So, the next Fest is being held at the Marriott in Brooklyn. I must confess that I'm a bit disappointed--I was hoping for a return to the Marriott Marquis in Times Square. Being within walking distance of all the Broadway theatres is a definite plus.
Not so suprisingly, there's no word on what that "first time ever, extra-special surprise" is.
In any event, I'm looking forward to attending and maybe this time, I'll get to meet some of the fine folks who post here.
Take care,
John

Not so suprisingly, there's no word on what that "first time ever, extra-special surprise" is.
It probably is where the event is being held-Brooklyn Marriott Hotel. I think this is a first;)
-
BROOKLYN?? I gotta drive to Brooklyn??? What will they think of next?
I think I know what the surprise is. Everyone will be treated to a tour of Karlen's boyhood home.
No...wait...I know what the surprise is.
DS CELEBRITY MUD WRESTLING.
Karlen vs. Selby (ding!)
Second round: R. Davis vs. Marie Wallace
Third round: Special guest, J. Frid vs. L. Parker.
Wagering is encouraged. Proceeds go to charity.

Two days after Fest:
SHADOWGRAM UPDATE:
ShadowGram is pleased to report that Roger Davis is out of the hospital and home, resting comfortably.
When reached for comment, Davis revealed...
"I lost a spleen, one kidney, and my liver, but it was worth it!"
END OF UPDATE.

I always wanted to go since I got into Dark Shadows when I was 16. I really thinking about going next year.
-
John and Gianni (oops, didn't mean to be redundant), I hope you both decide to attend next year!
-
I really want to..but a little nervous about the whole thing. Everyone seems to know everyone there.

Gianni,
There are always dozens of new people attending every year, so please don't think that everyone knows everyone else. And we usually try to figure out some way for the people on the forum to meet up with each other at some point during the weekend, which is a nice chance for both new and seasoned Fest attendees to meet and get to know the new friends they've made online through the forum. So, please know that we'd love to see you there. ;)

thanks!!!
I am looking forward to it. Plus I always wanted to go to New York

Well, if I go, I won't really know anyone there either.
Maybe those of us who don't know anybody should all get together and form one of those infamous "cliques" we heard about recently. LOL

PS Now watch...no one will want to be in a clique with me...(lost at a cold, cruel DS "pick-up" Fest of shame and desire)

VAM, as I know doing proper research is very important to you, I encourage you to share the research you evidently have done already on whether or not the money designated for charity at the festival really goes there. I'm sure you would not just have publicly accused someone of "stealing" unless you had hard evidence to back it up. The reason I am curious is that I know of people who actually did check into it and found the festival has made ongoing designations to charities over for many, many years.
And I'm confident that you don't have one source but several since you only recently stated you prefer having more than one source of information and I know none of them are from the internet. You mentioned not caring for that resource.
So please share your findings here since many here do attend the festivals and pay our admission being under the impression that proceeds to go to charity.
Thanks very much. Looking forward to the information you have. I'm always prepared to change my mind when shown evidence of wrongdoing.

Nancy,
Apparently, you don't know me and see that I am just having a little bit of FUN with that comment. If I had a serious accusation to make it surely would NOT be here. Hmmm...Looks like I am misunderstood and I think I will terminate my posting on this board, where there is no sense of humor.

Oh, me too John! I just knew it would be there - so much for psychic abilities. Anywho, it won't keep me away if there is any possible chance I can go.
Wouldn't it be wonderful if there were some way to have it in say - Newport, RI? We could all stage a takeover of Collinwood! [vryevl]

[shckd] Drive to BROOKLYN?!!
You'd have to book me in the same room with John Karlen to get me to DRIVE to Brooklyn! ::)

[lghy] You are too too much, Rainey.
The best thing about this deal is that parking down there is much much cheaper than midtown or even down near Wall Street. I believe there are numerous food choices but for those of us who planned on doing back to back theater during the festival, it's a bit of a drag.:(

