Title: Reviewing DS
Post by: Tanis on August 23, 2002, 06:11:20 PM
It's a given that we are intensely dissecting DS at the time of its first appearance on television.  With what they knew and what they had to work with in the late sixties and early seventies, and also the short amount of time they had for learning lines, budget problems etc, they probably did a pretty good job.

Now, if DS were running now, in this day and age, with the original cast, that I realize many are gone now, but if they were available at the age they were at the sixties presentation.  With the same writers, and basically the same script, however since people think differently about many topics now, what would DS look like if it were in the first run now, 2002.?

Even though we sometimes have fun at the bloopers on DS, for the technical limitations of the time it was very well done.  Perhaps they were a bit over ambitious at times and didn't have the technology to meet the scripts demands.  Today, I'm sure it would have a much more polished look - but I wouldn't have the show any other way than the way it is now.

I agree that you can't improve on the original show.

Just curious to see what kind of response the question would get.

With the technology today it would be a lot more polished than originally done.  I think the bloopers add some character to the show that may otherwise take away some of the charm of the show in the beginning.

That's probably exactly right. Take a look at "Passions." That's what DS would look like today. The special effects might be better, but the acting would not. And unfortunately, about 85% of the DS cast would be replaced with young, nubile young actors and actresses showing as much skin as possible. I shudder to think what would become of my beloved DS in today's youth-oriented climate in soaps.

;DDoc Lang's correct.  Can't even imagine who they would cast for Liz or Julia, the more mature types.  Are there any of them left on the soaps?
Guess that's why I watch "old" soaps on Soapnet.   Afan

I'm sure there would be more blood, gore, more explicit love scenes, and it wouldn't be on in the afternoon.

i was lured to it cause i had heard about a vampire on the show, and as  i watched, i roared at the bloopers, and then got to following the plot line, and i was officially hooked. and as i read about the primitive production facilities, they did a very good job....most of the time. i find the storylines, along with outrageous bloopers, too hard to resist..i am one who is critical of the show, loving to point out bloopers and such, but i wouldnt change one thing about it.
