Title: Did David Henesy leave??
Post by: Taeylor Collins on September 05, 2008, 01:44:06 PM
Well I have combed all threads and cannot seem to come up with anything.  I always noticed he was absent in the final months of the show and the last of 1840 and not in 1841 PT.  I thought there wasn't any story for him but seems like I heard someone say he left the show.  Wonder if they planned on recasting him if he indeed did leave!!! Could anyone shed some light on this.  You know for a kid who said he didn't enjoy acting he was HELLA good at it!!

I have been watching the begnnings and he has played David wonderfully.  I thought the '91 David was freaky.
GOOD LORD.  This David is scarier than any ghost, goblin or ghoul I ever watched on DS.  C R A Z Y!   [ghost_wacko]
I wanted to post this and didn't realize it was too big.  I have been taking lots of screencaps I would like to share.  I hope it's okay to post it and doublepost.  I just love the way the shot is set with the actors all falling behind one another.

Henesy did leave~~it was his choice.
That's why the Tad/Carrie mysteries were never resolved.

I wish they had recast~~Tad was a different character from David~~so that 1840 would have made a bit more sense!

If the show returned to the present time, they most likely would have had to recast David.

Maybe they could've had one of the Brady Bunch boys recast in the part (like the middle one, Peter [William Christopher, isn't it?] - well, why not? - he was about the same age and, besides, they cast Denise Nickerson to play one of his dates, so what's good for the goose is good for the gander).  While they were at it, since Clarice Blackburn had pretty much left DS, they could've asked Ann B. Davis (Alice) to reprise Mrs. Johnson.  Now, wouldn't that've been interesting?

I seem to recall Henesy's mother saying at the 2002 Festival that the reason David left the show was because he wanted to live with his father (in California?) and attend a regular high school.

had the series lasted into 1971 and beyond i wonder if they would have recast david or if perhaps the character had played itself out?

throughout 1970 they really struggled to keep the pubescent david a "child" with a nanny and a playroom and a dollhouse.

with kathryn leigh scott gone there would not have been that "gothic governess" angle any more either.i doubt they would have replaced that role.

at any rate at some point they would have had to address the fact that david was a teenager, not a child, and write for the character as such.perhaps they would have pulled that classic soap opera move of having him go "away to school" and then having the character return with a much older actor in the role.that opens up the storyline possibilities with the character a young adult.

kids i remember being born on the "young and the restless" are now older than i am.

Actually, it's my understanding that had DS continued beyond 1841PT, a new present-day Kate Jackson character was next in line for Collinwood's governess. Though whether or not she would have tutored David, Hallie, a new character or characters, or some combination thereof is anyone's guess...

There were so many unexplored  branches of the Collins family tree--one could always have found some kid from a Collins family in New York or some such (especially after that history-changing foray in 1840).

Or Roger could have married again.  He or Liz or even Carolyn might have adopted some child.  So might have Barnabas, for that matter (a reincarnation of Sarah?).

It was also possible, even likely, Quentin might have sired a son or daughter.  In fact, he could easily have a grandchild.
I refer you to the excellent fan fiction of Charles Delaware Troll for more on Sarah..... Just Google Charles Delaware Troll if you are interested.  He has written a fascinating "final year" of the series that introduces some new characters, some old favorites, and ties all the various hanging plot threads up in a wonderfully neat package...
[ghost_grin]
Well, the Jennings boys are descendants of Quentin's through one of his children with Jenny, hence Chris' curse.  I don't know if the writers in the show ever had present day Quentin confront the fact that his curse passed on to Chris Jennings.  And I have not seen enough of 1897 yet to know if he is aware his curse will be inherited.  If so, I imagine he would be going to great lengths NOT to sire any progeny.  OTOH, I can just imagine immortal, irresponsible randy bad boy Quentin, leaving a trail of unwed mothers wherever he goes over the decades, all children that grow up to discover a startling change one full moon night ...  [ghost_shocked]
I believe that Quentin's daugher survived infanthood and is the grandmother to the Jenning's boys.

mysterious...

as soon as i had posted this i remembered daphne.if she had stayed on as governess into 1971 and beyond i definitely think a new child or children would have had to be introduced at collinwood.david and hallie were already pushing it in 1970 and a year or so later it would have been preposterous.

kathy cody(as carrie)even acknowledges this during the 1840 storyline.

