Title: Happy 213th Anniversary!
Post by: Mysterious Benefactor on January 03, 2009, 04:39:36 AM
I'm surprised that no one has mentioned the 213th anniversary today.  [santa_huh]  I know there are fans here and in general fandom who celebrate the anniversary every year - and you all know who you are.  [santa_wink]

Woo hoo!  Maybe Mrs. Johnson can boil a cake in their honor.

No, no, bad idea.  Barnabas would thank Mrs. Johnson, and Angelique would become wildly jealous.

Given the weather here in Boston, if they were living in northern New England dear Ang would have no problem at all turning Barnabas' blood to ice for that old feelin' in honor of the anniversary.

cheers,

G.

Well, there was:

Something old (the Old House), something new (Collinwood)
Something borrowed (a dress), something blue (Josette)
And a groom who'll regret saying, "I do."

We had a date for the marriage?   And at least the "first time around", didn't it happen in 1795?   A lot of things shifted to 1796 later on in DS, I know...

This episode, I believe, originally aired 1/2/68, so everything that happens from this point on is 1796.  They should have done this when the episodes originally aired, but apparently they didnt realize the mistake of everything happening in 1795 until after the flashback ended.

How was that a mistake?   Why do dates in 1795 or 6 have to line up with broadcast dates in real life 1967 or 8?  In 1967, I think Sara sent Vicki back to a pivotal moment in the past, not just a day that happened to have the same date, only in 1795.

They never mentioned 1796 until they revisited that era later.  Then for some reason, they fooled around with dates.   Bradford's 1795 year of death was crudely scratched off his tombstone and made into 1796.   Why bother?   Then a year or two later they refer to the events as having happened in 1797.  Weird.

I know that eventually there was some nonsense about dates in 1897 and 1969 lining up, but that came late in 1897, and by the way, it may have been the first use by Stokes of the phrase "parallel time", though this wasn't PT.   They never established that for 1795 though.   I think Victoria arrived fairly early in 1795, an early Spring maybe, and left a few months later, maybe in the Fall.

As has been mentioned on the forum before, the dates coincide because in certain eps they make a point of expressly stating so. Unfortunately, the confusion stems from the fact that the opening voiceovers still reference 1795 even after it's been clearly established that events are taking place in 1796. And, sadly, the same thing happens with the 1840/41 voiceovers.  [santa_sad]

The real goofs come when they later reference 1796 events as having taken place in 1797.

Is it in the voiceovers that the coincidence of dates is mentioned in the first place?  Sometimes I fast forward through voiceovers.   In the episodes themselves I've never heard this.

If this is so, it might explain why Sara took her own sweet time in sending Vicki back, while Barnabas was doing all sorts of mayhem.  Maybe she was waiting for the right date.   Of course she had to wait for a seance, too.

If this is so

It's definitely so. And there are several posts on the forum that point out where the months/dates in 1795/96 coincide with their eps' airdates.  [santa_smiley]

I wish I could say Happy Anniversary to my favorite vamp and the witch, but seeing as how their marriage turned out to be such an utter disaster, I can't. Instead they get my sympathies(well, Barnabas does anyway).

Sometimes I fast forward through voiceovers.

One should be careful about doing that because sometimes a voiceover establishes a plot point or points that aren't otherwise clearly defined in the storylines.

Wait a minute, wasn't it written in the Collins Family History that Josette died in the Winter of the same year of 1795/6/7? If that's so, then the dates of the past and the present could never have coincided. [easter_undecided]

Josette discovered that detail in the family history in an ep that originally aired in early January.  It should have read 1796 since, as far as the audience was concerned, the year had recently changed to 1968.  But as MB said, the year in the past wasn't stated consistently in that storyline.

Wait...did Sarah send Victoria back??  I never really got that from the original [ghost_nowink], only from the 1991 version! I guess I must have missed that.  Not to change the subject sorry.

Taeylor, it's what I believe happened, since Sarah, above anyone else, certainly had the motivation to send her back.  But yes, more discussion about it is best left to a new topic.   [ghost_wink]

Sara send Victoria back?  I thought that was part of the entire seance thing?  You know[spoiler]the real governess is replaced by Victoria[/spoiler]  Oh well I guess I'm missing something here.  In any case, 213 years of marriage!  People actually recognize that?  It was a marriage made in hell for BC to put it bluntly. [spoiler]BC is depressed, Naomi appears happy but you know she is really not happy with his choice, and Joshua didn't even show up.  There was a small celebration if i remember (and I should since I saw the episode last week) several glasses of bloody champagne for a bloody marriage!![/spoiler]
Speaking of bloody, through one of my JF yahoo groups, I came across this interview of Sam Hall.  Its quite disturbing I think.  The link is www.tvparty.com
