Some fan photos from the signing:

Apparently, the announcement was not made to take photos during the reading/performance segment or else it was ignored. Not having attended, I can't comment.

This is wonderful!  When Selby did his Cambridge session, he had forgotten and left his notes and his glasses behind in the car, so he did everything off-the-cuff.  He was fantastic, and the only thing to be regretted about it was that the Abe-the-Babe picture had been left behind with the notes and the glasses.  Now I finally get to see it, and it's every bit as good as Selby said it was!

I was at the event (which I made part of a historic site based vacation I took in the area), and to the best of my knowledge NO announcement was made about video or still photography.  Given, I arrived about an hour in (thanks to a careless fool involving me in a fenderbender on the way from Gettysburg to the store).  Since I didn't know whether photography would be allowed, I looked to see what was being permitted and took my cue from what I saw  others in the audience doing in full site of those running the event.  When I saw other people shooting -- and no one asked to put the cameras away --  I assumed it was allowed and took pictures as well.  A lot of them... and posted them and links to my vacation shots to my website. (I was camera happy all weekend as I was getting accustomed to a new camera, as well as visiting a number of historic sites) .

Now I feel very awkward in having posted the shots on my website, since I shot them under the impression that it was permitted.  Is it known for a fact that photography wasn't to be permitted, or is this just an assumption based on the fact that the reading is defined as a performance?  This really disturbs me, since I make it a point to run my site properly, and not stray into copyright infringement.

If no announcement was made, then I wouldn't worry about it. That's the responsibility of the bookstore personnel or Selby's publicist to clarify before he begins.

Since I opened this can of worms, I should probably clean it up.  [hall_wink]

Without going into specifics, I had been led to believe by someone in a position to know that Selby was not fond of photographs during the reading/performance segments of his appearances.

I asked for some clarification on this point and received an answer this morning from an absolutely unimpeachable source. Photographs are fine.

Thanks for both your posts MsC -- especially for taking the time and effort to get the straight scoop on the official photo policy and post it here.  [salute]

I'm the first to admit I may well have overreacted, but given I wasn't there before the start of the reading, I couldn't be sure -- to my own satisfaction -- that I hadn't accidentally done something that the audience had been asked not to do.   A lot of people in this fandom wouldn't care one way or the other, but my old fashioned ethics won't let me do that  -- it would be both shabby and disrespectful.

That said, I can now happily refer people to the link in my signature to go to the selby review site and enjoy the pictures.   [crowdhappy]

Snicker -- here's a story you might enjoy Lydia.  When I was shooting pics, I was trying to get a shot of the Abe the babe pic, and missed, getting instead the ad on the back of that page as Selby displayed it to the audience.   Check out the pic attached here to see what was on the BACK of the Abe pic!  [laughing_devil]

After years of lurking I finally registered just so I could see the back of the Abe The Babe picture. So worth it! LOL

Glad to have provided the bait.  Welcome to non lurkerdom  [crowdhappy]

I just got lucky with that one -- then again if you see the ungodly number of pics I took and posted on my site, you'll see the odds were with me.  Of course, I'm greedy enough to grump over missing the shot of the Abe the babe pic.....

LOL! Thanks for posting that pic!

Glad you had a good time at the event, and that sucks about your fender bender.

Sorry for the obnoxiously late reply on this, but between work and health issues, I've had a perfect storm and haven't been on since October.  [embb] [a2a3].  It's been a case of getting home from work with brain like pudding, and going right to sleep. I have this thing about not wanting to read because I'd want to post, and I don't like to post unless I have at least a FEW braincells working. [crazd] [deadg]

Thanks so much for the sympathy on the fender bender --which actually is a dent no bigger than that from a baseball. It was the jerk I hit took most of the damage, and I found out that Maryland has a weird law (FYI for anyone driving through there).  My insurance says its called a boulevard law, and if you're travelling behind someone else and hit them you're at fault no matter what moron maneuver they did.  GRRR good thing I had a squeeky clean driving record.
