Title: Joan Crawford Was A DS fan?!
Post by: Mysterious Benefactor on December 31, 2009, 06:52:48 PM
Or at least she was a Joan Bennett fan according to this blog: AND SHE WOULD WATCH 'DARK SHADOWS' TO CATCH A PERFORMANCE BY HER OLD FRIEND, THE OTHER JOAN , BENNETT THAT IS.

Yes, indeed. I heard about that some time ago.

I remember hearing the urban legend that Curtis Productions was also taking a look at Joan Crawford for the role of Elizabeth, but decided not to because she was already well know for being rather - shall we say - "problematic" to work with.

As much as I like Joan Bennett as Elizabeth, I still think it would have been amazing to see Joan Crawford in the role.  Had she done the role, she would have loved all the attention from a new generation of fans, and if she lived long enough, she certainly would have appeared at the DS Festivals.  Can you imagine?

And then there's the idea of Crawford acting opposite The Divine Grayson.  I certainly would need one of Dr. Hoffman's famous sedatives to handle that!

for me joan crawford has a rather "hard" presence that would have made her too rigid in the role of liz.

bennett could be icy and imperious but also possessed a sense of vulnerability and warmth that made the character so complex and allowed the audience to care about her.

crawford would have been a great bit of stunt casting but i'm glad the part was cast the way that it was.

Very interesting!  I cannot imagine anyone else as Elizabeth however it would have been interesting to see this! Perhaps in a PT somewhere she did place Elizabitch!

How about a plot involving the appearance of Elizabeth's never-known-to-exist-except-to-Elizabeth step-sister, played by Miss Crawford?  She was the result of a little diddly-do Daddy Jamison had once had on the side and the family was able to cover it up.  And step-sister Joanie C. has returned for a very specific reason.......decades ago, again under the pressure of her ostracizing Collins family, had been forced to give up her newborn daughter, Victoria, who like Mommie Dearest was the result of a little diddly-do.  And the last Step-Sis heard from her own investigations into finding her kid was that House Momma Elizabeth had hired her.....Maybe they could've done this in 1971 if the series had continued and Miss Crawford, who was wrapping up her career, would've thought it would be fun to work with her long-time friend, Joan Bennett for a few months.  It would have been a much better swan song than Trog.

I'm afraid Joan Crawford (whose films I adore) would have been a disaster on DS.  If you've never seen it, catch the sequence in the Faye Dunaway classic Mommie Dearest in which they re-create Joan's attempt to replace daughter Christina on her own soap (can't recall which one it was at the moment) when Tina was sidelined due to an illness or surgery.  It's a hoot.

Apart from other considerations, "Miss C" always demanded that her sets be kept cold enough to double as meat lockers (apparently, she broke a sweat very easily when the temp rose, which wreaked havoc with all that makeup).  I doubt they would have been able to accommodate this, and her numerous other demands on DS.

Gothick, it was The Secret Storm that JC appeared on briefly replacing Christina.

If they did cast Joan Crawford, they may have ended up recasting Liz eventually.  Joan Crawford may not have been able to handle the pressures of a daily soap opera.

i wish that "the secret storm" was available on dvd. the dark shadows connection runs deep.

joel crothers, clarice blackburn, diana millay, conard fowkes and james storm(perhaps others as well)were all castmembers.

The main reason why there's such a connection is that Robert Costello produced the show right after leaving DS in late 1969!

I hate to think of the girls and boys on DS having to spend any time with Joan Crawford.
At least Joan Bennett was a lady.

Oh, I don't know, if Joan Crawford had been around, maybe the other actors could have had fun using her antics (whatever they might turn out to have been) to sharpen their performances a notch or two.

JC could easily have played the vulnerability of the JB characters: look at her work in Baby Jane. But JC could never have learned lines on 1 days notice, as Secret Storm proved!                                        JB 4 EVER!                                                                                       David

Joan Crawford always gave me the creeps (long before I read “Mommie Dearest”).  Still, I could see her in a temporary (Jason McGuire length) role as (I believe Gerard) mentioned because her inherent creepiness (IMO at least) could have worked I think.  Even though she was very believable as the weenie Blanche in Baby Jane I could definitely see her as a one of the more evil villains.

And to imagine Joan Crawford, determined at all costs to be seated in front of her TV set every Monday thru Friday at 4pm on ABC, no matter what else was happening in her life at that moment, so she could get her daily DS fix. Love the image!

Pity no one has ever unearthed the videotapes of Joan C's week on The Secret Storm back in 1968 (other than, as Gothick mentioned, the re-creation of its dark-but-hysterical moments in "Mommie Dearest"). Perhaps they just don't exist, or Joan had the only copies (a gift from CBS) and promptly burned them!

If Christina Crawford appeared on DS instead during that time, it sure would have been interesting!

Christina could have played the disturbed young woman shut away in the attic who kept refusing to eat her steak dinner. Basically a believable DS storyline based entirely on her actual life experiences.

We should be grateful she never auditioned for Carolyn and got the part.  Imagine Joan Crawford playing daughter to Joan Bennett!

Also, JC married a bigshot with Pepsi and became their spokeswoman. Just imagine - instead of brandy, Roger would have been pouring Pepsi for everyone at Collinwood, it would be the drink of choice at the Blue Whale, and after digging graves and other assorted tasks, Willie would kick back with an ice cold bottle of Pepsi! DARK SHADOWS brought to you by the Pepsi Generation!

Thankfully product placement wasn't that invasive back in those days. But it might have been hysterically funny if it had been played out the way you describe...

Somehow, though, I can't imagine Roger giving up brandy for anything.  [wink2]

If JC played Liz, she could have turned to Jason and said: DONT F WITH ME, FELLA!! This aint my first time down by the rodeo!

....and don't forget her wearing those F**K Me pumps, either!  She would've chewed out both Dennis Patrick and Mitch Ryan and spat them out, with a Pepsi chaser (in her case, mixed with 100 proof Smirnoff vodka)!

Maybe Pansy Faye would have gotten to sing "I've Written a Letter to Daddy" instead of "I Wanna Dance with You"... [snow_wink]

Ann Blyth as Carolyn to JCs Liz?                                               Joan Blondell as Mrs Johnson?                                    Lauren Bacall as Julia?                                                                 David

I was thinking that if Crawford played Elizabeth, her ol' rival, Bette Davis, could play Julia. I would give anything to hear Bette Davis-as-Julia see the Old House cellar for the first time and say: "Barnabas, what a dump!". [snow_wink]
