Title: Observation About Today's Quote Capture
Post by: Mysterious Benefactor on June 28, 2008, 04:16:48 AM
It's amazing that no matter how many times one watches DS, new observations and questions continue to arise. And today's question (which is one that has seemingly evaded me for almost 20 years (since I first saw Ep #1 at the '89 Fest in September of that year)): Who the hell wears a turtleneck at the end of June??!!  [ghost_shocked]  And the answer is: Apparently Vicki does!  [ghost_wink]

We've often joked about the weather in Collinsport and particularly how people run around there wearing wool coats in the middle of summer, but who knew that knowledge of the oddness of Collinsport's summer is as widespread as New York so that Vicki knew enough to wear a turtleneck, whereas most people who would have traveled to other parts of New England would have been wearing as little as possible above their clavicles?!  [ghost_grin]

Perhaps it was a sleeveless turtleneck.  [ghost_wink]

Well, one would have hoped so, Miss_Winthrop!  [ghost_grin]  Though having seen several photos of Alexandra wearing the outfit (without the trench coat), and now putting two and two together, it's not.  [ghost_sad]

She should have gone with just a dickie in such warm weather.

You can get some cold, rainy weather in June.

I notice that the slide show is showing up in the Robservations section.  I hope it continues to appear there!

Well, yeah. And for that reason the trench coat can make sense. But I don't know anyone who wears turtlenecks in late June.  [ghost_wink]  The people I know have packed them away and are well into wearing their summer clothes.

The good news for the people who posted and PM'd me to say they'd miss the History Slideshow is that it hasn't been retired after all. I've moved it to the Robservations board, and anyone who might like to continue to follow it can do so there.  [ghost_smiley]

That hadn't occurred to me before either.  Now that I've experienced a humid New England summer day, I'll take "dry heat" over that any day.  I've always been of the opinion that hot is hot, but when you add 90% humidity, you get ugly.  Ugly is not hot.

That can't all be her hair, can it?

Here's a copy of the capture so that everyone will still be able to understand what's being talked about:

It is true that you don't know me.

I completely missed that.  Bother.  I knew I'd had a bad week, but I didn't know it was this bad.

True. And if it is true that you wear turtlenecks in late June (especially this past June 27th!  [sweat2]), well, then you'd fit right in with the, as the '91 series' Abigail might say, "surpassing strange" residents there.  [wink2]  And who knows, maybe we should all aspire to fit in with them (though I can't say sweating because I'm dressed too warmly is really one of my favorite things to do  [lghy]).

(And speaking of "surpassing strange," if you like turtlenecks in late June, I'd be willing to bet you're going to love one of the "benefits" of menopause.  [b003])

Seeing as how Collinsport's climate was able to support palm trees, she really shouldn't have been wearing that turtleneck.

Yes, I was amused by the new and novel experience of not being cold at work.

I thought of this thread, especially Midnite's comment about the humidity, when I was sweating rivers as I gardened yesterday.  In a T-shirt, by the way.

in a few more nods to collinsport's unseasonably cool summers in episode two we have elizabeth putting out tea for her and vicki as it's "rather cold" and roger, running into vicki on widows hill, suggesting she return to the house so she doesn't "come down with a cold" on her first night.

i think the writers must have been more concerned with establishing a suitably gothic atmosphere than reflecting the real world weather conditions.
