Title: DS DVD Set 2
Post by: Raholt on August 28, 2002, 03:47:38 AM
Has anyone who pre-ordered the DS DVD set, especially from Amazon, gotten any notice that their order has been shipped.  I ordered mine back in May, just as the first set was coming out and I realized today was the release date but I had no word from Amazon.  I checked their website and it says it usually ships in 2 to 3 days, which either means they didn't get their order as promised by MPI or they have shipped all they had and are having to reorder.  I'm just wondering if anyone has gotten it period, from anywhere yet, including MPI?

Nope.  I pre-ordered from Amazon also and have been watching for some notice that they have sent it, but nothing so far.  [pissd]

I thought that the MPI website indicated that those who ordered from them would get their DVDs a little earlier than the rest of us. Has that happened? I assume not since no one has mentioned receiving anything.  :'(

While Amazon and Barnes and Noble list Vol 2 of the DVD's as being in stock and shipped in 2 -3 days, I went to Buy.com which usually gives a more truthful listing of what status a product has and they have it listed as being released on Aug 27, but status is backordered.  That tells me it was not release today as MPI has been promising for over a month now it would be.

BTW, I checked MPI's website and they are still advertising it coming on Aug 27.  When the first set was released, the day of the release that type of ad was changed to say Available Now!  It has not changed this time so that tells me it is not available as promised and that is why nobody has gotten any notification about their order or recieved the product.  So much for MPI claiming some pre-orders might ship by Aug 14.  If that did happen and I doubt it, then they must have diverted all their available stock to those orders leaving others who ordered elsewhere online or in store hanging.

i learned a long time ago to never pre-order anything. i always wait till i know for a fact that it actually exists first. this seems to be especially true for ds related items.

I tried 7 stores and none had it,...I finally called MPI and just ordered it from them...They said it was a little late getting out and thats why the stores may not have had it but a friend of mine saw it in another town not too far so it is out...give it a couple of days...I was really frustrated with the local stores but, as always MPI is very accessible by phone when all else failed...

I availed myself of the free shipping from Amazon.Com for the DSII DVD so I went to the site on Aug. 27th and changed my pre-order status to 'placing the order'.  I received a return email from A.C. saying that it would be shipping on  Sept. 9th.

Maybe the delay from A.C. is to ship first to those who are paying for shipping and lastly to us who are getting the 'freebee' shipping.

This a.m. I received another email from A.C. advising me that the DVD has been released. ?!?

I checked my preorder last night, because I had the shipping to go to my "old" job. So, I was relieved it hadn't been sent. It said that I was slated for shipping on Sept. 5-10. Which is in keeping with Miss Winthrop's info at least. I will keep my preorder status and lets see if I get it at same time as those who just ordered it.

Interesting note, I am a huge Costco addict. I had a certificate for $20 on their web site and used it for a movie that I didn't realize wasn't yet released at the time. Another time I pre-purchased in the store itself. One I got a day early or the day it was released, the other I got SEVERAL days early. Of course, they don't handle a huge selection and I have not seen the DS collection there. (They do have Buffy season II in the stores, not sure about the web site.) Anyway, just thought I would mention how they compare. Perhaps that isn't fair to Amazon though, if the actual problem is with MPI.

I order lots of my DVDs from Canadian DVD e-tailers, since you can get them for much, much cheaper.  The only downside is that shipping takes longer, and sometimes the initial release dates vary.

I got Set 2 for only $39 US dollars, with free shipping, but I won't see it until the middle of September...  Haven't decided whether I'll do the same for Set 3...

CDT, where did you order the set???  I'd be interested since I've seen those eps and am in no particular hurry.  (And you're right... shipping from Canada usually takes a good bit longer than within the States.)

I checked the big retail chain B*** B** in my area today (not spelling it out since I know one or two people here aren't too happy with them) since they usually have decent prices... but, no luck... not in stock yet.  Media Play usually carries DS DVDs, but I didn't go look there since their prices are generally a good deal higher.  I had a pretty good experience with dvdplanet.com for collection 1, but if you got yours at such a good price from Canada, I may have to go that route!

