Title: Make Your home COLLINWOOD!!!
Post by: A.I.Collins on July 01, 2002, 07:38:12 AM
Hey guys!...Adra here.Does anyone here refer to places in their home like places in or around Collinwood.Take for instance myself. My mom and I live in a two bedroom apartment.I call the area around/near the front door the foyer.Since our living room is not closed off from the rest of the apartment, i call it the drawing area. :-/

The balcony in the back of our apartment is called the terrace. ::)

Since my bedroom is located at the end of the hallway.I say it is the door to the west wing.

So my room happens to be the west wing of our apartment. :o

I even had a portrait of my mother and I painted and hung it in the corridor.(hallway) ;D

Anyone else ever did anything strange motivated from Dark Shadows???

Well, I could call our unfinished basement the mausolem.
Have I  done anything strange because of DS?
When I was 10 I think, I was watching DS (you know
how intently kids get into tv) anyway it was pouring rain
with thunder and lightening outside. My dad was coming in wearing his rain poncho. He saw me zombied
out on watching Barnabas vamping someone. So he flapped
his poncho and swooped down on me. I passed out.
I guess I thought Barnabas was going to get me. LOL!

Question 1:  My wife regularly refers to my downstairs 'Listening/Video room' as the 'dungeon', and my Beatles collection room as the 'mausoleum' [I prefer 'shrine']

Question 2: ...almost every time I get to thinking about TLATKLS [have you seen the latest pics from the fest??  Va-va-va voom! :P]

I need to dig out that photo of the subdivision [Collinwood] near my dad's house again!

Well, my family is obbsessed with our ancestors, which is not bad thing. But, when you walk in to my house, there's a huge picture of my Great Grandfather Scholtz. I sort of reminds me of the picture of Barnabus in Collinwood.

We also have an old album with my Grandma's pictures in it, it also has some pages from diaries that my Great-Grandfather wrote during his life, i call that album the 'Family History Book'  :)

There is also a room that we never use, it has all this junk in there, and it's dusty in there. I like to call it the 'West Wing' ;)

Oh Lord....
When I was young, my best friend and I did quite a few nutty things motivated by DS - most of which are rather embarrassing.    :-X

Probably the most ridiculous was a phoney phone call we made to Grayson Hall.  We recorded it and laughed for hours afterwards - playing it over and over.
(We were CRAZY about Grayson!!  Loved her madly).

;D  Hey!  What can I say?  Sam Hall was always listed in the Manhattan phone book.  Let's see...if I remember correctly, they lived at 853 7th Ave.

Anyone remember where Jonathan lived before he moved uptown????  I mean, he had long had his number changed, but his address was still in there!
Ya know, I can't remember what happened yesterday, but I certainly remember his address 35 years ago.  ROFL
157 East 18th Street

We went down to his apartment building a couple of times hoping maybe we'd see him walk in or out.
Never did.   :'( :'( :'(

Well, now that you mention it,my living room could be called the drawing room(it has a victorian flavor to the decor). My bedroom(with a few touches)could be vicky's bedroom. My backyard has a grass overgrown brick patio that i could convert into the gazebo with a brick wall and fountain/statue.

When we walked home from school we used to have to go through an older section of my neighborhood with a long curving road lined with large mature trees.  As you were about to enter the newer portion of the addition, there were two particularly old trees on either side of the road, which made me think of a stately entryway.  I used to try to imagine that I was walking down the long drive to Collinwood (where I lived, of course  8) ).  It seemed especially fun to imagine on crisp fall days when the sky was overcast and foreboding.  Always wanted to live in an older two story house too¢â‚¬¦our one story, red brick ranch didn't really lend itself to my Collinwood estate fantasy too well.  But, I would still LOVE [crazy] to have the $$[greed] $$ to build a house with a replica of the Collinwood foyer and drawing room!

When my grand-daughter, shes only 4 but loves DS, and I are out in the car, she insists that we take "the Collinswood way" home.  By this, she means a road that is out in the woods, a beautiful creek on the right side, and at any moment, you would expect to see Collinswood.  Actually, this road is right in town, but for a minute, you feel like your going to see Collinswood.

Yes, my living room is right by the front door to your right, it also has a Victorian flavor, I think I'll call it the 'drawing Room'.

Now what really reminds me of Collinwood is my Grandma's house, it's big and over 100 years old, My Great Grandfather and his 17 Brothers and  Sisters lived in it, now only 5 people live in it. ::). But, it's not my house, so it doesn't count :-*.

For about four or five years, I rented an old house in an old neighborhood very near to where I worked. I finally changed jobs and bought my own home in a newer, nicer neighborhood. To this day I continue to make reference to when I "Lived in The Old House." It sounds perfectly reasonable to anyone I say it to, but they don't know I'm mentally capitalizing "Old" and "House."

That cartoon is soooo true, Ringo. I can't remember any of the things I learned in classes that I could have cared less about, but I can remember all the major moments in every DS episode - and I can recite some of my favorite passages of dialogue completely from memory. [lghy]

Fun topic! When I was a kid my mother had her hope chest in her walk in bedroom closet. It resembled (to my little kid eyes) Barnabas's coffin!

I went to a Catholic grade school in Cincinnati and one year our classes were held at the College of Mt. St. Joseph. It was an hill overlooking the Ohio River. The grounds remined me of Collinwood and a nearby road was called Sister's Hill(ala Widow's Hill) because it was windy and twisty and had steep cliffs looking over the river.

