Title: Announcing Watching Project #2: A Love Story Beyond Time
Post by: Mysterious Benefactor on August 19, 2008, 02:56:28 AM
Inspired by this wish from earlier today:

I wish I could find someone (on the boards)...who loved the 1991 series too. ... It would be nice to converse with someone who shares my love for the show.

we're teasing by simply announcing Watching Project #2 - The '91 Series: A Love Story Beyond Time.

Details to follow...*

(* simply because all the details are still being worked out - but we couldn't resist teasing...)

Details are as follows:

Beginning Friday, September 12th and continuing through Friday, December 12th, the forum will conduct Watching Project #2 - the '91 series: A Love Story Beyond Time. Each Friday (with the exception of November 28th, the Friday after Thanksgiving) we will begin discussion of one of the 13 hours of the '91 series. That will require that the pilot be broken up into two parts. The first part will obviously begin at the beginning and it will end with [spoiler]Barnabas announcing to Joshua at the Old House that he's come home.[/spoiler]The second part will begin with [spoiler]Vicki attempting to teach David only to have to deal with what he's hiding in his desk[/spoiler] and it will obviously conclude with the end of the pilot. There will also be two side discussions with regard to the pilot: the differences between the restored pilot on VHS and the originally broadcast version that was shown on NBC and released on DVD, and how certain scenes in the pilot were presented in a different order from how they were chronologically scripted. And there will also be a similar discussion about a scene that was scripted for one ep but was included in a completely different one, as well as at least one scene that was originally shot including a certain character but which was later edited resulting in that character not even appearing in the ep at all. Also, look for other surprises along the way.

There's one major stipulation about this project, however, and we want it completely understood from the outset: we'll be approaching the show completely on its own terms and as if the original series never existed (basically recreating the experience that newer DS fans had in '91 when they came to love DS via their first exposure to it through the '91 series). It will certainly be perfectly fine to criticize the show on its own terms, but no comparing any aspects of it to the original. Any such comments or even hints of such comments will in all likelihood be subject to deletion. There are already plenty of topics on the forum that dissect and discuss the differences between the original and the '91 series - however, this project will exclusively focus on the '91 series as a stand alone version of DS.

So, with all that out of the way, the viewing schedule is as follows:

09/12: Part one of the pilot
09/19: Part two of the pilot
09/26: Ep #2
10/03: Ep #3
10/10: Ep #4
10/17: Ep #5
10/24: Ep #6
10/31: Ep #7 (Halloween - how appropriate  ;))
11/07: Ep #8
11/14: Ep #9
11/21: Ep #10
11/28: (Skipped)
12/05: Ep #11
12/12: Ep #12

Happy viewing and we'll see you on September 12th for the start. (Midnite and I are getting excited already!!  [ghost_grin])

I applaud the intent to discuss the 1991 DS as a stand-alone project.  Comparisons are invariably invidious (even if inevitable for some of us).

cheers, G.  (one of the very few posts I am likely to be making in this thread)

Comparisons are invariably invidious

Some would like to think so, but not always. The '91 series received many excellent reviews - and, yes, even from reviewers who were original fans...
Title: Re: Announcing Watching Project #2: A Love Story Beyond Time
Post by: Gothick on August 19, 2008, 10:44:54 PM
Perhaps I should have said that comparisons, *as a class*, tend towards the invidious.  I was speaking more generally as regards criticism--not specifically stating that 1991 was invariably the loser in a comparison with the 1966 original (even if that IS what I personally think).

I know that having had the pleasure *winces* of seeing the trailer for the remake of The Women (a 1939 classic) yesterday, I can bet dollars to doughnuts that many of the reviewers of the new production will have their nails sharpened with the most lurid "jungle red" (as was said in the original) as they merrily shred the performances of Meg Ryan et al.

I guess I look at both shows as separate entities much like our watching project will be. I don't really look at the 1991 as a remake.  I simply view it as Dark Shadows if it had been produced (for the first time) in 1991.  I am glad that I can enjoy all forms of DS as it makes my DS experience (in general) all the better!! When I first started watching the original show I decided that I would not compare it to my FIRST DS experience and I think that is why I took to it immediately!

I am glad that I can enjoy all forms of DS as it makes my DS experience (in general) all the better!!

