This question is mostly for the ladies. ;)
Ok, he(Jonathan Frid) isn't classically handsome with his hook nose, bug eyes, and weird ears(if u disagree with this description - im sorry - didnt mean to offend anyone), but for some reason, when u put it all together, to me there is sexiness there. Maybe his voice has alot to do with this, or the way he carries himself, i don't know, but it works for some reason.

ROFL - BUG eyes???? He doesn't have BUG eyes! :o
When ya put it all together, it works, huh?? LOL
(sorry - this is striking me funny)
No, seriously. A LOT of women find Barnabas sexy. IMHO, it's his manner, the way he speaks, the way he moves, and the reserved, cultured way about him. There's a mystique there. Plus, I don't know....a lot of times I find him quite handsome. There are lots of people who find him VERY handsome.

Oh you have not. ;)
(You couldn't offend me if you tried).
(Don't start trying - Midnite might get mad)

Yes! That, and dinner with Adam at the Old House.
*Crawls into bed frightened* :-X
Well, you SHOULD be. LOL

You know, I've never gotten the Barnabas is sexy message. I can admit that he has a marvelous voice and great presence (not to mention a wounded nature that seems to bring out the mother in some women), but every time I begin to change my mind about Barn, I end up seeing an episode like the ones we've seen this week and he ends up coming across as too creapy to be hot.
Another time another place, maybe, but he just doesn't do it for me. :-/
-

I agree -Now lets talk about Quentin Collins, Gerard Stiles or Chris/Tom Jennings!
-
He's got a great voice. And presence. I intensely dislike the Barnabas character, but usually when Frid's playing him, unless he's got a scene stealer like Thayer David or Clarice Blackburn next to him, it's Frid I end up looking at. Can't help it.
And actually, when Barnabas is being forthrightly evil (as opposed to this righteous crap we're slogging through now), I do find him mildly sexy and I can see why other people do too.
However, as Eleni, so aptly put it, he doesn't do it for me either. Brooding eyes and a great voice is all very well, but a man needs a sense of humor and Barnabas doesn't have one 8)

He may have a "hooked nose", bugged eyes and "weird ears", but you put them all together, and you've got one of the sexiest man alive.
His voice is as refreshing as a cold drink of spring water, and his presence,... his presence leaves me and alot of other girls, that grew into women....WOMEN.
"Is Barnabas sexy?"
I would love him to ask me to be his housekeeper. I'd be a happy camper then.
-
It's not a strange question at all and, I suspect, one that has been hotly debated over the years.
I don't personally consider Barnabas sexy, but I can understand why some people do. First of all, he has more than his share of class and his voice is deep, his way of speaking elegant in an almost British, clipped sort of way. Add to that his brooding, tortured gaze and you have all the elements of an intriguing, mysterious man. As for looks, Barnabas isn't handsome the modern sense, but with his hair a bit softer and the dark circles from under his eyes removed, he is certainly above average in looks. Like many gentlemen I find attractive, his face has character.
And I would call Barn's eyes deep-set, not bug-eyed.
By contrast, someone like Joe Haskell (and maybe Jeff Clark and Tom Jennings, too) are handsome, but I find their mugs rather bland and unintriguing compared to Barnabas'. (My apologies to all Crothers and Briscoe fans!)
-
I agree -Now lets talk about Quentin Collins, Gerard Stiles or Chris/Tom Jennings!
Definitely Quentin! Even the first Burke.
And Joe.
But Barnabas is a little too self centered most of
the time for my taste.

I, too, fall in the category of those who don't find Barnabas sexy. Frid is an appealing, watchable actor, but IMHO, not sex symbol material.
That said, I will admit that I found Frid-as-Bramwell surprisingly sexy. I'm sure a lot of it has to do with the more flattering hair and make-up used for the character, but I also think it was due to Frid's acting. His portrayal of Bramwell was more overtly sexual (lust without guilt) than his portrayal of Barnabas, and I think that it just might have been his best work on the series.
As for my personal hottie picks:
1. Brian Sturdivant: Best known as Claude North, he first appeared wearing a tight-fitting bellhop uniform in a dream sequence.
2. Geoffrey Scott: Rarely discussed (as far as I can tell) cast member with minimal talent but male model looks. He shows up during Leviathan as Schuyler Rumson.
Regards,
John

When the series was on, I had a big crush on Don Briscoe. I thought he was so cute, and I was so pleased to discover a set of twin boys who rode my school bus everyday who had Briscoe's boyish looks.
For me, attractiveness has little to do with looks inasmuch as the whole package. Many of the guys everyone acknowledges as being "cute" I find dull overall. They're cute alright but that's just about it.

