Demographics are very important. The desirable age group is 17 to 24 I believe. That's the group the advertisers are trying to get. I think with the popularity of Twilight, a film with Depp and a few younger actors thrown in would be a big deal about now. I'm a little worried that if Depp waits too long to get started, he will be too old for the role. He's now older than Frid was when he started as Barnabas. For TV, I think there was too much DC interference in the WB pilot (JMO). I surprised my self and rented Twilight at Blockbuster and actually enjoyed most of it. The ending was too over the top for me but overall I'd rate it a high B.

The '91 series had several problems, including input from DS (Gene Roddenberry did something similar with ST but he was much older and couldn't accomplish as much) and bad luck involving the First Gulf War.
The WB pilot foundered (evidently) on a judgment call by the network execs.
The new movie is just facing some problems involving logistics, but is nowhere near dead as far as I can tell.
Getting any t.v. show or movie mode requires a lot of luck. Dark Shadows just needs some more luck is all. That such shows as The Vampire Diaries and True Blood are proving to be such hits can only help.
