Let's start a list of scenes that were the most touching and heartbreaking in the series, too wherein the actors were RIGHT ON that day.. here are my nominees:
1. Sarah finally appearing to Barnabas as he strangles Julia (for the last time, amen.)
2. Chris J finally goes to see his little sister Amy at Wyndcliffe
3. B & J are tossed from 1970PT to 1995 and both lament the lack of love in their respective lives.
And. . more nominations??
1. Roger goes to David's room after Laura has burned to death in the fishing shack. Both Edmonds and Henesy were spot on and it was a moment of rare emotion between the two characters.

2. Joshua realizing what has happened to his son, and ultimately to his family.

3. This one may seem a bit strange, but what the heck. Jason is trying to get Willie out of town and Willie asks him plaintively, "What's gonna happen to me?" He realizes, although Jason does not, that he's lost all control over his life and his destiny. It's sort of oddly prophetic.

Also in the 1995 story, when Julia is beginning to feel possessed by Gerard, she tells Barnabas to go on without her. He refuses and tells her "Never without you." I thought some of the scenes between Julia and Barnabas during that story were the most poignant and best acted of the series.

Some other scenes I thought very poignant were when Quentin's ghost drives everyone out of the house. Louis Edmonds and Joan Bennett have a wonderful scene as they leave the house together and then the episode ends with the camera panning around the empty house.
Re strangling Julia, Grayson Hall should have gotten combat pay. In 1897, Magda is manhandled a great deal as well - Quentin is always grabbing her and I think she gets slapped pretty hard by Aristede.
1. Maggie and Joe--when they realize that it's over between them. To me, this is one of the most poignant scenes of the entire series. Talk about victims of circumstance. KLS and Joel Crothers were right on the money and made you really believe the characters still loved each other, and always would!

2. Carolyn and Jeb. For all his evil deeds, when he realized he wanted to remain a human more than anything else so he could be with Carolyn, you couldn't help wishing he could. And, the way he'd grab her head and hold her like he could never let her go....

3. From 1841PT, any scene where the Collins family treated Melanie like dirt. My heart used to ache for her. And Nancy Barrett conveyed that character's feelings of loneliness to perfection!
Great question, Julia99!
1) During the Leviathan sequence when Josette's ghost bids good-bye to Barnabas and he calls desperately to her as she fades away. At that point, it's finally over between them

2) Also during the time of the Leviathans, when Angelique sends Sky away, watching him go from the window of the Old House, and then runs to Barnabas for comfort. For the first time, the gesture didn't seem possessive or twisted; she was just relying on a friend for help.

3) In 1897, when Magda informs Quentin that he was the father of twins but that one is now dead. Everybody was amazing in that scene, but the expression on David Selby's face and his tone of voice were wrenching.
A subsequent scene between Quentin and Edward, when Quentin lambastes him for his Collins pride, dragging his dead son and Jamison into the mess, was also very powerful.

4) Another 1897 scene that always gets me: Crazy Jenny is in her basement cell tending to her 'babies' when she hears Quentin's music playing. Realizing that he's returned, she panics, snatches up the dolls and covers their ears as if by protecting them from the sound of the music, she can protect them from Quentin's menace too. There's something so pathetic and desperate about that scene, but in a weird way, it's also touching to see her maternal instincts kicking in. Jenny was my favorite Marie Wallace character.

5) From 1795, Barnabas learns that Josette has run off with Jeremiah, but declares that he still loves her anyway--much to Angelique's dismay.
:
1. The scene during Maggie's imprisonment in the Old House in which she is telling Barnabas about the little girl who comes to play with her. Barnabas looks at Maggie with great sadness, says, "Goodbye, Maggie..." and leaves her alone.

2. Barnabas stating that he "loathes" the person responsible for Maggie's death.

3. Angelique's death in 1840. For all of us who feel that Angelique is the ideal woman for Barnabas, this is a real heartbreaker.

4. The final scene in present-day Collinwood--the last time we ever see Barnabas, Julia, Liz, and the rest of the characters we've grown so fond of.

I'm trying to remember the exact time, I believe it was during the dream curse sequence or thereafter. Julia and Willie are in the Old House, and Willie is fretting over Maggie's safety (I think this may have been when they were going to use Maggie's life force for Adam's mate). Willie says something to the effect that it's hard watching someone you really care about endanger their lives, and made a comment that Julia couldn't really know what that felt like. She replied in a very low voice that she indeed did know what it felt like...