Is Barnabas sexy? My Mother sure thinks so! ;)
-
If you read any Frid interviews during the run of the series, he says how ridiculous he felt being in the teen magazines and never considered himself or Barnabas to be sexy. Obviously a couple million of other people did find him attractive and that was an overall package concept. IIRC, he referred to the Tom Jennings vampire as "bad pornography" though he acknowledged the take was deliberately more sensual.
He also attributed the lost, tortured look on Barnabas' face as really him, the actor, being nervous in front of the camera and looking for lines.

I don't think this is strange OR offensive. I don't agree with the bug eyes, but that is a quibble. You also forgot to mention the bad skin!
Yes, I think Barney IS sexy. I don't find him as much so (now that I'm the right age for him) as I did when I was a teenager watching the show. I suspect that the brooding self pity is part of what struck a chord with me then. His voice is wonderful, and his reserve with women is sexy.
I don't think you can pin his appeal on any one element. When you look at him closely, it IS hard to figure out. And yet.....
-
I'll have to go along with Perankh, here. If one analyzes specific features, he wouldn't seem to be a candidate for sexiness. But, the whole package definitely is!!!

Why is this question "mostly for the ladies"? Now, Perankh, you've offended me! (Just kidding!) :P
Is Jonathan Frid sexy? When I was buying all those 16 and Tiger Beat magazines (solely for the DS articles, you understand... certainly not for all those hot and sweaty pin ups of Davy Jones and Sajid Kahn!) I must admit I snickered every time that I saw this "older" man sharing the cover with these teeny bopper/ 20 somethings. With pin ups of Frid on every other page, I was almost tempted to share the mags with my dear old granny. I think, even then, seeing Frid in the unnaturally posed photographs and noting what looked like the grimmacing face of a man afraid, I imagined that Frid must be just as uncomfortable in these mags as Barnabas often was when he was stammering for his next line. One magazine featured Frid, in full Barnabas mode, in about 8 to 10 full color pix, "menacing" a young hippie couple (who were clearly laughing during the shoot), giving the entire spread a sort of "two's company, three's a crowd" comedic look. It was as if grandpa had caught the young'uns kissing goodnight and was about to throttle the hippie boy with his cane.
Still, to all those teenage girls (that I didn't understand then and understand even less today) and all those naked housewives who sent such photos of themselves to Frid, I have to admit that on several occasions I found the character of Barnabas giving me a.... thrill, of sorts. (I'm too embarrassed to tell you which scenes, though.)
But, in general, when I think of DS I usually don't think of sexy people. I think, many of us considered the Collins' our second family outside of the harsh daily reality of growing up in the late 60s/ early 70s. And, apart from a brief crush on a cousin (who had come in all sweaty and hot from mowing the lawn), I don't usually think "sexy" when I think of "family". So, I have to stretch real hard to find someone on DS that I (personally) find "sexy".
Still, "Claude North" beat me to the punch here when he mentioned the tight bell hop suit that Brian Sturdivant wears in Mr. Best's waiting room. Now, THAT was sexy! :-*

because most men are homophobes and are not willing to discuss other mens' desirability. :-/
-
Barnabas does have this sexy edge to him that i have always liked.I love that gaze he gives Julia sometimes and the innocent look he throws out when he is questioning someone. He is tall(i have always liked that),Dark, and a gentleman. So yes, he is sexy.
P.S.Perankh....my brother thinks Barnabas is sexy also.-----Sorry homophobes!!!!
-Adra ;)
P.S.S.--Barnabas could have bitten me anyday
-
because most men are homophobes and are not willing to discuss other mens' desirability.
While I hope that "most" men (in general) are not homophobes, here in this forum I think this is certainly not the case. And conversely, if a man is not willing to discuss other mens' desirability, I don't think that necessarily makes him a homophobe. JMO. :)
-
well - i mean - if a guy can't even say if asked that another man is nice looking - he is homophobic.
Thats all - if he is hot, then why not say it? There is only 1 reason

I thought he was sexy but then I was already thirty when I started watching DS.
I like rugged older fellows. I loved Clint Eastwood in "The Bridges of Madison County". My girlfriend thought they should have cast a younger man in that role, but then she is the one who thought Don Briscoe was the cat's meow. We were the same age, she liked the younger fellows.
It was terribly embarrassing to buy teen magazines in local stores to get DS pictures. Small town USA.
Puts me in mind of old codgers buying Playboy.
Just my 2 cents worth.

