This is for all you lucky ones who got to go to Burbank- can you please post any news about this weekend here?  So many of us are dying to know!

If anyone would like to share any of the info from the Depp/DS film presentation, please post it in the "It's official: Dark Shadows returns as a film with Johnny Depp" topic over on Current Talk '08 II. And if there's any sort of interesting news regarding NoDS, please post it in "Is NODS still being restored??", also on that board.  [ghost_smiley]

I can take my laptop next year and send out stories. I was looking through old fest invitations and I saw it say 20th anniversary farewell.  Why did that continue.  Not that I am companing!! :)

Er, wrong thread for that second post.

I'm not attending the Fest either, as I live too far away from New York or California to visit either, as I'm not hopping a plane to gather with fans of any TV show, no matter how much I love it.

No problem, Taeylor - the forum has a split feature which allows us to split specific posts from topics and a merge feature which allows us to merge posts/topics into other topics, so I simply used them to put your post where it belonged. Absolutely no biggie. And you shouldn't even be embarrassed about accidentally posting in the wrong topic because you're not the first and you certainly won't be the last to do it. In fact, Midnite and I have even made the mistake once or twice.  [ghost_embarrassed]  Though we can fix it right away so it doesn't usually get noticed.  [ghost_wink]

I appreciate that Midnite!!  It feels good to know.  I have been on several boards that would delete you over one little infraction.  I guess I am a bit gun shy. Thanks for making me feel  alot more comfortable.   I enjoy the boards so very much they help me more than anyone could possibly know. That may sound odd (but for me) the boards are a great form of escapism, much like Dark Shadows itself. I come hear and forget the problems of everyday life. And to everyone I have met on here so far thanks for making me feel so very welcome as well.   [ghost_wink]

there is no announcement in the program for next years fest. richard halpern was asked that question while we were waiting for the one of the events to start and the response was that no one knows yet. then several cities were shouted out as suggestions.

It never ceases to amaze me that these wonderful actors are willing to go to any length to please us. Kudos to Mr. Frid. Getting up out of that coffin had to be difficult, to say the least, with his bad back and all.

And thank you, Joe, for providing us with a nostalgic hunk of DS. Mucho appreciato.

watch John Karlen release Jonathan Frid from the coffin

Karlen is so cool that it's unfair to the rest of us. That was beautiful, I wish I could have been there to see that. Thank you so much Joe for the video. Was that Frid's "debut" at the fest, or had he already been out and about?

that was Frid's official introduction to the festival. Today(sunday)he gave us a real scare and not the fun kind of scare! while trying to get up from his chair, Jonathan Frid lost his balance and fell down on stage! several festival volunteers came to his rescue and got him back on his feet while the rest of us were in shock! he was ok and proved it to us by going into a tap dancing routine! it was incredible!

I just uploaded another festival highlight onto youtube. this latest clip is DAVID SELBYS entrance to the festival! he enters through the main door not from behind the stage and he enters with incredible energy and as he throws confetti he announces that he is QUENTIN COLLINS and hes running for president! later he and the audience recite a sort of wrap version of THE GETTYSBURG ADDRESS! check it out on my youtube page www.youtube.com/user/jayteevideo

Golly, both the entrances of Jonathan and David sound so fun and memorable!  I can't believe JF got into the coffin once more just to make his fans happy!!! Let's hope he had more leg room in the 2008 mark coffin!

I'd vote for Quentin Collins for president!

"Thees ees the most uncomfortable coffin I've ever beeen een!"-- Landau in "Ed Wood".   I keep thinking of that.

As for D Selby's entrance, retzev, well, at least he was making an effort.   I understand the rap was in reference to Obama's candidacy... I wonder if anyone checked to find out if Obama likes rap.   It was just because he's black I guess, and just to complicate things a little more, he's only half black.

Well he ( Selby) could come in dressed like Little Bo Peep and I'd be thrilled.  I don't mind any of them discussing their interest or political views.  I kind of enjoy seeing the whole person and not just the "actor" part.  It sounds like it was all done in a fun way and that most enjoyed it for what it was.  A grande entrance done in true Collins style.
PS-
So I take it Jim Storm was not there this year?

I feel the same way. One doesn't have to agree with actors' views to still enjoy learning about them. I won't mention names, but there's definitely one DS actress whose political views I couldn't disagree with more, but ti's still interesting to hear them and even challenge her about them.  [ghost_wink]

OK. Two DS actresses who have been very good friends for years are at completely opposite ends of the political spectrum. It's actually quite fascinating that they're as good friends as they are because, according to one, they often argue politics - sometimes heatedly.

How's that?  [ghost_wink]

Oh yes, that clears everything up MB!

