Hey All,
I'd like to do a piece over at Blog of Dark Shadows on fan thoughts regarding casting of the new Dark Shadows movie. If anyone's interested, please respond with who you would like to see cast in which role and why.
Thanks much!

Cate Blanchett as Dr. Julia Hoffman: authoritative & sexy.
Joseph Gordon Levitt as Willie, a terrific young actor, now the right age & type to be the gruff Willie, & because he was on the 91 DS.
David Selby as Roger,
Kate Jackson as Liz
John Karlen as Prof Stokes
the three DS actors who became the biggest names post-DS, all are the right age for these characters, and a connection to the original show is needed.
Jennifer Love Hewitt as Victoria Winters, well look at her!
Beyonce or Halle Berry as Angelique, because this character should look like she actually comes from Martinique--should be played with Island accent!
Jonathan Frid as old man on train--(rewritten from the old lady on train in episode #1 from 1966)
needs no explanation!

I have no idea at this point. I will have to think on it. I for one don't like Beyonce's acting style but that is me. I would prefer Halle Berry. I really would like to see Helena Carter out of this one. It's getting redundant in my opinion. I will write more later...

Helena Bonham Carter has already said she's sitting Depp Shadows out because of the new baby she & Burton just had, though I think she's a terrific actor.
I LOVE her early work in James Ivory's films.
-
It's not that I don't think she is a good actress I am just tired of her being in everything Johnny and Tim do. That is all! :) Cate Blanchett as Julia is a wonderful pic in my book!

I love the idea of Joseph Gordon-Levitt being in the film, both because he was in the primetime series and because he's become a fantastic actor. I really want to see Joseph and Johnny work together, and this film is a no-brainer. I hadn't thought of a specific role, much less Willie, but now that I think about it, it sounds perfect- it is a great role!
I also love the idea of a woman of color portraying Angelique. It makes much more sense. However, I've never been a fan of Halle Berry and am not sure about Beyonce. Thinking back to Johnny's former co-stars (he often works with the same people again), Naomie Harris (Tia Dalma/Calypso in Pirates 2 and 3) seems perfect, to me.

Kelsey Grammer as Roger

-
Tony Peaterson / Rev Trask -Joaquin Phoenix
I love this idea he is such a good actor and could really do alot with either roll
-
Helen Mirren, Jacqueline Bisset or Barbara Parkins as Elizabeth
Tuc Watkins from Desperate Housewives as Burke Devlin
-
I want Jane Fonda as Liz!
-
Kathy Bates as Abigail Collins:
can you
imagine Bates chewing this line up & spitting it out:
"Victoria Winters is the witch! She's the one! Hurry brother, call the Rev Trask before she turns us all into goats!"(from the 91 series)
-
I want Jane Fonda as Liz!
Jane Fonda is nearly 75. She looks great but might be too old to play the 50ish Liz.
Thoughts?

This is something that I've thought about a lot, actually, and I've posted my ideas other places, but there are a few members of my dream cast that I'm really attached to:
Victoria: Zooey Deschanel - though, I have to say, I've recently fallen in love with the idea of Carey Mulligan in the role. And as much as I love Anne Hathaway, I don't want her to get the role, because I think she's the obvious choice. I'm not sure she'd take it, though, for similar reasons as why she didn't take the role of Alice in Burton's Alice in Wonderland.
Roger: John Simm. I haven't seen him in very much - only as the Master in the new Doctor Who series, but I think he's a fantastic actor and could definitely pull it off.
Quentin (if he's even there): Andrew Garfield. This one's more based on looks than anything else, but I think he's another excellent actor. Besides, he was in The Social Network, as was David Selby, so there might be a ~connection there ;D. Yeah, yeah, I'm grasping.
As for others... Looks-wise, I like the idea of Amanda Seyfried as Angelique, though I'm not sure she could pull it off acting-wise. Also, if Helena Bonham Carter's going to be there anywhere, I think she'd make an excellent Laura.

And welcome to you, zombie Josette! Love the avatar. [santa_smiley]

I wish the producers would find a young actor, classically trained as opposed to method-trained, who has theater experience doing Shakespeare and the classics to be Barnabas. Such a background would give the young actor the same gravitas and deep range that Jonathan Frid brought to the role. Frid thrived on the contradictions in Barnabas; if depth wasn't in the writing, he brought it with him.
The last thing I want to see is an shallow egocentric pretty boy in another of Tim Burton's fetish films.
Sorry.

Personally I would never call Johnny Depp shallow and egocentric but that is just me. I respectfully disagree that he is either of those things. Johnny Depp is one of the best actors we have right now. His body of work speaks for itself. He is so anti Hollywood so the statements that you made just sort of baffles me. Plus, Johnny is good looking but I would hardly call him a "pretty boy" maybe when he was young but not now. He has a harder more worn look that I thik is perfect for Barnabas! Again I am not trying to be hateful as you have every right now your opinion but I think it's time we are realized DS needs a fresh approach and it to me atleast it doesn't need another Shakespearn trained actor to play Barnabas just because it worked for Jonathan Frid. That is just my opinion. Again no disrespect! [santa_wink]

On a somewhat shallow note, I'm not sure I would like to see a "young" actor as Barnabas and am glad that Johnny Depp is in his 40s. Not trying to start an argument about how old Barnabas was supposed to be--since no age was actually stated outright for him, I'm sure most of us have our own mindset on that topic anyway--but I think the character of Barnabas works better with an older, slightly worn looking actor in the role. I will miss that lovely, classically trained voice and range that Frid brought to the role, but I think that might be hard to duplicate anyway. Frankly, Barnabas could get away with saying the most absurd things, in my opinion, just because he said them with that voice. LOL! [santa_wink]
As to what Depp will or will not bring to the role, I'm reserving judgment on that because, dinosaur that I am, I have seen only two or three of his films. Not enough, I feel, to really form an opinion one way or another on his talent as an actor.
-
As far as Depp's talent as an actor goes, one thing to keep in mind is that he already has three Oscar nominations to his credit. And they don't hand those out to just anyone. [santa_smiley]

Yes they do.
I didn't mind Depp in The Ninth Gate, but he gives the same performance in film after film, always playing it cute (I said PLAYING it cute, not looking cute). I'm just not a Depp fan, I guess.
I would rather see Ioan Gruffudd put the life back into Barnabas on the basis of his Horatio Hornblower in nine British cable films. He also played Reed Richards in Fantastic Four, Prime Minister Tony Blair in W., and the legendary William Wilberforce in Amazing Grace, among other things. An actor's actor.
But it's a done deal, unfortunately, so this is just wishful thinking on my part.
I note that Kirsten Van Wagner has been cast as Victoria Winters.

It's discussed on what's currently the last few pages of the topic "It's official: Dark Shadows returns as a film with Johnny Depp" on the Current Talk board.