I feel the same. And I suppose the idea of a general notion that any sort of comparison of the '91 series to the original is going to come up lacking greatly saddens me because that's not at all the way I feel. In fact, I've often cited places when I believe the '91 series improved on the original - but I won't get into any of that again until this project gets underway. What does gladden me, though, is that, as the years have gone on, it seems as if an increasing amount of original DS fans are coming forth to express their enjoyment of the '91 series in basically the same vein as it took years for the increasing amount of fans who came forth to express their love of NoDS. And I salute both groups.  [salute]

I am so happy you all are skipping Nov. 28 since I will be in Atlanta fulfilling one of the things on my "to do before I die list" and that is seeing The Queen of Pop Her Madgesty: Madonna.  [banana2]  [cheerleader] [headbang] Some of my cousins  may not like her, but there is no denying that the woman puts on one hell of a show. I know this is off topic but I couldn't help but share. Next years goal is to attend the fest for the first time. Oh how I wish Nancy would return to the Festivals. [ghost_sad]

Sorry to get off topic. However have I told you all how excited I am about this project? Why yes, yes I have but not today I haven't, so it's time to celebrate again!! "Holiday celebration come together in every nation" [happy7]

I would be pleased to join the discussion group.  I only saw the first 2 or 3 episodes of the 91' version but I'm willing to give it a try and watch all of them.  I'll keep in mind that I'm not to compare the original to this remake...I'm sure someone will keep me on track if I mess up..I have the VHS videos tucked away and will start searching for them now.Is it possible to get some reminders that the discussion will be starting say a day or two in advance?...I like the 'A Love Story Beyond Time' title.

I unfortunately will not be participating. :\ I'd like to, but the fact that it's a weekly thing would require me to keep the discs for several weeks at a time, and, though I don't hate the revival and would be willing to watch it again sometime, owning it is not on my priority list. Oh, well. I hope that the participants enjoy themselves, though, and I think this WP2 was a good idea.

[ghost_grin] Aha! I have found my tapes and have them all lined up and ready to view.  Thanks Traeylor for welcoming me to this new project!  Um, I see I already made a comparison about Ben Cross, but thankfully it was in a different thread.  [ghost_tongue2] I don't think it's going to be very easy not to compare BC and JF.   [ghost_undecided]

I have a question for the mods.  Will the discussion take place only on Friday's of the week that the video was watched or will the discussion for each episode be ongoing and a new topic for each episode started?  [ghost_blink]

No problem my dear.  We are so excited to have you.  I admit it will even be hard for me to say things like "I think Madame Steele was a worthy Grayson Hall successor" because I truly do.  However I can follow any rules because this is gonna make my year.

I'm definitely in. although I might have to watch the eps on Saturday mornings, since Fridays have been busy for me as of late.

I'm so excited to do this; since I don't have all the original series episodes on VHS or DVD it's been pretty much impossible for me to follow along with the original watching project.

Yay! Let the DS 1991 fest begin!!!  [ghost_grin]

I can't take part, since I have no tapes, but you've all won me over to the idea of this.   This is definitely a great way to experience and discuss the series, by separating it off from anything else.   You're also getting me to think it must be good.

On most message boards I find that the emphasis is on competition, which is automatically inserted into situations where it has no place and where it distorts our perceptions.   There are polls between albums or shows or episodes, where I feel manoevered into saying bad things about episodes or songs I love in order to explain my decision to vote for the other one.   I don't have that competition gene or brain area, or whatever, so I observe it from a distance and see how it screws things up, sometimes.   I don't see that here so much.   Even here though, it's good to lift the discussion out of the old-show-vs-new-show morass by, well, just forbidding that, as MB's done.  Good idea.   It makes a discussion possible that would have been difficult otherwise.

Welcome Cassandra so glad to add another viewer!!   [ghost_grin]  Magnus if I could make ya some tapes I would but you know about copywritten stuff and and all.  I threw out my original VHS tapes from 1991 after I finally got the show on DVD.  They were just about gone anyhow since they were 14 years old.