It's great to express political views.   It's taking that and making a big spectacle out of it that I don't like.... the thing I'd dislike the most, though, is being subjected to rap, and rap by a white guy, who thinks it's an appropriate thing to do just because the candidate's black.   (He's half black, half white actually.)    His heart's in the right place of course.

On the other hand, it's absolutely no business of mine what he says or how he expresses it.   He should do whatever the hell he wants, no matter what I think.

Those are great videos Joe.  Thanks.  I saw Frid's and Karlen's act which was wonderful.  I didn't see Selby's so this was a treat.

Joe's videos are beautifully produced so what I have to offer is not so much "video" but the audio portion of Karlen's talk on Friday.  It was called "Willie Remembers" and he talked as Willie about getting blood for Barnabas and being bitten.  Three short segments as a flavor to his 45 minute talk.  Here are the links:

If I flew all the way across the country to a DS Fest, I'd want to hear David Selby talking about Dark Shadows, not about who he's supporting for President.

But what he had always been scheduled to speak about was Lincoln's Better Angel and he did so at length.  Obama was mentioned while he discussed hope, a theme in the novel, but since Lincoln is a major character in the story, a good deal more focus was given to the Gettysburg Address than to which candidate the author considers supporting.

The subject of the questions then asked in the Q&A were left up to the audience and most had to do with DS and Selby's other acting roles.

Due to time constraints I can only very briefly tell you what I thought the highlights and lowlights were of this years' Fest:

Jonathan Frid coming to the Fest and showing us his true love for us fans and showing that he can still certainly entertain us with his readings and remembrance of DS. His presence on the stage and at the Fest was beyond magical. God bless him. His signing of autographs for the banquet attendees is so greatly appreciated by me.

Darren Gross' presentation of the restoration of the Night of Dark Shadows. That was great to see one of the never before scene's footage.  I think he deserved a better time slot and more time.

The Collinsport Players skits were so very entertaining as usual.

Frank Borzellieri's presentation on his new book The Physics of Dark Shadows.

The repeat airing of the 2004 WB pilot.

The other actor's sharing their remembrance of DS and showing that they are still thriving with their respective projects.

Some negative things:
The hotel. A good choice but incredibly bad timing as the hotel was undergoing major renovations. I think the construction was way behind schedule.
The sound system. The microphones were not working on many instances. I am sure it was the hotel's fault as the sound system is normally excellent in past Fest years.
The banquet food. Vegetarian lasagna. If you managed to eat it you walked out of the banquet about 10 pounds heavier. lol I think we should stick to the chicken.
The new movie discussion "panel". I expected some additional news on the project. Unfortunately all we were told was that the script was being worked on and that after it is nailed down and approved by the producers and the studio that casting can then begin; that the DS movies on DVD are directly tied to the new DS movie's release.

OK. Two DS actresses who have been very good friends for years are at completely opposite ends of the political spectrum.

At the risk of appearing deliberately obtuse, I must say that your comment piqued my curiousity, MB. You aren't by any chance talking about two actresses who onscreen shared a mistress and servant relationship, are you? And if so, do their political views correspond somewhat to those roles?

I just watched most of the Selby bit on YouTube.

The opening bit where he discussed what positions the DS characters would be appointed to was admittedly funny.

The Obama endorsement was disgusting. Using the Lincoln discussion as a jumping-off point for getting on his soapbox was uncalled for, and I would have thought David Selby would have more dignity than that. There is a time and a place for discussing one's political views, and that was not it. If he had been asked who he was supporting at a Q&A session, that would be fine, but going from discussing the Lincoln project to "VOTE OBAMA!" was ridiculous.

The rapping the Gettysburg address just seemed really strained, especially when he started snapping his fingers.

Thank you so much for posting the David Selby segment on youtube.  I absolutely loved it!  Whether I agree about Obama or not, the fact that he is so passionate about it shows alot about his character.  Not embarrassing at all- I think as one other said, it shows another side of David Selby.  He truly is a remarkable person.  I am glad that he shares so much with his fans.

The Obama endorsement was disgusting. Using the Lincoln discussion as a jumping-off point for getting on his soapbox was uncalled for, and I would have thought David Selby would have more dignity than that.

Less dignified than, say, his entrance?  Just kidding.  ;)

What you don't see on YouTube is that Selby next began the book discussion by painting a picture of the political climate of the era in which he first took on the role of Quentin-- the disillusionment and topsy turviness, the calls for change and unrest of a wartime that were not unlike current times.  His words hit home, I'm sure, for many in the audience.  He also stressed the importance of education then and now.  He performed "Lincoln's Better Angel," btw, as a play ("Lincoln and James") at the '97 Fest; it's a story about racism, the impact of war, mistrust and, eventually, of hope that is told in part through conversations between a proud black Viet Nam vet named Charles and the title President (who served in the Illinois House; Selby also pointed out that Chicago [Obama's home] was Lincoln's favorite city).  I purchased the book on Saturday (one of the last few copies; they apparently sold well) and I imagine that had he not brought up the Presidential campaign on stage, I probably would have made the comparisons between it and the characters' questions on my own, perhaps even wondering how Lincoln and Charles would be affected by current events.  But anyway,  I think it's difficult to capture the sentiment of Selby's talk without having been there to see it, but I will say that the brief references to Obama and segues between his story and modern political issues seemed seamless and quite dignified.

