Title: Who's More Annoying: Jeff Clark Or The Dell Computer Kid?
Post by: Bob_the_Bartender on August 20, 2002, 04:20:00 PM: Dear Fellow Dark Shadows Fans,

(Here's a poll that I think I already know what the final outcome will be.) Do you find Jeff Clark, with his seemingly perpetually angst-ridden, hair-grasping, and petulant "schtick" more annoying? Or, like yours truly, are you absolutely sick and tired of seeing that geeky twenty-something with the seemingly unending leering smile on his kisser in those ubiquitous Dell Computer TV commercials? (I tell you, I almost threw my cherished autographed Tom Seaver baseball at that blonde-haired nerd the other night!)

Incidentally, in defense of Jeff Clark's hair-grasping, I believe that Jeff is merely emulating the late, great Rod Steiger. If you've ever seen the gritty film classic "On The Waterfront," (and I just know that you all have!), Mr. Steiger is seen to grab both his face and the hair on the sides of his head in that famous cab scene with Marlon Brando (or "Mr. Mumbles" as Frank Sinatra once described him).

Perhaps you've seen that other 1950's film, in which Mr. Steiger plays a condemned prisoner who crash lands with several other airline passengers in the Amazon jungle. (I can't quite remember the flick's name, but it's on AMC quite often.) Anyway, Mr. Steiger (who has the only gun) has to decide which passengers can take off in the damaged airliner to safety, and which passengers will stay behind with him to face certain, horrible death at the hands of the native head-hunters.

Well, it is a real tour de force for Mr. Steiger as he wrestles with the awful question of just who should live and who should be left to die. I believe that Mr. Steiger takes a full minute, grasping his face and the hair on the top of his head (with no hat on this time!) before he arrives at his momentous decision. I have believe that Roger Davis (Jeff Clark/Peter Bradford) had to be influenced by this brilliant dramatic actor.

By the way, I also believe that Mr. Steiger influenced another young and upcoming actor, John Travolta with his hair/head grasping routine as Vinnie Barbarino in "Welcome Back, Kotter." Surely you remember the great line, "I'm so confused!" by the greatest member of "The Sweathogs"?

So, while I'm sure that most of you will opt to give thumbs-down to Jeff Clark, I'll give the "Sicilian Salute" to that creepy Dell computer kid.

He got into a bit of trouble with the union recently over filming commercials during a strike. (So did Tiger Woods, btw. I'm sure that fine will be a crushing blow to his yearly income. ::))

I was much happier when the only actor of note from town was the guy who played Mr. Belding on Saved by the Bell. I consider him much cooler for having appeared in the same episode of the Dukes of Hazzard as Cale Yarborough.

I would too, but I would rather see his commercials than some of the other ones. Jeff Clark is not terribly annoying to me either, he's just not my fave.

Speaking of Dell, you'd better steel yourself because you might be seeing even more of your "friend" Steven in the not too distant future. I read in the current issue of eWeek that Dell will soon be entering the printer and PDA market - and as their spokesperson, he'll be featured in both their print and TV commercial campaigns for those devices. ;)

It's also interesting to note that Dell's current ad campaigns must be doing something right because it was recently reported that, in a time when most computer technology companies are reporting loses, Dell's revenue increased 12%. ;D

However.

The annoying Dell kid only impinges on my nerves when he's in a commercial. Having nothing invested in Dell, its commercials, or its casting mistakes, I can safely fast forward, walk out of the room, etc.

I can't quite do that for Roger Davis, who is in a frustratingly huge number of scenes.

So Jeff gets my vote.

I'm pretty sure I caught some talking head just this morning on CNBC, discussing the "education segment" of the personal computer market.....

Litttle Stevie must be doing one hell of a job because Dell is sitting on fully ONE THIRD of the market in personal computers for students!!!

Jeff Clark, on the other hand, couldn't convince me to buy anything except maybe a contract with a hit man.

As for Jeff Clark/ Peter Bradford, I never was a fan of Roger Davis. Always thought that he had a big ego to feed and wanted everyone to know how great he was.

In their August issue, PC Magazine published their annual Reader's Poll. It might surprise you that Dell was ranked highest in overall satisfaction, service, reliability & willingness to buy again for both home and office use. Locally built and Gateway tied for 2nd. Compaq and emachines tied for last place with failing grades across the board.
The only category where Dell didn't place first was for notebooks - it placed 5th behind Apple, Hewlett-Packard, IBM & Toshiba, who all tied for 1st. Gateway came in 7th. And once again, Compaq came in last, this time tied with NEC.

And, the thought of someone procuring computers for his friends is far more pleasant (not to mention less odorous) to me than someone procuring body parts.

And, if we're talking real people as opposed to their characters, I still have to go with Ben (can't remember his last name) over Roger. Mainly because I've never heard of Ben striking one of his fans. :o

I suspect that Gateway's service is contributing to the success of Dell. I am surprised to read that about Compaq though, I had always heard good things about them and wouldn't have ever guessed that they would rank with the likes of emachines....