We've had this discussion before about clarifying your supposedly humorous remarks. However, smiley face following the remark or not, let's remember something.
The people who actually put on the festivals and produce DS merchandise are real people and not fictional characters like the ones who are fair game here to be discussed and dissected at length. It's important to be able to separate fictional characters from real people. Remarks such as yours reflect on real people with professional reputations to uphold. MPI, for example, is one of Jim Pierson's employers. This is no secret since he is listed as a producer on their DS and nonDS videos. MPI reads this board and occasionally posts here. Would you want your employer to read comments on a public board alluding that you might be a thief? I won't even go into the legal implications.
I raise money for charities too and would not find it in the least amusing that anyone publicly implied in my target market that I did not give money to the stated charities. You don't know who is reading your remarks here and you are unknown to them. I also have a particular kind of humor that I have to be careful how it might come across in print to people who don't know me. Most people here on the board have never met me or interacted with me in any way other than here. So, based on previous experience, I am careful to not allow for misinterpretation.
Someone made the mistake of thinking you looked like Bathia Mapes at a recent event, and I noticed your sense of humor was not in play there.;)

Nancy,
Apparently, you don't know me and see that I am just having a little bit of FUN with that comment.
I've known Jim Pierson for 12 years, and I know if he were, or is reading this message board, he would not find any humor in seeing his name posted in such a manner.
Let me list a few of the charities that have benefitted from donations from the Dark Shadows Festival: The Actors Fund, AmFar, WNYC,Saint John's Hospital and Health Center, American Cancer Society, National Trust for Historic Preservation, and the Los Angeles branch of the "Make A Wish" Foundation.

BTW, if you recall (you seem to have great recollection of my posts), I also said that Information on the Internet is not always valid.
-
Okay, let's stop this back and forth, please. I believe the point has been clarified that VAM intended for her comment to be a joke, yet I hope she can also see that the POV expressed by others was well-intentioned-- the point being that when we're making a joke that could reflect poorly on the reputation of someone else, particularly someone in the public eye, we should be mindful that our comments can be easily mistaken by some readers to be fact. So before making a joke, it's a good idea for all of us to first think about whether it can be misinterpreted by someone else. So rather than react emotionally, please think about this: libel does apply to what we say on the internet, and being reminded of this is a good thing.

Thanks for pointing that out, Bob. The festival has also donated money in memory of deceased actors who were active with the festivals. I imagine they will probably do the same with Dennis Patrick.
A good idea for anyone who wonders whether or not an organization has indeed followed through with giving to a charity, you can call that charity and ask. Allow at least six to eight weeks to go by after the event for the charity to receive the money and post it to their database. There is certainly nothing wrong with checking up and ensuring an organization is indeed giving the money they are claiming to be raising money for. In fact, it's a good idea.

The subject of VAM's comment has been settled, so anything else that needs to be said about it can be taken off the forum. Thanks!
-
Midnite, (how ARE you my dear?) LOL
I know you just asked that nothing else be said, but
could you just indulge me for a moment????
I just read all this stuff and I was like....OH MY GOD!!!
I don't believe it! When I saw the Jim Pierson fund comment I smiled. Ya know how I took it? That the poor guy NEEDS a fund for all the hard work he puts in. I swear, the other angle didn't occur to me - probably because I know nothing of the inner workings of the Fests and how the proceeds are used. I just knew that a lot of charities are the beneficiaries and for instance, the proceeds of David Selby's books go to organizations that help the homeless in southern California. (I WOULD know that, wouldn't I)...LOL
Anyway, after reading everyone's comments, then I COULD see how it might be taken another way. It's rather disquieting to realize all the different ways of interpreting posts. I start wondering...oh jeez, what have I posted in the past that could be taken badly, or in some way that never occurred to me! I'm a bit nervous about posting what I think, or letting myself get ridiculous for fear of starting some sort of mess.
The fear of offending, or really hurting someone really upsets me and I think I know how Vam is feeling.
Anyway, all I saw was that I posted something silly, and Vam responded with something silly and that was it, ya know? Oh - and by the way....am I losing my touch here, or what? I thought the scenerio with Roger Davis mud wrestling with Marie Wallace, and her creaming him, was rather amusing (poetic justice). Nobody liked it? LOL Ahem... 8)

Now THAT I'll talk about-- I thought your mud wrestling scenario was hysterical. So nope, you haven't lost your touch at all!

Anyone who knows me knows I'll be there come rain or shine(every year since I was 12). Besides, the last day is my birthday. What better way to celebrate than in NYC?
:-)

I'm ignoring the charity comments and such, and only want to say that I am planning to attend next year's Fest. It'll be my ten year anniversary since attending the 1993 Fest at the Marquis. Can't wait to finally meet some of y'all.