"You forget, Willie, I watched Barnabas..."

referring to the life force experiment that brought Adam to life.
One of Grayson Hall's best DS moments, IMO. I loved the dynamics between her and Karlen.

I'm amazed at people's memories here. They helped remind me of some other moments. (I'm surprised how 1995 came up in a couple of responses, considering that that entire sequence consists of only 10 episodes or so. I also found 1995 to be especially heart-wrenching and haunting; I replayed the sequence only a few days ago!)
Mrs. Johnson's concern for David in the dream curse events, when she does everything in her power to protect him but finally cannot help herself and tells him the dream.

Mrs. Johnson's bravery in helping Barnabas and Julia in 1995 by telling them what she knows -- and paying with her life.

Randall Drew's destruction of his sister, the vampire Roxanne. (Summer of 1970?)

Someone mentioned this already, but Joshua's decision to chain Barnabas in his coffin forever (1795); also, Barnabas' plea that his father kill him, if I remember correctly (1795).

Rachel Drummond's death in 1897; I think she reminisces about her childhood but I'm not certain, at any rate her dying thoughts were very moving.

Very hazy here, but there were some touching events relating to Quentin and Jamison in 1897.
Thanks for reminding me how much we have to look forward to!

How people remembered specifics of these events is beyond me!

Agreement here that
Sarah's goodbye is the saddest moment of the series. Joshua's discussion of events with Barnabas on the last night of 1795 together is also very touching touching.
I agree, Julian. I think those scenes worked so well because of the incredible amount of restraint and subtlety exercised by Frid and Hall.

That was chilling.

It's been nice recounting so many poignant moments in this thread. One moment that especially touched me is
the final scene in 1840 where Desmond bids farewell to time travelers Barnabas, Julia, and Prof. Stokes. That, to me, marked the closest thing to a farewell to the entire series. I'd almost rank it up there with Dorothy bidding goodbye to friends in Oz.
Reaching for some kleenex,
Ben

oh that was a good one! It is strange how such a 'silly' show causes us to suspend reality, yet reflect so well into the inner person. As a raving maniac hippietype at the time, I thought the whole deal about 'outcasts' and the underbelly of the show was about us [the freaks], and missed so much of the love story and personal stuff.

I would like to add one that sticks with me
where at the witchcraft trial, Big Ben is there to see Angie get hers. A poetic justice after all he went thru. He is one of the most sad, sypathetic and pathetic characters in the whole series to me, a real giver, a true friend. [wow, I'm choking up right now!] TD played that so well, as all his later folk, too.
THERE WERE SO MANY
1.Chris thinking he hurt Carolyn as the werewolf.

2.The Desmond scene where he is bidding bye to his friends was sad because when they return to the present and then must realize their friends are long dead!

3.When Beth tries to help Quentin!

4.When Magda finds Jenny and Quentin had children and she has cursed them!

5.When Barnabas is trying to find Julia in the locked room and finds her. also the "never without you" scene or any scene when they save each other

6.The scenes when Chris J or Quentin feel they are doomed.

7.The scene in which Quentin wonders how his great grandson Chris and Sabrina and Amy are doing while looking at a full moon

8.When Rachel Drummond dies with Tim Shaw
there are so many more!!

great question once again Julia99

Gerard,

I agree completely with your selection of
little Sarah's untimely death.
It was as sad as seeing that young boy shoot his beloved dog, Ol' Yeller, in the movie with the same title.

Or how about that ending scene in the film "The Deer Hunter," when Robert De Niro, Merryl Streep and John Cazale start singing "God Bless America" to mourn the loss of their friend, portrayed by Christopher Walken. I remember there wasn't a dry eye in the movie theater as the Vietnam-era audience viewed the flick's conclusion.
The scene after Angelique lifts the curse in 1840. She is with Barnabas alone. Angelique is concerned because now he is human (I forget the exact exchange of words). She expresses her love for him but he cannot.
Angelique asks that he hold her. Barnabas obliges.
Wow, everybody's got such great scenes! I agree with a lot, and here are some extra faves of mine. There's still a great deal of the show I haven't seen yet, but here's my votes:
The WHOLE September 10, 1897 episode. I can remember actually jumping up out of my chair and yelling at the TV. Oddly enough I was on the phone at the time so a friend of mine really got an earful.

-(1970) Daphne dying in Quentin's arms. I actually cried during this scene.

