Title: OT: Guiding Light Cancelled
Post by: David on April 02, 2009, 05:05:47 AM
After a remarkable & historic 72 year run, Guiding Light goes dark in Sept.
A few DS connections:
current producer Ellen Wheeler played Phyllis Wick on the 91 DS.
Marie Wallace had a role in '89.
Chris Pennock was on for awhile in the early 90s.

An era has truly ended.

How could you forget Geoffrey Scott as Billy Lewis? ... Oh, wait - the soap press cheered when he was fired. That must be why you forgot him. OK. Never mind...

72 years?  Was it on since 1937 on radio?

It began on radio in 1937, switched to TV in 1952, with the cast doing double duty on radio & TV till 1956.

And I believe its the last Procter & Gamble sponsored soap.

GL has been horrid these past few years, I can't say I'm that sorry to see it go.

It's kind of sad even though I haven't watched a daytime soap in years, that one was a favorite of my mom and grandma's growing up so I remember it fondly.

Actually, P&G still has As The World Turns.  I wouldn't be surprised if P&G began shopping GL to a cable network: Lifetime, Hallmark, USA, SoapNet, TNT, TBS, even TVLand!  So, the CBS run may be over, but I wouldn't be surprised if the show continued to live elsewhere.

I got my first "acting" job on GL as an extra.

I find it sad that GH is cancelled.  My grandmother listened to it on the radio and still remembers certain elements.  I am fan of General Hospital.  It makes me sad because I am afraid 10 yrs from now the the genre may be gone all too together.  I look for Days to go next since they have gotten rid of most of the vets and it's so horrid now.  All soaps should look to Y & R (which I don't watch) they currently have a 80 yr old veteran on the frontburner.  They try to save money letting vets go but it dooms soaps, in the end, in my opinion!

I watched it when I was little, possibly up to early teens.  I haven't seen it since.  I heard that the producers or sponsors (forget which) haven't given up and are trying to find another place for it, possibly on cable.

Our newspaper gave an example of some plotlines though, and parts of it seem like they could have come from DS:

"There were always enough outlandish story arcs to keep viewers interested.  One of the more colorful characters, Reva Shayne Lewis Lewis Spaulding Lewis Cooper Lewis Lewis O'Neill (Kim Zimmer), married a father and both of his sons, drove her car off a pier, disappeared for years, returned as a ghost, then turned out to have been living with the Amish, and also on an island where she'd coupled with a prince and had a whole other family.  In addition she was cloned.  Oh, and she traveled through time, too."

I looked the time travelling thing up on youtube and Reva stepped through a portrait which took her back in time.  Sound familiar??? ;)  And whoever is helping me get more negative points!  Thanks! :)

Thanks.   Knowing it was on that long, which seems inconceivable, I don't want it to go, even though I'm not soapish...

It will be hard for any show to ever beat it's record.  I think that AS THE WORLD TURNS is the next oldest soap still on tv although I could be wrong...