Quote
There is a time and a place for discussing one's political views, and that was not it.

In previous discussions about her books, Diana Millay has revealed that she practices Wicca.  Lara Parker has often talked about returning to school to study writing.  Roger Davis showed festival attendees a video for his real estate development project.  If there's a rule about actors not talking about their personal interests during Festivals, I doubt that many of them know about it.

Eh, "disgusting" was a bit harsh, I admit. And I never said he was disrespecting McCain; but really, how could comparing Obama to a someone like Abraham Lincoln be anything but an outright endorsement? I don't want to discuss the subject any more, though, as I don't want this to turn into a flame war.

Not to go down a tortuous road but uh. .both Obama and Lincoln were in the Illinois legislator for 3+ terms, lawyers advocating progressive ideas, people dismissing them as not ready for national office--ya know stuff like that.  I can see how someone might compare the two.

What he said was, "I have the greatest respect for McCain" but "I will probably vote for Barack Obama."

Was this seriously the entirety of what Selby said about Obama/McCain? If so, I would say this issue got blown out of proportion the slightest bit. To a McCain supporter, "annoying" might be a more appropriate word ... I don't know about "disgusting" ...

There were 3 separate mentions of Obama.  A search of my recent posts for his name ought to bring up each in different places.

In addition to the McCain comment, there was 1 Bill Clinton quote, at least 2 mentions of MLK, and 1 each of Robert Kennedy, Phil Ochs, Janis Joplin, Neil Young, Michael Jordan, Tiger Woods, Anne Sexton and Yvonne DeCarlo.  Several DS actors came up as well as his friend Rafer Johnson, and a lot of Errol Flynn.  [ghost_grin]

It just reminds me of the time years ago when David Selby and another actor performed a play David had written about Lincoln coming to life in the Lincoln Memorial and having a lengthy conversation with a black janirtor in the present day.  I found the play fascinating but it was performed in the main Festival hall and it was difficult to concentrate because so many DS fans with no interest in anything not related to DS or old TV shows were constantly running in and out of the theatre.

Still, I got from it a memory I will always cherish.  And I learned just how deep the amazing David Selby's integrity runs.  Not to mention his reservoirs of patience.

It's interesting how a 3 minute video of a 90 minute talk can be blown out of portion.  It's happened twice now, once with JF and now David's time.  All I can do is view these videos of the DS fest with enjoyment and entertainment but not think of it as the entire time.  I can't believe that the entire 90 minutes of David's time was spend on this one thing, no more than JF talking about Grayson.  OH wouldn't that have been fun!?  I appreciate Midnite's post about what happened and anyone else who might have been there.

Hi, Teresalita

I dressed as Angelique and sang a parody of The Searchers' "Needles and Pins," complete with a Play-Doh voodoo doll and pin cushion. victoriawinters may be putting up a video of her performance ("I Could Have Bled All Night" to the tune of "I Could Have Danced All Night" from My Fair Lady) and mine sometime later this week.

We missed you at the Fest this year too. :(

That little, pink golem was precious.  (Almost as precious as ProfStokes herself).

Cute photo ladies! I know the song Needles and Pins very well by the Searchers. One of my favorites. I believe that Stevie Nicks and Tom Petty have a version of it too. I am sure the performance was awesome as usual! Cute costume too!

the thing I'd dislike the most, though, is being subjected to rap, and rap by a white guy, who thinks it's an appropriate thing to do just because the candidate's black.

I'm sure it's hard to take in bits and pieces of discussion and have them make sense, but Selby's rap had nothing to do with Obama.  The scene was taken from Selby's book, "Lincoln's Better Angel," and was of Lincoln and the book's main character watching the performance of a black choir member who was rapping "The Gettysburg Address."  Selby's point was that words NEED to be SPOKEN, not just read, and the young man in the book was doing just that.

If you're interested in the book, Pansity just posted a review in a separate thread.

I'd go find it now, but my computer would probably crash.

I thought people were particularly hard on David .  I admit I jumped to conclusion's about JF's comments toward GH, however his comments seemed to have been cleared up faster than DS.  I have ask several different sources and I hear the same thing from every source.  JF didn't mean anything bad and neither did DS.  We should all revel in the fact that their AMAZING reputations remain in tack!!
