I just read in today's (7/5/09) Parade magazine that Jonathan Frid just may do a cameo in Johnny Depp's upcoming DS film. How great is that? [ghost_grin]

Hi Adamsgirl. Thanks for the information. After you posted it I managed to find the link to that Q&A.

Great, Jimbo! Thanks.
-
Thanks adamsgirl and jimbo! It may just be speculation, but I think it'd be awesome if Jonathan could be in it!!
-
You are welcome Adamsgirl. That was a nice catch.
Madscntst I would also have to guess that Frid's role in the movie is based on speculation. I would think Depp would love to have Jonathan in the movie. It would be great indeed.
-
I think Depp and Burton would both love to have Frid in the film, as both are fans.
But I'd like to know where the info comes from~~Frid declined to do the audio dramas and declined a small role in the WB pilot.
As much as I'd love to see him in the film, I'm not going to expect it.

Exactly David, I think that Personality Parade is basically just a gossip column, and I have caught many mistakes/fabrications by them in the past. Still, giving JF a cameo is just the sort of thing that Johnny and Tim would probably love to do, but only if they can get something suitable into the script (and if JF were to agree to it, of course!). (Eagle Hill Cemetary caretaker?? Another cousin from England??) I'll be hoping!

SG Update #196 announced this:
**** DS ARTICLE IN PARADE MAGAZINE
A photo of Jonathan Frid as "Barnabas" and information about DS and the Newark Fest will be in the Personality Parade column on Page 2 of Parade Magazine 7-5. The magazine is "seen by some 80 million readers in 400 U.S. papers each Sunday."
I would hardly call it an "article." [ghost_huh] But obviously SG was aware it would be printed this weekend, so that might give a bit more credence to the possibility that Frid will or has been offered the cameo. Though, as others have pointed out, he hasn't taken up any such offers in the past.
-
If you get this with your Sunday papers, you may have noticed this (with a classic "Barnabas" photo) in the "Personality Parade" Q&A feature.
Scroll down, next-to-last question--- alas, no photo here.

I doubt that Frid will be in the movie. I was there at fest when the subject came up about being offered a small part in the '04 pilot. I can't recall his exact words, but his answer made it pretty clear that he didn't want to be traipsing around Hollywood with the stress of being on a movie/tv set at his age. If somebody can better recall his exact words, I'd appreciate a refresher on them!
-
Well, JF turned down the offer of working in the radio dramas because he didn't want (and won't) re-create Barnabas again. Back in 2003 or so when the new pilot was being made, JF wasn't attending festivals or doing anything professionally. He was pretty much enjoying retirement.
JF is in a very different place now in 2009.
Just saying . . .

In any case, as much as I would love to see JF in a "cameo" appearance, I can't imagine him doing so because he seems to have turned down other opportunities before. But who knows?? What role do you think he would play though? Anything is possile in Hollywood I guess.

Frid in drag as Liz or Naomi could be a wonderful challenge for him - and fascinating to watch. [ghost_cheesy] But I suppose they won't be going there - especially when one would hope that if Liz or Naomi appear, her part won't simply be a cameo.
One also has to remember that the film is supposedly shooting entirely in England. Though, if Frid did decide to accept a role and he wasn't up to traveling to England, perhaps his bit could be shot here or even in Canada...
-
Frid is a good mimic and could probably play Julia with a little make-up and a nice dress. Anything but orange or green though.

I'm afraid I was unclear in my previous post when I mentioned that Frid reacted negatively to being in films or TV again.. that was last year, at the '08 fest in Burbank.
Of course, he could have changed his mind since then. I would love to see him in the new movie!
-
He ought to play the desk clerk at the Collinsport Inn.

What do you mean, no orange or green? He would have to wear orange or green! Those were Julia's signature style colors! If Mr. Frid didn't wear some outfit in that scheme, it would confuse everyone in the viewing audience. They would mistake him for someone else. Why, they would think he was playing...playing...it's so hard for me to say it...Auntie Hannah.

An orange and green desk clerk! It doesn't get any better than that! Now how on earth could he turn that chance down? [ghost_grin]
-
Oh, great. Now I have to floss my brain. [ghost_blink]

I'd be very thrilled to see Jonathan Frid in a cameo role for the new DS. It'd be nice to see other original cast members put in appearances as well!

It is very unlikely Jonathan will accept even a Cameo Role. While always gracious to DS fans, he always tries to distance himself from the show. During a performance of his "Reader's Theater" in Chicago several years ago, Jonathan mentioned his involvement with DS. Then he reminded us that dwelling in the past is "unhealthy" and of course, there was yours truly with a Dark Shadows Concordance, waiting for an autograph and picture with my idol. He pointed to me as if to use me as an example, then chuckled. Later, he greeted me warmly, posed with me for a picture and autographed my concordance. The August Fest will be the first time I have seen him since that memorable evening.
-
I would'nt know if JF would accept the cameo role or not, but I can understand when he turned down to make appearances in the audio dramas and the WB pilot. But the new movie will be on the big screen, so will he still reject the offer?
-
I don't see any reason why he wouldn't accept an assignment or a cameo appearance. Its only been recently that he's been attending the Fests after many years absense. I can see Frid as an elderly gentlemen living near Collinwood who is invited for dinner on occasion.
-
In other words, the male equivalent of Mrs. Pettibone, Camila Ashland's costume party guest in hoDS. [ghost_wink]
-
MB, that's just what I was thinking! I was picturing a scene at the ball, where Jonathan, wearing the exact same costume he had in HoDS (it would probably have to be a recreation since the original must have turned to moth balls and scrap years ago), being introduced to Barnabas Collins (Depp). Of course, Barnabas is wearing a nearly-identical costume and makes a comment to Jonathan's character about the similarity. Jonathan makes some remark such as: "But then I've always had an interest in the Collins family."
Gerard
-
Well, JF can't be accused of "always" trying to distance himself from DS when he attends festivals and his website features many comments about his time on DS, including writing essays about Barnabas. http://www.jonathanfrid.com That's not someone always trying to distance himself from DS. [ghost_wink]

Frid in drag??? Hell to the No.....I can't see that...especially not as Julia or Elizabeth. He does not seem to look good in orange. I'm not sure of green. However green would draw out his eye color which look hazel to me. But what do I know? How about as a Mr. Braithwaite? Nah not even that loony character. I guess the question would be what would draw a large fan base to the movie? Frid definitely would.
-
If the film is done well, it will probobly be Deep that will draw the most people. It will bring the younger fans. That is what DS needs.
JF being in the movie would be great. They would make the older cast members be like can
you spot them in the movie for us older guys. Deep will want to keep us happy also.
-
There is nobody who would love and adore seeing JF in any role whatsoever in the new movie more than me - however, his response about doing so at the last fest was something along the lines of "I'm too old to be traipsing around movie and tv sets". That was not in reference to any particular project (if I recall correctly), but just in general.
Still, we can hope that the lure of an A list team might draw him to the Depp movie.

My parents saved that parade article for me! It was nice to see DS in the media!
