline perfection
Thank you for your well wishes,
Brian

Thanks, Cassandra B (I assume there's also a Cassandra "A" running around here somewhere!). Like Brian's pet, my kitty lost weight alarmingly. Last December, she weighed a healthy 11 pounds, and this Labor Day, she weighed 5 pounds. She felt like a feather in my arms. It was a tough decision, but I knew it would come one day...and I had to do right by my loving pet.

When I look back on her life, I remember the early days most clearly. She was so incredibly rambunctious and never lost that playful "kitten" demeanor. Plus, Saphy was vocal, which I love. My sister has a Persian cat who's "silent," or so it seems to me...!  I'm also a "hands-on" pet owner who believes in playing and inter-acting with his animals. Not a day went by where I didn't tell my pet how much I loved her. And now, she's gone...but at least I know she had a wonderful life and more than probably outlived all her siblings.

To Rod and Brian, you both have my sympathy.  I tend to stay up late and often the house cat, Thumbelina (she's the real ruler in our house; we just live there because she enjoys our company) is often the only one around when it's empty and quiet.  Her tranquility and playful joie-de-vivre have beguiled many an otherwise dull hour.

I hope that your memories will bring you both some consolation.

Bri & Rod - my deepest sympathies go out to you (and to all who have lost their babies). I became a first-time cat owner a few years ago. A friend had to give Yoda up and I took him in. I grew up in a cat-avoiding family, and was taught that a cat simply can not be trusted. I got so lucky in that I adopted the most wonderful easy-goinng cat on the planet. I loved him so much that he changed my perceptions and I took in two strays (much to his majesty's dismay) a year or so later. We're all one big happy family now. I know one day they'll be gone and the thought just kills me. I'm so sorry for your pain as I know it must be 1000 times worse than just the thought.

Sincerely,
dom

Rod and Brian, I too want to extend my sympathies for the loss of your kitties.  "Original" Minja went to the Rainbow Bridge a few years back and that devastated me.  She was a beautiful calico and had tufts on her ears which suggested she may have had Turkish Angora somewhere in her lineage.  She would come when I whistled and would jump in my arms and give lavish "kitty kisses".  During the last years of her life my husband, who loved her too, developed horrible cat allergies and we now have a cat free house (grumble).
But we do have 4 Shetland Sheepdogs.   (overcompensate much?)  Jody, Chelsea, Monkey, and Buzz. (See how I worked the DS topic here?)  I've shown Jody and Chelsea to their AKC Companion Dog titles.  Buzz will start training next year.  I am Buzz's breeder and also owned his Mom, my beloved Brie.  Tragically, a cartiledge embolism went to her spine when she was 2 1/2, paralyzing her.  I had to send her to the Bridge, a day I still haven't fully come to terms with.  The 2 year anniversary of her passing was Oct. 18th.  I see a lot of her in her son.  Her expressive eyes, her joy of living and love of flying (these dogs don't jump, they fly!)  Anyway, fellas, my heart goes out to you....those little guys really are family aren't they?

Ringo I really love little Felix!  Esp. love that eyeliner thing he's got going!  A very attractive quality of tabbies!
Oh and Dom....whoa!  What a beautiful group shot!  Esp. love Yoda's deep seal point masking.....totally beautiful!  I have always loved Siamese cats!  I bet Bobbie and Yoda can be quite vocal too!

Everyone hug your pets esp. close tonite!

And rest well Jonathan Harris.  You will be greatly missed.

here is one of our Felix!

This is gorgeous Ringo!  And Felix look just like my "Baby Brow"  What a cute face!!

Rod, Brian  Minja, sorry to hear of your losses.
These animals are just like part of the family to us.
You never forget them.  I lost my FiFi some time ago, She was a beautiful Angora orange & white cat and to this day I still think of her, but with time it does get better. I know this sounds strange but once in awhile when Im sitting here alone, I swear I can see her darting past me.  She'll always be in my heart!

Cassandra, I cannot tell you how many times I've experienced the same thing as you--out of the corner of my eye, I think I see my little pet.  Or I'll come across something of her's--a toy, a brush with her hair on it--and I'll get the weirdest feeling. The other night, I was at my computer (where she would always demand the most attention), and I turned--for a brief second, I thought I saw her lying on my bed! I think these moments are our pet's way of letting us know they're still here, they're still very much a part of our lives.

And Minja, I'm glad you brought up Rainbow Bridge. When my cat was first diagnosed with Diabetes, all the info I found on the net was pretty dismal. One of the things that lifted my spirit was Rainbow Bridge, a beautiful essay that I recommend to anyone and everyone who's ever lost a loved pet.  When I read it initially, the tears were running down my cheeks--and my cat was still alive! Later, after she'd gone, I read it again...and instead of crying, I found peace.  It's a very effective tribute to a loved one.

Thanks for all your kind remarks, everyone. I'm grateful!

Rod

Reading through this thread, and also thinking of Dennis Patrick's recent passing, I thought you all might enjoy this:

I had forgotten about the connection between Dennis Patrick and Jonathan Harris with that episode of Lost in Space until I saw that picture.  I don't know why because I knew he had guest starred in that episode.

One note to add about Jonathan Harris.  A few weeks before his death, A&E had finished work on his biography for the program Biography.  It was originally scheduled to air in June of 2003, but now because of his death, has been rescheduled for the Wednesday before Thanksgiving.  Thought I would pass this along for anyone interested in see it.

Thanks Raholt for this info.  I enjoy watching the Biographies on A&E and try to watch it when I can. I'll be looking out for this one.   How ironic how they just finished it a few weeks before he passed away.
Thanks again. :-)