Wow! Thank you Bob, I am glad to hear Jim Pierson is doing such a grand job! and that our Dark Shadows festivals are helping so many charities... makes me feel very proud indeed! I have met Jim while volunteering, he is the busiest person there, I also see how much he enjoys what he does.
Jim has always been very polite to me.
Should you be reading this Jim.. keep up the great work!
I hope to volunteer for the 2004 festival. :)

For those city-hoppers that like to make trips around the city and see sites and visit restaurants, the Brooklyn location is going to be quite a hassle. Much too expensive to taxi back and forth and the subway ride is prohibitive in length...
I'm sure the other in-city venues were tried, but the prices were probably way too high. A shame as the Marriott in times square is perfectly located.
My one question and suggestion for the fest is- Why no con-suite? Almost every other convention I've been to has one- a two-room suite with complimentary drinks and pot luck food, that is specifically used for socializing with other fans and relaxing between scheduled events. There is a fan-meeting room, usually, but its fairly formal in design, almost always empty and devoid of munchies, couches and comfortable chairs...
Certainly would give people something to do during downtimes (especially those commuting just for the day) and might help some newbies make a few friends...
Just a thought.

LOL. I thought that was funny. I think it would be fun to talk to real fans.
I just check out the webpage of the hotel...Looks nice, I have seem better rooms however, I just recently stay at a five star hotel in Cincinnati (My first)...and belive me it was a great room for one bed.
But I am not to worry about the rooms!! Hello I never been to New York and Dark Shadows and my b-day is like a week later. HELLO Birthday Gift!!

BROOKLYN?! And, I was thinking of driving down this year, too! I'm with Rainey--I'd want special privileges to get me to go to Brooklyn.
With all the conveniences near Times Square, why choose a hotel out of the way of everything?

Not thrilled with the Brooklyn thing. I was truly hoping it would be a the Marquis. I like the idea of it being hosted in Newport. Of course that is just a dream. Just wondering if that has ever been looked into? It would be a wonderful place to have it.

I have only been to Newport once but I think it would be a beautiful location. I would love to take tours of some of the old mansions.
My husband and I stayed at a place called "The Admiral Ben Bow Inn". I would not recommend it but it was a beautiful place just non-existant service. The staff all left the guests alone and the next morning we had to make our own breakfast. There was absolutely no staff on the property.

As far as I know the Con Suite was for the actors and anyone speaking on a panel or for the volunteer party. I don't think it has ever been for just any fan to walk into.

Not thrilled with having to get there on Friday, my kid's birthday is the day before. Maybe I will sleep on the flight from Las Vegas so I can get some rest before the Festival. I will dream of Craig Slocum.

Glad to see that several of you are planning to attend. The SG update did mention that the hotel is located at the first Brooklyn stop after leaving Manhattan, so the ride shouldn't be TOO bad. I have very little knowledge of Brooklyn, except for the Brooklyn Academy of Music, so perhaps this will force me to do the research and learn to get around the borough.
Of course, the location won't keep me from seeing the sights of Manhattan. Here's hoping that "Dance of the Vampires" will still be playing (unless it already closed and I missed the news...). And of course, there's always "Chicago," which I highly recommend to anyone looking to see a first-rate Broadway show.
Looking forward to 2003!

John

Hi Carol. Choosing hotels for events also has to do with what price breaks a hotel is willing to give for blocks of rooms for a convention or large gathering. I have heard from various sources that the Marquis in Times Square will discount rooms but to the tune of over $200 a night which most fans could not afford. In fact, which most people without an expense account could not afford.

Hi Nancy! I understand about conventions needing blocks of space and I didn't mean to imply that it should be in Times Square per se. I just wondered if the powers that be checked other hotels within a wide circumference so that convenience to shopping, sightseeing, theaters wouldn't be a problem for those not familiar with NYC.
I have driven in NYC before and its not a city to get lost in--what with so many one way streets leading you away from where you want to go--that finding Brooklyn would be a major problem for me without someone riding shotgun with directions.
And I do know about finding the right hotel price. We've stayed in a variety using priceline.com or hotels.com. The best was the Essex House for $150 per room for the 3 of us over Thanksgiving weekend. We were treated like royalty. This year we weren't so lucky--we're paying $289 per room for the 3 of us.