             Joe

p.s. Anyone else notice that Amazon raised the price for Collection 1 to over $50??  Wonder why...

I went thru www.dvdsoon.com --but it's my first order thru them, so I can't give you a personal recommendation yet...   And the free shipping is only if you get several things--I don't remember the price cutoff, but it's listed...

They've got a mixed reputation so far, from what I can tell.  I usually start by checking out www.dvdpricesearch.com , which you may already be familiar with...

Having worked in retail video, if the shipping dates have been pushed back like that, it is not from Amazon or MPI shipping to pre-orders first, it is that MPI has delayed the release date of the set.  Amazon's shipping estimate change all the time, but this now tells me, along with no reply from Amazon customer service about the status of my order, that they don't know now when the set is coming out.  Add to that the before mentioned comment  by MPI that it was a little late getting out and what I see now is that it is not out anywhere.  For the person who had a friend that saw it somewhere, they must have seen set 1 and thought it was the new set because the evidence is overwhelming that it has not been released yet.

Now lets see how far the release date of Set 3 is pushed back after this.  I'm thinking October or even November.

I searched several stores yesterday for the Dan Curtis Macabre Collection (or any individual titles in that collection) to no avail.  This was suppoed to be released yesterday as well.  I ordered from Deep Discount DVD last evening--hoping for a delivery by Saturday--but I'm afraid MPI has failed in delivering as planned and I'll get it sometime next week--if not later--and my Credit Card will still be charged.  Ah well, so much for being anxious about these things!  After 45 years one would think I could be more patient and wait until I actually see my wish list DVDs in stores.   :-/

But that means MPI is STILL releasing them late.  What's the problem?  BestBuy nearly always has DVDs a week early. . .(not that I'm crazy about BestBuy due to my past problems.)   :' (Sigh. . . I'm too busy at work and thus to tired to care.)

Okay, I just visited MPI's website and the ad has now changed to say DS DVD Set 2 Available Now so that means that most likely they are beginning to ship to their customers and to stores and online dealers so maybe by Friday people will begin to have them in stock both in stores and online and they will be sending them out.

The 2nd DVD Collection began shipping in the middle of last week to both customer pre-orders & retail stores.  It should begin appearing in stores at the end of this week or early next week depending on the retailer.

Given the message above, it sounds to me like I and the other person who posted to my original message saying they to had ordered theirs from Amazon.com, need to be finding out why it has already showed up on the shelf of Media Play, but not there, Barnes and Noble or Buy.com.  Usually if you order (pre-order) from Amazon, you get it sent to you as soon as it comes out and since I pre-ordered back in May, I should have been near the top of the list of pre-orders.

I wrote Amazon this week asking for an explanation and they could give me none, but my thinking is that something is not right here and either Amazon fouled up their pre-orders in this case or fouled up in theiir order to MPI, not getting nearly enough to cover the demand.

However, I do ask anyone who has already recieved their Set 2 or  does get DVD Set 2 sent to them in the next week or so  to please post and let us know you have it and where you got it from,  so that then those of us still waiting with have the ammo needed to really put the questions to Amazon and other online retailers that should also being sending them out.  Frankly, I am disappointed as I had hoped to have it to enjoy during my time off for Labor Day.

Let me add to what I said earlier...when I called MPI Tuesday they told me it had JUST been sent to retailers...I am not sure how Media Play got it so quick but all the stores should be getting it early in the week if they dont have it already...I'll post when I get mine from MPI...

Well, having worked in a retail video store, I know that if the DVD set had been shipped out on Tuesday or even as late as Thursday, most likely it would have reached the warehouse by Friday.  If it was indeed Tuesday, then it would have reached the warehouse by Wednesday or Thursday and been on shelves by Friday.  My concern is that Amazon, unlike a store, fills their orders from a warehouse, thus cutting out the time it would take to ship from warehouse to store and apparently nobody who ordered from them have gotten any notice of shipment despite their website saying it would usually ship in 2 - 3 days.  That was up on Tuesday so by Friday would have been 3 days and still no word.

I did notice something odd when the product is listed under my order.  It has something about being directed by Newberry something that made no sense.  I'm wondering if there is now a technical glitch.

