Title: New Appreciation for DS
Post by: ClaudeNorth on November 30, 2009, 12:45:25 AM
I started re-watching the series from episode #1, and am now viewing the early Barnabas episodes.  I have to say that watching these episodes in their original context has given me a new appreciation for just how good a show DS was, and is.  It's as if I'm watching the series for the first time, with no prior knowledge of it.  Seeing the transition from Gothic drama to full-on horror makes me realize how daring a move it was to introduce a vampire into a daytime drama.  I find myself thinking, "I can't believe they actually got away with this!"  Especially impressive is the exploration of the vampire myths and legends from a scientific standpoint, which brings a strange realism to the often fantastic happenings.

DC and Company were truly ahead of their time.

I still haven't seen most of these.   Anyway, the experience you're having is why, after I become enthusiastic about a program, I try to watch ep's in order from the start.   It always adds another entire dimension.

I started collecting THE COLLECTORS SERIES in early 2009!  I have truly loved watching DS from the beginning! I have been in fandom for nearly 20 years and had never watched these episodes.  I couldn't bring myself to buy them on VHS because I knew DVD was coming so I kept myself from buying them.  It has been a TRUE joy to watch these early episodes.  And especially a joy to see the introduction of DS, Laura, Barnabas and of course Julia Hoffman as she is my favorite character!  I am on Collection 8 on the regular sets and have finally come full circle! I am going right now to purchase some sets to keep up with the WP and to keep my own WP going!