Connie,
I love it. You cracked me up this morning. Is Frid sexy, hard to say. He does have appeal, but I don't know if sexy is the word I would use. Do love the voice.

for me my dears... the reason barnabas is soooo sexy is because he is such a snappy dresser. i'm sorry guys the jeans dragging down your legs or the messy t-shirts just don't work for me.
the cape is also very attractive. observe how he carries himself about with his cane. not in a "dandy" way either. smooth as glass and elegant.
also, he is quite romantic. the way in which he speaks. always polite. a very deep voice. the penetrating eyes. you know he wants you.
but ulimately it's the ring he wears. i just luv that ring.
well .... that's why barnabas is sexy.

Just a few quick comments-- nobody is forced to answer within any topic if they don't want to, and conversely, anybody that wants to add their opinion to a topic has always been welcome to do so regardless of their sex or sexual preference. And please, let's not put labels on each other.
-
Like several others here I do like Frid's voice. That's why his one man shows work so well - along with his skill as an actor he needs nothing more on that stage than a the voice, the microphone and a stool (hey, give him a break he's almost 78 he deserves to sit down even if he isn't tired!) ;D
As to DS sex appeal I'll have to say I'm more interested in the likes of Selby, Briscoe and Karlen. :-*
-
:oIs Barnabas sexy???? In a word-----YES. But then, I was one of those "crazies" back in the 60's who bought those magazines (disguised, of course). You're not alone, Tanis!!!

From the age of 12-16, when DS went off the air, I found myself lusting after Barnabas--and Jonathan Frid, the man who portrayed him. He did something to my teenage hormones, revving them up to dangerous boil. I fantasized (I will NOT give details) constantly. Then again, I was a sad teenager with an unhappy home life and escaping to DS and the lust I felt for Barnabas/Jonathan kept me going.
His charisma affected me--that voice, those clothes, his urbane manner and his unique, handsome-homely face. Barnabas, to me WAS sexy, very much so, and now, at the advanced age of 48, I still see what attracted me.
And that photo of Frid as Edmund in SEIZURE--oh, damn, it's torrid enough here, don't make me melt!!!
Love, Robin

And if you're a straight male, how can you discuss Barnabas' desirability since you don't desire males?
However, speaking as a SM, I think B does have classical good looks, and his sophisticated and charming demeanor is a breath of fresh air. That given, I don't blame women for finding him sexy -- J. Depp on the other hand is another story! :)

I personally found Barnabas handsome, though not exactly a sex symbol. But he sure was nice on the eyes. ;)

Entrancing, mesmerizing, romantic...but not "sexy"...that's a teeny-bopper term, and JF is a man--ALL man!

but not "sexy"...that's a teeny-bopper term
Lest there be any doubt, note that boy band alum Justin Timberlake has taken it upon himself to bring sexy back. ;D

I clearly recall watching the show in '67, 11 years old, and thinking Frid was "cute".
Not sexy, but cute.
Six years later I realized I was gay, but I suspect that thinking Frid was cute was an early sign!!

Ok, I'm choosing this thread to make my first appearnce here at the board. I joined some time ago but just haven't had the time to post. Here's my take on the question... Now, I may be in the minority here but I thought Barnabas was very sexy when he kidnapped Maggie and the whole "You will be Josette and marry me" type of thing. I've never really thought of him as physically attractive but in those scenes I did catch myself breathing harder and rooting for Barnabas and not Maggie. There have been a few other times in the series when I did, for a moment or two find myself attracted to him. Such as that moment in 1840 when he
almost bites Julia.
What can I say? I think vampires in generally are incredibly sexy, and Barnabas did have that fabulous vioce and manner about him that was very sexy even if he appearance may not have been.
Linda
P.S. I'm much more of a Quentin girl,lol. :)