One more item of interest, I was just on Amazon's website and like I figured, the other day, the date for Set 3 has indeed been pushed back to an October 29th release.

Checking Barnes and Noble's website, they now have set 2 listed as in stock and shipping in 24 hours.  Okay now Amazon is getting me upset.  I have ordered from them many times without incident, having even gotten things earlier than I could elsewhere on occasion but this time it appears while they know the new status of Set 3, they don't have set 2.  Something is up here and I guess I will have to write them again to find out.

I have to say Amazon has really been going down hill...which is why I paid the extra $ to get it from MPI...Amazon is increasingly difficult to get on the phone and they shipped the wrong cd to a friend of mine FIVE times! When a mistake happened once with an MPI tape they made it right immediately

I received my Curtuis Collection from Deep Discount DVD today.  Packaging is like the DS collection.  The video (when compared to the MPI videotape releases) is excellent.  Unfortunately, the audio has some problems:  DORIAN GRAY and TURN OF SCREW has an audio transfer that forces all sound to the back speakers when one plays the disc with Dolby ProLogic turned on.  I had to switch my audio to Stereo to get the sound in front of me.  (This is a minor complaint, but I had to say it.)

For what it's worth, I order a lot of DVDs from www.dvdplanet.com  They have great discounts (30% on pre-orders) and they ship things very quickly.  If an item is in stock, I tend to receive it in less than a week from the day I ordered it.  Also, their website lists the inventory status of every item, which is a great thing, indeed.

Well, Amazon customer service finally got back to me with an explanation.  It seems they found Set 2 in short supply, meaning their people didn't order enough from the supplier and by the time they realized it their supplier was out.  They are trying to get it from a different suppler and hope to have it to me by Sept 9.  Been around retail video long enough to know that someone fouled up and thought it would not sell so didn't order but one or two, even with pre-orders already taken.  The company I worked for could do the same thing and I never understood how you could be in that business and not know what you are doing.  Apparently it is pretty easy.

No offense Carol, but reading your post outraged me.  It was not your post itself or you, but the fact that your ordered the DVD set on Friday and Amazaon is now shipping it to you and I pre-ordered it in late May and I'm still awaiting along with another board member who also pre-ordered it.  My outrage is at Amazon.   Have they lost their minds?  Do they not know how to conduct business anymore?  Last time, I checked a if person pre-orders a product  they are suppose to be among the first, not the last, to recieve the merchandise.  I was told the short supply story but if it was in a warehouse in Delaware, it is true my orders usually come from Kentucky, but they could have easily shipped it to the Kentucky warehouse and on to me or shipped it directly to me.  As it is, they said hopefully I would have it by next Monday, the 9th, but that was when they were talking like they didn't have any to ship before that time.  I ordered and recieved a  CD from Amazon in England faster than I am getting this DVD set, and with none of the run around.  That whole process took a whopping 10 days and it has almost been that long since the DVD set came out and I'm still waiting to hear it has even been shipped, little on actually have it in my hands.

It seems to me that someone at Amazon needs a refresher course on customer service and what the terms pre-order and satisfaction mean as well.  If you have an item in stock that item should go to the first person who ordered it, not the last.  No offense Carol, I'm happy that you got such prompt service, but it isn't fair that someone put an order in on Friday and get a notice of shipment the following Tuesday, while someone who ordered it in May is still waiting.

I can understand your anger, Raholt, but after reading all the delivery problems with the DSDVD#1, I decided to wait. When I noticed that some posters were getting DSDVD#2 through video sites other than MPI or Amazon, I decided to try my luck and place an order with Amazon since I do alot of business with them.

Since I am in no hurry to receive it, I was informed that delivery date would be anywhere from 9/13-20. That was okay by me.  Then I got an email notice telling me that it would shipped 9/2. I checked the tracking site and it supposedly left Delaware today at 7:30am via UPS.

Naturally, I would think preorders would get first crack before late orders but sometimes the real world doesn't work the way it should.

I hope you receive your DVD soon.

Does not necessarily happen that way. The customer goes on a backorder list and there is no rank order sometimes to that list. It depends on the sophistication of the distributor's database.