Instead of taking up more space with a new thread I wanted to ask what MYSTERIOUS knew about Dan possibly turning DS over to someone else.  I think it is reported in Grayson's Biography that ABC and he had thought about turning the show over to other producers.  Was this all talked about before the final "Nail' was hammered in the coffin?  Do you think ABC may have let the show continue if new blood were brought in to try and bring up the ratings.  Anyone know anything about this??  :) Thanks in advance!

Well, for all intents and purposes Lela Swift was running the show by the end. So, if DC had officially left, I could easily see where Lela would have been put in charge. And if that had happened, who knows what new directions DS might have gone? But, of course, we'll never know...

The ratings were going up during 1841PT. But the final nail in DS' coffin had little to do with the show's ratings. It was basically a case that practically everyone concerned (except for the audience) was ready to move on.

ABC did eventually buy One Life to Live & General Hospital (they were independently owned originally like DS).
Not sure if All My Children was owned by ABC originally or not.  They could have bought DS from Dan Curtis if they really wanted to.

A new producer may have slowly phased out the supernatural or had it recur only every so often.

EVERYONE was ready?  Hmmm.......I didn't know that ABC had to buy GH & OLTL.  I didn't really know how all that worked.  Thanks for the insight!!

Phasing out the supernatural sounds preposterous at first.   Then I remembered how different 1841 PT had seemed to me last time I saw it, different from all the rest of DS.   I realized that I'd been so disappointed with it, not because it was bad, but because it was different, not what I generally go for.

There weren't intertwining supernatural events going on day after day, week after week.   Two long term stories were going on, one not supernatural at all, the Wuthering Heights story, and the room and the lottery, which didn't even come up for long stretches.

I noticed a basic feel I couldn't put my finger on, that made 1841PT seem not like DS but more like a new show, despite the same sets, same actors, and same music.  The music in particular seemed wrong.  The sombre cello music would be playing behind unscary scenes.   It seemed obselete for the new program.

I can easily see a more "modern" yet "period" soap opera developing out of the ashes of DS, with more sexuality, about relationships, perhaps even without the supernatural, a sort of Wuthering Heights with some modern sensibilities thrown in.   I could see the Robert Cobert music being replaced, and maybe the writers.  More nuanced acting, maybe.  If enough actors stayed on to make the transition I can see new actors of a different kind brought in for the new format.

1841PT really did give me the impression of the first storyline of DS mark two, the Lela Swift years I suppose.  It would be a good program, because now I must admit 1841PT was good, but probably not one I would watch, certainly not at age 13!

In my opinion it would have been great if they had mixed normal soapy elements with the supernatural too.  I think the pefect examples of this is the early ghost stories and the phoenix storyline!

Did Henesy retired from acting after he left DS? I do know that he made a cameo appearance
in one episode of "The Waltons".

I think I have vague memories of seeing him as a young adult on other programs.  Then I heard here that he 'retired' to Australia, right?

Dear Fans, David Henesy contributed a memoir about his DS days in one of KLS' more recent books.  I think it was Dark Shadows Memories but it may have been the updated version of Dark Shadows Almanac.

If I remember correctly, the memoir was done as a conversation between Henesy and his once-upon-a-time co-star, Denise Nickerson.

Well that is another good reason to get the new version.  I haven't read anything with DH besides the stuff from 16 magazine and all those teen mags back in the day!

The Henesy piece is indeed in DS Memories, which came out for DS' 35th anniversary. However, it's KLS who interviews him via e-mail - though KLS also contacted Denise Nickerson to add her own recollections to some of Henesy's stories.

I too have read that DH owns a restaurant in South America..If I remember correctly, someone posted something on the web of having stayed at a resort somewhere in the Caribbean that was being managed by DH. It might have been a rumor.  I saw a picture of him taken at an airport.  Someone commented that he reminded them of David Bonaduce.  He was with a very attractive dark haired women as I recall.  Its incredible to believe that our young David is going to be 52 yrs old!  [ghost_shocked] I would love to see his character involved in any new DS endeavor.

I had always thought that Kate Jackson would've played a modern day character, almost certainly another governess, if the story had returned to 1971. I'm sure she would've been a Harridge, some sort of great-niece to Daphne, although it would have been nice of she'd been a great-whatever- granddaughter of Daphne and Quentin.
If David had been recast it really was past time to start treating him like a teenager.