-(1897) The Jamison dreams about David's "final" birthday party sequence. Gave me chills the first time I saw it and is still probably one of my favorite moments in the series.

-(1970) Angelique's realization that Schyler Rumson is a leviathan.

-(1967) Barnabas recounting Josette's death for Vicki and Carolyn during the storm.

-(1967) (Another fave scene) At Barnabas' costume party, during the sceance, Josette comes through and at some point Barnabas jumps up and cries "It was the only way I could save her!" Or something to that effect.
I'm sure there's other scenes, because I can see them in my head but I forget the circumstances in them and such....

I hate to sound like Ebeneezer Scrooge or Count Petofi, but I really cheered when the exceedingly annoying McCauley Culkin was "stretched out" in that coffin after being stung by all of those killer bees in that schmaltzy movie. Jeez, is that child actor annoying!!! I like Alexander Todd more than that loathesome child.
When Maggie was at the hospital ready to die in bed. Sam and Joe were briefly by her side (so was Dave Woodard). The death tension was so thick in that scene you could actually cut it with a knife! Later Sam and Joe sat alone in the lobby and Sam began talking about how he had sat in that very chair the night Maggie was born and now he was waiting to find out whether or not she was gonna and he started crying right as he came to the word "die".
Positively the most poignant moments in the horror soap. Pity Scott, Ford, and Crothers didn't last till the ends of the series.
1.When Julia tells Barnabas to go back to 1970 without her he says "never without you!"

2. After Barnabas has staked Tom in his coffin, and he goes to Julia and sees she has recovered. Julia thanks him for what he did and Barnabas tells her she saved his life so many times she didn't need to thank him....next to the "never without you" scene this is in my opinion the best tender moment of friendship between Barnabas and Julia.

3. The ghost of Jenny appears to heal her and Quentin's very ill daughter....then she holds the baby and sings, makes me want to cry every time. But the way she sang and looked you could tell she had finally found the peace and contentment she never could when she was alive.

4.The farewell scene between Barnabas and Joshua....I know Joshua said he was incapable of love, but that anguished look he gave to Barnabas knowing it would be the last time he would ever see him alive proved just
how much he really did love his son. I always believed it wasn't because Joshua wasn't capable of loving anyone, he just wasn't capable of showing it that well or too often...
I still cry my eyes out at the end of Old Yeller, Bob. But then, at the end of "Titanic", when everyone was weeping, I thought the old bag was nuts for holding onto that jewel for so long and not cashing it in. Go figure.

OFF TOPIC:  I just wanted to share this. Funny because I understand perfectly why she threw it into the sea. Speaking of Titanic.  I was the last one to leave the theater and had to be helped out I was in such a state. I couldn't quit crying.  I was crying for the people who lost their lives and the fact that all of them didn't have to die, because they didn't want to clutter the deck. :( I also was crying for myself because I felt trapped like Rose. Again it was a time in my life when I was wanting to come out and I could identify with Rose because she thought there was no way to be who she wanted to be.  I came out just a few months after watching this movie and I think it gave me the courage too! Isn't it amazing the profound affect ART can have on our lives??

ON TOPIC:
1. When in 1995 Julia told Barnabas to leave her and he said "NEVER WITHOUT YOU".   I cry ever time because to me this is the first time I think Barnabas begans to admit (to himself) his feelings for Julia. He bascially said "I LOVE YOU" without the words.
2. When Julia is locked alone in the basement room in Parallel Time.  I felt so sorry for her and I wondered (when watching for this first time) if this was Julia's swan song.  So it made it all the more poignant.  I still get a bit misty eyed when watching.
3. After Barnabas and Julia escape the PT band and they both lament on never being able to experience a life of love.  The close up on Julia's eyes is heartbreaking.  I bawl.  Yes I am a very tender hearted man.  [ghost_sad]
4. When Quentin finds out about his children and his boy that died.  DAVID SELBY could have won a daytime Emmy for that if they were around then.  Seeing that hard drinking woman chasing man show some humanity was gut wrenching.
5. Magda realizing she cursed her own.
6. Seeing Barnabas, Julia, Liz, and Roger for the last time on DARK SHADOWS is truly sad for me.
7. Julia realzing she has lead the police to Barnabas to have him staked.  HEARTBREAKING. Grayson was amazing.
8. Mrs. Johnson in 1995. What a heartbreaking character and man did CLARICE deliver.  She makes me cry and she deserved an Emmy as well.
9. Julia showing up to save Barney from being staked in Parallel Time.  The scene between them is so sweet.
10. The scene where Willie basically tells Barnabas to admit he cares for Julia during 1968 when she is being tortured by Tom. It is indeed very poginant as Barney finally admits it.
I could go on and on.  I will stop for now.