Yep - this cartoon is too true.
It's sad when ya have to keep looking at the calendar to try and remember what you're supposed to be doing.
BUT...there's no problem at all being able to sing every word of a Beatles song you haven't heard in years when it comes on the radio.
AND, not only sing the lead, but the harmony as well.
(Not at the same time, of course)  [chkyb]

Oh dear...forgot what this message was about...

No - I don't have the tape.  My friend has it SOMEWHERE but doesn't know where it's packed away.

Connie, I want to hear your Grayson Hall phone call story!

That said, I don't remember referring to my home in any Collinwood way, but I do remember walking into a dark-paneled, gloomy house while house-hunting, and turning to my husband to say, "This reminds me of DARK SHADOWS!"  (But not in a good way--we didn't purchase the house).

While I watched DARK SHADOWS in junior high, I was taking French, and our teacher told us to give ourselves a French name.  I was Josette, of course, and it make French class a lot more interesting to me to be called by the name of Barnabas' love.

I have to go to the drawing room now--later!

Love, Robin

Well, the space where the carpet seam is after the front door, before the living room is the foyer. Our living room/family room is the drawing room. Our small crappy basement is the mausoleum. The attic is the Old House. My yard could be the woods (it has a veggie garden). My room could be Vicki's room. Our computer room could be the West Wing. The larger bedroom could be Liz's room. I have a very Collinwood house. Cool!

Robin,

You had mentioned you had the name Josette in French class. We do the same thing in Spanish class, of course with Spanish names. While there aren't too many Spanish names on Dark Shadows, I was able to find one that I really liked and now use. Leticia! The Spanish pronounciation sounds awesome. Instead of La-tish-a, it is Lay-tee-cee-ah. I love it!

Alas and alack, I can't:

1. No lock on the door
2. My mother's closet is up here so she's constantly in the room.
3. The crawl spaces are accessed through it (so both the parental units are up here)
4. I have electric light  ;)

Sorry, Connie. My condolences go out to you and your family. :'(

Thanks people.
In an effort to get into some DS silliness and distract myself from family turmoil for awhile, here's the lowdown on the fateful phone call.  LOL

My friend Susan was sleeping over that night.  Guess we were bored.  It helps if you remember the character Lily Tomlin used to do on the show Laugh-In.  Remember 'Ernestine the Telephone Operator' ?
Well, Susan could do a better imitation than I could so SHE did the talking (plus I was chicken).  My big role was holding the microphone to the earpiece of the phone.  (wow)
Anyway, Grayson answered (!).  We half expected Sam or her son to answer.  We were so excited we were shaking!  Grayson on the phone!!!   :o

Here's how the call went.  (It's short, but WONDERFUL)  LOL  (At least it was to US!)

Grayson: Hello?
Susan: A gracious good evening.  Have I reached the party to whom I am speaking?  A Mrs. Grayson Hall?
Grayson: Yes?
Susan: This is Miss Tomlin from the phone company and according to our records, you have an overdue balance of sixty-four dollars and twenty-three cents.  When may we expect payment?
Grayson: (In an EXTREMELY leery tone)  You are WHO?
Susan:  Miss Tomlin...from the phone...(Grayson interrupted)
Grayson: That is not POSSIBLE, we do not OWE any balance, and this is full of SHIT!!

(CLICK!)

WELL!  [lghy]
Needless to say, we were ROFL and absolutely thrilled!  She sounded just like Julia!  (duh - jeez, I can't imagine why).
We must have stayed up half the night re-playing the tape over and over and over.  We actually had Julia Hoffman on the phone telling us we were full of shit!

Ah....those were the days.

A little aside:  We also called Addison Powell that night.  He was pretty much the only other person who's number was listed in the phone book and it hadn't been changed.  We didn't do a nutty call - we just talked to him normally for a couple of minutes.  He was SO nice, and SO friendly.  We told him how much we liked him and the show, and he was unbelievably gracious and seemed really happy to talk!  He thanked us for calling and was truly appreciative.

So there you are.   My true confessions.  Maybe I'll have to go incognito from now on.  LOL   8)

DARK SHADOWS: THE LABYRINTH OF SOULS
Outtake #1

Julia Hoffman had been unable to identify the strange substance in Carolyn's blood, even after countless experiments with various tissue samples--including her own blood and tissue from the inside of her cheek.

If only there were a way to make the substance react with any normal matter, perhaps she would have a clue.

Her reverie was interrupted by the jangling sound of the telephone. With a scowl of annoyance, she reached for the receiver; in a hoarse whisper, she said, "Hello?"

"Dr. Hoffman?"

"Yes."

"Try using a sample of Quentin's blood. The reaction could be...interesting."

"Why do you think Quentin's blood would make a difference?"

"Because I watch the show regularly."

"What?! Who is this?"

She detected the faint sound of giggling, and remembered a certain call she had received all those many years ago. "Because he looks so great, you know his blood would absolutely kick ass."

"You're full of shit. Good bye." Julia slammed down the phone and returned to her experiments, praying that she would never be subjected to the deviant mind of the mysterious caller who seemed to still be preying on her nerves, even after so many decades.

At least, she thought, Quentin has not yet been subjected to such harrassment. Now more than ever, he needs a reason to live.