Post by: Miss_Winthrop on August 27, 2008, 01:24:09 PM
Hi Magnus:  I appreciate your comment about something along the lines of not having a competitive gene...I feel that way too.  And your comment about being manipulated too. I have a good feeling about the discussion of the 1991 series.
Title: Re: Announcing Watching Project #2: A Love Story Beyond Time
Post by: Taeylor Collins on August 28, 2008, 03:45:51 AM
I have a good feeling as well.  I am very satisfied with the rules and very glad there can be no com-parsions.  In the end this is our chance for (those who love it)  to celebrate the 1991 on it's on terms without com parsion.  I mentioned this before but since I was exposed to the 1991 series first I went into watching the original series as if there hadn't been another version to compare it too.  I think that is why I took immediately to it.  IF I were able to watch the '04 pilot I would do the same thing.  And when I watch Depp's Shadows I will do the same thing.

Sorry for getting a bit off topic.  Again I just want to say WELCOME TO EVERYONE for this special event!!

Well I'm certainly feeling the 'love' around here.  My work schedule has me off on Fridays so it's perfect for me.  In addition to the 91 version being up for discussion, it would be nice to have a discussion dedicated solely to NODS.  There is some hostility on the board against either version (mostly against HODS) and people are trying to compare both versions and I think that is impossible to do.

After reading this post, I've decided I'd like to take part in the watching project.  It will be much easier, as someone else said, to follow through the complete run of the limited series than the other watching projects (which I haven't been able to participate in).  In fact, I hopped over to deepdiscountdvd and ordered the DVD set, which should arrive in time for the discussions.  I have watched the VHS version, but that was several years ago (hard to believe ... ).

I'm really looking forward to "talking" again with Victoria Winters and Cassandra Blair, among others, as well as more recent forum members.  I can already tell that this is going to be a high caliber group!  [ghost_azn]

If anyone is contemplating getting the DVD set of the 1991 series, and you have a Target store in your area, you may be able to find it for less than anywhere else.  I just saw it at Target for $19-something, shrink-wrapped as a special with something called "Dark Angel" (which didn't look like it would interest me).  That seems to be a substantial savings over online outlets.  I'm assuming it's the same packaging and quality; it says it's the complete Revival series on 3 disks.

I just saw it at Target for $19-something, shrink-wrapped as a special with something called "Dark Angel" (which didn't look like it would interest me).

I bought that set a few months ago.  DARK ANGEL looked like it might be interesting, but I gave up on it after watching the pilot.  Some eye candy amongst the cast, but Jessica Alba's acting (I use the term very generously) was more than I could stomach.  My copy of DA is now up for swap on SwapaDVD.

Glad this project is going to start.  I just recently finished watching the DVDs, and I'll probably watch them again during the project.  I love the show.

Only a week now until we get started! I'm excited to get a chance to chat with old DS friends like Philippe Cordier (hi, formerly Vlad!) as well as the newer, enthusiastic forum members like Taeylor Collins. And I know Mysterious Benefactor is a big fan of the revival as well, and he always has great knowledge and comments about the show.

It will be a little challenging not to compare to the old series - but it will be fun, I think, to look at the show on its own merits.

My husband and I watched DS 1991 a couple years ago and we really liked the story and most of the actors. Some of the production aspects were troubling (esp. the day for night shots that were apparently not properly remastered for the dvd release). But we were able to overlook those flaws because it was a good production overall.

I have such fond memories of the original airing of the 1991 show. I was just finishing up college and watched Dark Shadows with my roomie and usually a whole crew of friends - there was lots of beer and popcorn. Everyone would be on edge when the show would end on a cliffhanger, and I remember thinking the Barnabas/Victoria-Josette romance was swoony. Did it air on Sunday nights? I seem to remember that, for some reason.

The revival series really sparked my interest in the original show, and well, here I am now - huge fan of both versions. Now if I could just make it to the fest one year.

BTW, out of curiosity, does anyone know if there was ever a fest specifically geared to the 1991 series? Seems like I've heard some of the folks from the revival showed up to original series fests, back in the 90's.

Does the DVD set include Dark Shadows Resurrected?

The 2 hour pilot aired on a Sunday. But with the exception of Eps #1 and #2, which aired on the Monday after the pilot, all the other eps aired on a Friday.

No. But several of the '91 stars attended several Fests in the early '90s.

Sadly, no. That was put out by MPI and the DVD set was put out by Sony. If MPI had only released the DVD set, chances are very good that not only would it have been a much better set, it might have actually included extras like Resurrected. But alas...

This is going to be the final post in this topic. It's going to be locked right after I post this. But fear not because a new topic for this project - one with surprises - will be posted shortly...