As for the 1991 show:
1. Sarah's Death.  I thought Ben Cross was amazing and so was Veronica Lauren.
2. The scream/cry Barnabas made when he realized what he had done to Carolyn to reverse his aging process.  Very sad.:(
3. The scene in the jail between Countess Natalie and Victoria as she was telling Victoria they were taking Josette home too late.  Joanna and Barbara Steele were both superb.
4. Barnabas crying in the Old House when Angelique tricks Naomi into going there to see him
5.The aftermath with Naomi losing her sanity.
6. Daphne's staking after she reverts to human and whispers Joe's name!!
7. Joshua discovering Barnbas was "alive" and the hug between the two men.  Very poginant and I thought Stefan Giersach and Ben Cross were both amazing.
I am spent and may add more later!!

One of my big ones (sorry if I posted this here, eyes, can't scan through whole thread) is Nancy Barrett in 1995
pleading with Mrs. Johnson at the tree not to be dead.  Something like that I can have not seen for a year, but it gets me just thinking back on it.
The original biting of Barnabas in 1795.   I know for a fact that I've gone on at length about that one, somewhere, multiple times...  that's the pivotal DS moment, it's the whole story concentrated into one scene.   Despite the rubber bat, the acting saves it.  It's as if all his innocence is being violently ripped out of him, and it is absolutely not his fault.   I've seldom been so angry and outraged at a fictional character as I was along with Barnabas,
at Angelique, leading up to the gunshot.   That gunshot made it all visceral and real, too, when we're used to more fanciful supernatural attacks.   I may have come uncomfortably close to that feeling of absolutely needing to shoot someone dead.
With Joe after
seeing the transformation, it's just a series of emotional moments and scenes, especially the extended dream where he relives it all, then sees Tom and Chris attacking from both sides.
That is definitely one of my favorite scenes. I feel so bad for Joe; he was always such a nice guy and didn't deserve any of the crap he had to go through towards the end.

A few of my other picks: (I know most of them have been mentioned already, but they're worth repeating.)
- Sarah's ghost finally appearing to Barnabas and telling him that he "must be good." Even though he was basically trying to kill Julia just a few moments before, when I see that look on his face when Sarah leaves as he's begging her to come back... all I can think is, "Poor Barnabas, he needs a hug!" [hug] Also, many of Barn's other scenes when Sarah is mentioned (such as Vicki seeing her on the stairs) are particularly touching.
- Barnabas telling Victoria and Carolyn the story of Josette's death.
- Barnabas talking to Josette's portrait when the first time he's in the Old House.
- The scene with Barnabas and Julia in Josette's room after Barn has staked Tom. So sweet!
- The first post-vampire curse scene between Barnabas and Joshua and the last one. Joshua could be a jerk - downright cruel sometimes - but deep down I really think he was a big softie. [ghost_cheesy]
- The scene with Barnabas and Magda at Sandor's grave.
- Many of the early scenes with Adam, where he is first learning to talk and trying to communicate with Barnabas and Julia. And all the scenes where Willie is bullying him. I feel so bad for Adam and I just want to smack Willie in those. No wonder Adam turned out the way he did!
- Chris visiting Amy at Wyndcliff.
- I don't remember the exact scene, but there was one in 1840 between Gabriel and Daniel that I really liked. I think it may have been just before Daniel's death and they were talking about how he had never loved Garbriel because he wasn't "perfect" like Quentin, etc etc. What a jerk! It really made me feel bad for Gabriel. Like Adam, no wonder he turned out they way he did!
Okay, that's enough. I know there are plenty more though.

I don't like people who play favorites with their kids. You're right, Daniel was an absolute heel for treating Gabriel the way he did. However, any sympathy I had for Gabriel went out the window when
we found out he faked being a cripple all those years. Not only that, he also killed Randall Drew to frame Quentin.

Gabriel stated that he didn't think anyone loved him, not even Quentin, which I don't think is true. I think Quentin did care for him somewhat despite his obnoxious, self-pitying behavior. I think Gabriel just wanted to believe that Quentin didn't love him in order to justify doing what he did to him.
However rotten a father Daniel may have been to Gabriel, it doesn't justify Gabriel's horrible actions against Quentin.
