Dark Shadows had a few great actors.
Roger Davis was not the greatest, but he was certainly among the better ones -- besides being among the three or four best looking.

One of the most interesting things about DS is that it had such a diverse group of performers who could alternately fascinate or repulse any of us at any given moment. Everyone has their favorites - and not so favorites. ;)

Roger Davis does nothing for me. I think after seeing him in person I still was not impressed. In the defense in the shows run he was good looking---still that is just not enough.

I think Davis' problem was that he was not a very good short study. He obviously had difficulty remembering his lines, and was one of the few who allowed the flubs, falling props, missed lines, etc., to visibly distract and frustrate him. Undoubtedly, it was not easy for him to do a fast-paced show like DS, which - being "live-on-tape" - was virtually live; that is an awful lot of pressure. Whenever he appeared on programs or in movies where the director could call "cut" and reshoot until it was done right, he was far better (and I'm sure that, with some of the pressure off, mixed with being able to stop and reshoot, he was able to put in a more superior performance). He was fine, putting in a decent performance in "House of Dark Shadows"; I also recall him in other filmed projects, including an old "Twilight Zone" episode, where he exhibited a knack and talent for his craft.

I have to agree with your comment. I wonder what formula Curtis used for selecting the cast? They all seemed to work well together despite the diversity.

The problem with this line of defense is that the show's most POPULAR actor had the same difficulty. :)

Davis got on my nerves because he overacted, and in frequent flurries of anxiety, kept grabbing at clumps of his hair, but I have to admit that I did like him as Dirk Wilkins...AFTER he became the crazed vampire.

Cheers,