It has my husbands decision not the Dell boy. It had to be work friendly for him. The Dell kid doesn't bother me. We get some really cheesy commercials during DS, a tattoo parlor and I really hate some of the Sci-fi promos.

Jeff wins for more annoying at least for me.

1) KFC Man (KFC)
2) Eva Savealot (1-800 Collect)
3) The Talking Gecko (Geico)
4) Teri Hatcher (Radio Shack)

and that is just the tip of the Iceberg, ladies and gents.

So I'd have to say that Jeff Clark is more annoying.

Sometimes he just does a little movement of his eye or eyebrow to convey quite a bit. I keep wondering what he'd be like in a real part. I think, possibly, he could be a good actor and I'd love to find out.

As to that union business, I saw a few weeks ago that he was one of the ones in trouble and the next day there was something that supposedly they wouldn't be allowed to work, so I've been wondering about him. Since then I've seen him in two new commercials.

How many of you ladies would like to see that woman whose first words to you were "Don't hate me because I'm beautiful"? C'mon, admit it. Wouldn't we all like to see just how beautiful she is today?

And that little cartoon "Mr. Bubble" kid who scampered naked all over his bathroom, scaring his grandmother half to death by putting on a foam bubble beard and making her think "there's a man in the bathtub". Wouldn't we all love to see that grandma grab that brat and beat his bare butt till it was so red even she could see it?

Someday we'll all miss "Steven", the Dell kid. Right? NAH!

Im with you all the way MB. I keep wondering just how much longer will we have to put up with his screaming, shouting & hair pulling nonsense on the show??!

I don't mind the Dell boy all that much. I'd much rather see this commercial than that long dragged out one for Staples! And please, if I see one more AOL commercial......[scrm]

I know Dell is # 1 my sister bought one recently and RAVES about it (I never trust things rated # 1 but i believe in conspirsy theories too! ) Have had a lot of problems with Gateway but as my computer needs are low would rather put the money in a NEW JennAir stove
Stephen is right up there with "the "Where's The Beef Lady" hate the commercial because he is always telling adults what to get! those blonde dumb surfer dudes never my cup of tea Heehee Now I'd buy A Dell from Timothy Dalton!

Omg Carol, how could I forget about that one!![pissd] You're so right, that has got to be the MOST annoying commercial there is out there (along with AOL's) Everytime Im in CVS or any store and I hear somebody saying "can you hear me now?" I just want to hit them over the head![smash]

I must agree with Carol, too, though -- I've formed this mental image of the cell phone guy asking "Can you hear me now?" as he steps off the edge of the Grand Canyon.

Jeff Clark gets my vote on this one....... his storyline and hair playing is getting really old for me now.

I saw Carrot Top (someone who really does need to touch his hair) near the elevators of the MGM Grand when we were there for the 1998 DS Festival. He had a girl on each arm and an entourage following. GAG! Hey, where's that vomiting smiley? ?!?

LOL, you're right Gerard. Miss Cleo was worse than Jeff Clark and the Dell computer guy put together! Hearing her exclaim "call me now!" became almost as annoying as hearing Lang's infamous "if both live..." speech over and over!

I'm SO SICK of the Geiko commercials! Some of the ones WITHOUT the stupid Gekko aren't too bad - at least they tell you about their service. But they have gotten way too carried away with this little green mascot. That commercial where he was "auditioning" for the part is so self-serving it's worthless. What are they thinking???

I especially can't stand the girl who drops the plate to prove they serve food on real dishes. I would put her even above Carrie Cathy Cody Stokes in the irritation department - and that's saying something for me. Still, even these wait staff weenies wouldn't keep me from eating there. But then I've loved their hamburgers and chili for about 40 odd years now.

So glad, thanks! I think I saw that commercial once. I kind've sorta remember it. It's never shown here. It's been a long time since I've seen it. I don't even remember what the guy looks like.

The PC is as slow as a turtle and our company had a special that gave the employees a $500 credit if we bought one. Well this generosity on the company's part ended up costing me $125 for the tax deducted out of my paycheck 2 months later. Which brings up the question, when is a $500 credit not really a $500 dollar credit? ?!?

However, as annoying as Roger Davis is while in character, he is rather nice to look at. ;)

I get the giggles every time I get over to this board and see the latest count on Roger hair touching. It really seems like fun and not mean spirited at all. Nice job. ;D

As a matter of fact, Midnite and crew do an excellent job of maintaining this board and I like the little smileys all over the place. :)

That must have been the one for Dell's servers. Brian McNamara is doing that campaign, which is aimed at businesses. Good choice because I doubt many business people would buy Web servers from the Dell dude - not to mention he's definitely too young to be holding down a job like Enterprise Manager. [wink2]

Thanks, Raineypark, for the correction. Sadly, I am not familiar with Buffy as our WB station was dropped by our cable company at the end of Buffy's first season (which I DID watch). MB's avatar also reminded me of a character from Bela Lugosi's version of Dracula, namely the masked stagecoach driver (actually Dracula himself played by Bela) who picks up Renfield (Dwight Frye) to take him to the castle. Creepy!
