Title: Craig Slocum Mentioned In James Dean Biography
Post by: Craig_Slocum on October 10, 2002, 07:12:04 PM
Craig Slocum is mentioned in the James Dean Story, by Ronald Martinetti, a biography on actor James Dean's life. Already a legend in his lifetime, Dean became a cult hero in his death. Craig hung out with him when he was 18 years old and was part of his circle. It was a crowd he later cryptically, or maybe not so cryptically, described as "Jimmy's little girlfriends and boyfriends." He is mentioned as Rusty Slocum in the Debts and Acknowledgments section, and Index.

Slocum is quoted as saying, "He had a vital gift for bringing people into their own focus."

"When you were with Jimmy, he could make you feel like you were the one person in his life."

Craig was known to his friends as Rusty because of his red hair. People who have contacted me, who knew Craig personally, said when they knew him, it was always as Rusty. That's a good nickname for him!

The things you mentioned that are in the book (here are the excerpts) were about Dean's life during 1953:

"He had a vital gift for bringing people into their own focus," said Rusty Slocum.  "When you were with Jimmy, he could make you feel like you were the one person in his life."

Slocum was an eighteen-year-old would-be actor who hung around with Dean and was part of his circle.  It was a crowd he later cryptically, or maybe not so cryptically, described as "Jimmy's little girlfriends and boyfriends."

DS' Craig Slocum was born in November, 1940, which would've made him 12 or 13 in 1953.  James Dean died in September, 1955, when Craig Slocum was 14.  So I'm sorry to disappoint, but he can't be the person the author was writing about.

I just spoke to Jim Pierson, at DCP, he said somebody had the wrong information about the year he was born. So yes it is him, the year of birth is wrong. Things like that happen, it wouldn't be the first time, I'm sure.

It has been verified that Craig Slocum's date of birth is November 14, 1934. The year of his birth was posted as 1940, which was wrong. It has been corrected on my Cheryl's Craig Slocum Website, http://members.tripod.com/~MrJuggins/cheryl/slocum.htm

See my tribute on Page One, and also his memorial page, click on the link. I am also working on getting it corrected in the IMDb. That will take a few weeks probably. Sorry for this, but it was not my fault, was given the wrong year.

Thanks for the links Cheryl.  The book sounds pretty interesting and I like to read it sometime.

The nickname "Rusty" definetely suits Craig! I wonder if his fellow DS cast members ever called him this too?

Hi Cheryl,

It certainly isn't the first time. I know of one Dark Shadows actress who was actually born four years earlier than her listed birthday in the Dark Shadows Almanac. No names though ;)  Bob

I believe Jim Pierson is the person,  who does the editing of all the DS ALMANACS for KLS.

I've never heard of anyone long dead being "thanked" in a book's acknowlegements. Also, reading the website link midnite provided, one would get the impression that they were quoting a still-living person.

I doubt if they did. They only knew him as Craig from what I know. It took someone like me to find out these things.

Craig Slocum was still living in 1975. That's when the book was published. He died in 1978. It's him.

I misunderstood.  I thought this was a just-published book.

No problem. I have been very lucky to hear from people who knew Craig personally. It is fun! I will share what I can, am getting together a biography. I am very happy that my website for Craig has touched other peoples lives, and brought back memories for those who knew him. I am glad I took on this task, for a "wonderful person".

I got interested in him a few years ago when I saw him on Dark Shadows reruns. It happened suddenly. I was totally captivated. I like everything about him. I get enjoyment out of his performance. Craig looked pretty sharp as Harry Johnson, and was the only thing that made the whole Adam storyline bearable.

He is interesting and fun to watch, and just seems so sweet and nice, has a nice sounding voice too, carries his tall, lean body so well, and don't forget his red hair, and cute baby face! I will always love him.

I've come to think that Craig should have been cast as David's older half-brother. The subplots and scenarios could have been delicious! Not to mention endless.

Just wanted to mention, the other day, I bought a really cool art work framed portrait of James Dean, Marilyn Monroe, and Elvis Presley. Of all places, I found it at the supermarket! I hung it up in my living room, with my other movie star photos. Looks cool!