$200????? That's a far cry from the good old days, when the Fest rate for rooms at the Marquis was only $99/night.
In any event, I think that I shall approach the new location with Victoria Winters-ish spunk, boldly marching into the unknown, meeting people who are strangers but will soon fill the days and nights of my tomorrows... :D

Yeah, that certainly is high. Of course the more convenient a location, the more it's going to cost. The entire Times Square area has undergone a major revamping over the past few years and that has led to higher prices for rents in the area. Hotels raised their prices (hotel tax alone is ridiculous). I know someone who had a small business function he wanted to have at the Marquis (and had there once before) and even the supposed discounts he was being offered were way higher than before and he simply could not do it.
Once you know which subway to take from Brooklyn into midtown it's really not a big deal. All that information can be obtained at the hotel. I imagine to that if like four people want to go into midtown, you can share the cost of a cab too.

I think it's the RR, Nancy. (But don't take my word for it). I lived on West 72nd and Central Park West (in the latter 70s - more commonly known as Dom's Grace Jones period, lol) and offered to house sit for a workmate in Brooklyn once. It was the longest train ride in mass transit history (not to mention the longest train). I'm almost certain that it crossed the river via the undercarriage of the Brooklyn Bridge (is that even possible?). The train had to travel about five miles an hour because of it's length and weight. It was a torturous ride - on a full train - in summer - with my infant son in tow. The best part of the trip was all the "old ladies" who gave me free advise on how to care for him. I mentioned he had a rash and I got five different cures from five different women. The best part was that every time one of them would off board, the rest would say she didn't know what she was talking about. The last lady remaining had suggested cornstarch, so I went with that, lol. Uh, where was I? Oh yeah, I think it's the RR. (But don't take my word for it.) ;D

Thanks Nancy, this is good advice!
I wasn't too crazy about going to Brooklyn at first because for me a 20 minute ride to N.Y. City has suddenly turned into an hour drive or so (with traffic) out to Brooklyn. So, I just might take your advice and hop on a subway instead of driving.
I'd really love to go since this would be my first time also and it would be great to get to meet everyone! ;-)

ROTFL!!! Dom, I wish I could have seen this! If anyones equipted to give good advice concerning children, it's definetely the "old ladies" who have a milestone of experience behind them.
This reminded me of Clark Gable (Brett Butler) in "Gone With The Wind" when he was taking his infant daughter out for a stroll and met up with a few old ladies who were just so happy to give him free advice on how to stop his infant daughter from sucking her thumb! ;-)

hey, at that time of year, i believe the 6 week saratoga meeting is going on. I have always heard that its a beautiful track with great racing, gonna go there sometime. I dont know what would be more fun, hitting a big trifecta or meeting this knucklehead bunch [heh]

Hi guys!! I have a computer again.
Thanks for the link, Castlebee. I just found a map. This place is very close to the city.
http://go.vicinity.com/marriottd/NavMap.d?E=biksG8XMMTr61Cr
It's also a block from a major subway station. Getting into the city will be a snap and not take too long. Joggers and walkers will probably want to follow the green line straight across the Brooklyn Bridge.
Now I just need to find out how close this place is to Junior's, and you can all go for cheesecake. :D
I was also expecting this to be at the Marriott Marquis, BUT...I will definitely be there.
Now, does anyone have Vlad's email addy to give me? My old address book is on the old computer, which went right out the door with my fiance a few months ago...

Hi Tripwire!! The Saratoga Race Course(oldest in the nation)is only a 30 minute drive from me. It's a beautiful track open from end of July to Labor Day. Go to www.nyra.com/Saratoga. If you have Quick Time, it'll give you a virtual tour.
Hollywood has been here filming scenes for the movie, "Seabiscuit", the last several weeks. I think Tobey Maguire is in it.

Welcome back, sheilamarch, and welcome to dsboards!
HTML doesn't work because the Forums use YaBB codes, which are listed in the Help section under posting.
I tried to fix your image code but I can't get the URL to work. There's a navigation map here:
http://www.marriott.com/epp/map.asp?MarshaCode=NYCBK
but I can't find the one you're trying to bring up, sorry.

Vlad's email address is hidden, but since yours isn't I'll send it to him. But you can reach any member by sending an IM. There's a tiny icon of a page with an envelope on top of it in everybody's posts, and clicking on it will open a message window with their username already filled in.

Yes, Midnite, I see I should have visited that room called "Testing 1 2 3" before I just leaped in...
It's good to be back, even if I am saddled with the title of "newbie". LOL

When you get off the Brooklyn Bridge coming from Brooklyn, where exactly are you? The idea of crossing the Brooklyn Bridge by walking or jogging kind of freaks me out.

Down by the South Street Seaport. You're below Little Italy and Chinatown.