I thought the kid was fed up with the crummy storylines and hi-tailed it out of Dodge. I know I would have. Mr. Henesy started out as the main Damien Omen character, thus had a lofty part and mega dialogue. "When the moon rises...when the sun comes over the mountains...when the...oh, to heck with it."
I think David Collins was at his wickedest when he
tried to kill his old man by removing the bleeder valve from the breaking system. And how about the time he locked Miss Winters up? And how about the crystal ball business when he declared all his relatives were about to die? What a kid.
After playing such a mean spirited child, and then reduced to a mediocre ghost watcher, I'm sure DH's mama had no qualms about pulling the kid out of his contract, if indeed he had one.

In Kate Jackson they finally found the good Alexandra Moltke replacement they had needed for so long, but too late to do them any good.   She could have been a great Victoria Winters two years earlier.

I have nothing against Kate Jackson and wouldn't have minded seeing her as a new governess.

Didn't Henesy basically say that he just didn't enjoy acting anymore? Of course, his characters had pretty much dried up. He was great in the "Evil David" eps, but then David and all his various incarnations throughout time were essentially all the same: the kids who were always getting themselves in some sort of predicament and needed someone to save them. There was more variation amongst the Quentins.

I imagine that if DS had continued, Kate Jackson would have become a regular member of the cast, but with Henesy's departure there no longer would've been a need for a governess (unless they decided to continue with Kathy Cody living at Collinwood and somehow decide that a mid-teens girl needed one, instead of having her attend the local high school).  Kate Jackson probably would've been given some other peripheral character who had some dealings with the Collins family; maybe she'd play the wife of a rookie cop in Collinsport.

Now, unless they recasted the role of David, what would have been interesting is seeing how they explained his sudden departure.  Maybe Roger finally got his wish and packed him off to a military academy?

OT, I know, but I've always had a soft spot in my heart for Kate Jackson.  I first came to know her in Charlie's Angels and she was easily my favorite.  My mother also really liked Scarecrow and Mrs. King and so my affection for her continued.  I look very much forward to getting to know her DS work more.... OT: I love Kate she is a good actress and rescued CA from the abyss many times however my favorite Angel is Jaclyn! I swear Jaclyn looks amazing!  She has aged wonderfully! *SWOON*  I have a big ole crush on her and Cheryl Ladd and I am gay.  Figure that out!! LOL  I also liked Cheryl much more than Farrah.

I was not even on the earth when this show started but I have always been drawn to classic tv and Aaron Spelling shows!

I think Kate Jackson's work on DS is very much underrated. She infused Daphne with such spunk...she reminded me so much of Alexandra's Vicki the first year of the show. It would have been interesting if Kate had been cast as Vicki. She does remind me more of Alexandra than Betsy Durkin. Or they could have had Daphne be somehow related to Vicki, if only it hadn't been for that stupid twist during the Leviathan story.

I loved watching Kate opposite David Selby and James Storm...she had great chemistry with both (but I wanted Daphne and Quentin together!).

Getting back on topic a bit.  I think it would be awesome to see David H when he hit his twenties.  I imagine he turned into a handsome young man.  Alas 17 years in fandom and the only adult picture I have seen of him is the one on Collinwood.net!

I'm not 100% certain, but ISTR reading of some friction between David and his (stage) mother that has soured his memories of his time on DS.  Last I heard he owned a restaurant in NYC and has put DS far behind him.

I would be happy to be proven wrong, of course!
Title: Re: Did David Henesy leave??

Neslon he is in South America now according to Collinwood.net running a hotel/restaurant as far as I remember. And regardless of his stage mother, I am sure David still has fond memories of his costars and life on the set.  I know it's his decision to stay silent and lead a quiet life. However the original stars are getting up there and he may be the only link we have to the original one day.  If nature takes it's course in a normal way he will be around when the others are gone.  Oh well we can wish.....

When I was watching DS originally, I was two years younger than he was.

I just checked Collinwood.net and it says he is married with three children and works as a Managing Director for a hotel. He set a note to Collinwood.net in 2002 and said he was in Runaway Bay Jamaica!  His kids were 14, 12 and 3 at the time.