Thank you Carol.  I have written another letter to Amazon.com on this matter.  Like you I have done a good deal of business with them as well and if they want to keep me as a customer, then they had better get on the ball and right this problem.

Vam, I worked in a tiny video retail store in a mall for 2 years and here is how sophisticated our pre-order list was.  It was a piece of paper on a clip board, but it worked and we made sure it was first come first served.  Surely a place as large as Amazon, with all their computers and alike can manage to keep a list based on date of order and do the same thing with even more ease than we did...at least you would think.

I'm sorry everyone, I know that this is not the only source of my frustration and anger right now, but this past week at the library where I work now, our director is retiring and we have just had an interim director rammed down our throats that nobody wants and is not qualified for the position.  What makes it worse is he was chosen over the current director, who has 17 years of outstanding service and had agreed to stay on until a permanent replacement could be found.  This done so by a politically corrupt board of directors that this interim director was president of until a few days before he was given the job.  In this case the wishes of the staff, the general public and even the county commission were all ignored , despite the fact that the board is there to look out for the public's interest, but they chose to betray that trust and look out for their own personal interests and that of the interim director.  I hate injustice and this situation has made me get into a fighting mode to protect my rights.  My rights as a citizen to have a say in the library that I pay for with my tax dollars and seems to now be thought of as the personal property of  a group 6 people and my rights as a customer to get what I ordered in a timely and fair manner.  Neither of these situations have turned out to be handled very fairly and right now I'm just tired of constantly getting the shaft every way I turn.

Carol,

I am  not mad.  I am happy for you.  At least, Amazon can't say they don't or didn't have any in stock.  You getting your order from them proved that they did.  I wrote Amazon about this, my third letter to them on the subject of my pre-order since Aug 28.  This time, stating the facts as they happened for you, unlike the other times, when I heard back from them in 24hrs, this time they are strangely silent.  I guess they cannot explain this situation any better than I can.

Well Carol, I hope you enjoy your new DVD's and  I mean that sincerely.  Also thank you for bringing this subject up and keeping me posted on its arrival.  This will strongly affect my next pre-order, which is DVD 3, which I made in July and any future orders I might have placed with Amazon.com.  Again thanks and enjoy.

Got mine today from Amazon. It's BUZZ TIME! Woohoo! So far I've watched the Moltke interview and part of the 1st disc. So far, so good.

Well, today, Amazon finally sent me word that my DS DVD Set 2 has shipped.  I should get it on Monday, one day shy of 3 weeks after its release date and 3 months and 3 weeks since it was pre-ordered.  Better late than never, I suppose, but this incident has given me serious doubts about using Amazon for any future orders of any kind.

I cancelled my order with Amazon on 9/6am-ordered from WWW.CDUNIVERSE.COM 9/6, it shipped 9/9 from Ct. and received it 9/11. My total cost was $46.98.  I believe I saved roughly $1.00 as opposed to ordering through Amazon.

It's amazing how a big outfit like Amazon can't get it together.  They obviously knew from DS I that they had a popular item but I suppose it's like trying to turn the Queen Mary and adjust to a changing tide.

I cancelled my Amazon order on 9/5 and ordered from CDUniverse that night. They shipped on 9/6 and I received it on 9/9. That is great service and they will have all my DVD/VHS/CD orders from now on.  :)

Still waiting on mine from www.dvdsoon.com -- Says on order, expected around 9/17...  I knew this might happen with a Canadian e-tailer, but darn...  :(

They do this with Canadian release dates all the time -- if supply is short, they re-route everything to the states, and push the release back the date by several weeks.  Sigh.  They just did this with the Outer Limits, too...  Guess that's what I get for only paying $39.  Great bargain, but much patience required.  Oh well.  I hadn't really finished Set #1 anyway -- not with Quentin showing up on SciFi...

(By the way -- I'm livid with SciFi channel for cancelling Farscape, their #1 show for the past 3 years...  Evidently they've changed their minds about having any original series at all -- it's cheaper to just buy repeats.  I'd skip the channel completely except for DS...)
