    Moxie is a soft drink created by Dr. Augustin Thompson of Union, ME in 1884.  It was used to cure such ills as "loss of manhood" and " paralysis and softening of the brain".  
    The first time my husband and I tried it we were unaware of its effects.  We spent a sleepless night whirlling like tops in our bed.  Everytime I see Joe Haskell now I think of my first can(and last) of Moxie.

I partake in another discussion board and a New England friend there sings the praises of Moxie. If I ever get to that part of the nation, I will have to try it. Earlier in the day!

I live in the NE and my mother use to let me drink it when I was a kid!  I haven't drank it since.  Extremely bitter.  Sort of like a mixture between tar and Guiness Stout without the alcohol.  The elderly love it.

My husband is from Massachusetts and he remembers drinking it as a child. He said it made him sick. He also said alot of old timers used it as a physic

I've tired it! did nothing for me!a lot of stores don't sell it here mainly because it tastes gross and people don't buy it. my sister (from Delaware)and i searched a few stores one day because one her friends wanted it!
don't think it has laxative effects but the elderly will try anything for that!

never heard of or tried moxie, but always thought i would like to have tried absinthe.

I've seen that word 'absinthe' many times in books over the past and I was curious as to it's meaning.  The Webster's defines it as 'a liqueur flavored esp. with wormwood and anise'.

Absinthe was a bitter anise-flavored green liqueur made from wormwood, other herbs and alcohol....LOT'S of alcohol.

It was popular in artistic, bohemian circles in the 19th century.

Being both addictive AND toxic it is generally illegal to produce.

    Isn't absinthe the ingredient for a New Orleans drink called Sazerac?

Back to Moxie. It is still sold in stores in my area.  I think I remember trying it as a child and yes it tasted gross.  Now I am curious and wonder if I would still feel the same.  Didn't knowabout all the other "efffects" of the drink.
