Title: DS Fest Burbank
Post by: Brian on May 15, 2008, 03:59:00 AM
I'm finally thinking about flying from Florida to CA for the fest in July, but I can't find special room rates for the Fest at the Marriott.  I CAN get a great flight on Delta for less than $1000, which is my primary concern, but I'd rather not pay $200 a night for a room.  Are there special rates for the Fest that I don't know about, and a code or other wording to get special rates?  Thanks for any thoughts/info.  Brian

Unfortunately, Brian, the Marriott may already be sold out of discounted Fest rooms because ShadowGram warned a sellout was immanent back in March.  [ghost_sad]  However, SG also provided info for the overflow hotels:

Number 182.   March 2, 2008.

********************************************
Hello, Dark Shadows Fan,

ShadowGram (SG), The Official Newsletter & News Source for Dark Shadows (DS), announces the following breaking news.

...

It is expected that the Marriott soon will sell out of sleeping rooms. These nearby hotels should have rooms available:
Ramada Burbank (www.ramadaburbank.com) 818-843-5955.
Extended Stay America (www.extendedstayamerica.com) 818-567-0952.
Quality Inn Burbank (www.qualityinn.com) 818-848-1680.

You may want to try to contact one of them.  [ghost_smiley]

Did I hear you say you were flying out from Florida? Did you know that Orlando has one of the most active and largest Dark Shadows Fan Clubs in the East Coast???? Check out our website http://www.cfdsfanclub.com/ (http://www.cfdsfanclub.com/)
We have several members attending this year and you may be able to find a roomate.
Our next meeting is June 28.  send me a message if you would like more information.

Hey LdyAnne..nice to hear from you.  I think we met some years ago at a CFL DS meeting.  Anyway, at my age (okay, 51!)--and with all due respect to everyone--I don't do roomates anymore.  Been single and lived alone for too many years to go back to the college thing.  LOL.  But maybe I'll spend the extra bucks and come to the fest anyway.  Still debating.

I hear you, but being in the same age group 50 something myself I sill like the roommate thing. To each his own.
Be sure and say hi to me at the fest

I can see not rooming with total strangers... I am fortunate to have made some trusted friends with whom to share, because in addition to their companionship, things are getting very pricey, and this has helped those of us who couldn't afford the trip otherwise.

That much being said, whether going solo or not, one more  thing to try is to work whatever you have in the way of "miles" credit cards, hotel membership cards (like Marriott and Ramada, which you can sign up for online), AAA membership cards, the better travel websites.  For example, I found it was about $75 cheaper to fly from Providence to LAX and catch the Super shuttle to Burbank, than going directly to the Burbank airport from either Providence or Hartford, my nearest airports.  Also it's cheaper to get either an extremely early or  late  flight, at least on one half of your round trip, preferably with a stop or two on the way.

Also, how willing are you to rent a car or take a taxi from a less expensive hotel to the convention every day?  These are the kinds of things that you'll need to consider.

Hope to meet you there.

You should still be able to get a room at the $129.00 rate by mentioning Dark Shadows.  This particular Marriott doles out blocks of rooms in smaller increments at a time so if you hear "sold out" that doesn't necessarily mean more rooms can't be set aside.  Jim Pierson calls the hotel to get more rooms when he knows people are being told no more.  Of course, eventually there will be no more rooms . .

I agree with you about roommates.  I prefer my own room or share with one other person though occasionally I will have more than one roommate.  Four women and one bathroom has the potential to wind up like the first 20 minutes of Saving Private Ryan It's just plain ugly. [ghost_mad]

LOL...same with four men (which I haven't done in 25 years--share rooms, that is) but worse with only two gay men...we boys--me included--have to have the mirror time in bathroom to get ready.  ;)

Brian, if you don't already have a frequent flier account, make sure you get one before you make your trip.  Delta's is one of the better ones and there are several perks to it.  It won't help you much on your initial trip but it will later on.  A free trip is not to be sneezed at.

The MercuryNews.com Web site recently posted an announcement for the Fest: BARNABAS IS BACK (http://www.mercurynews.com/entertainmentheadlines/ci_9292751?nclick_check=1)
(Scroll down to the third article)

It's nice to see sites other than those devoted to DS/horror promoting the Fest.  [thumb]

That link doesn't work for me, MB, I get an error stating "Firefox can't find the server at secure.www.dsboards.com."

At around 8:30 ET/5:30 PT Midnite mentioned to me that she was having problems too, but everything seems to be fine now.  [ghost_smiley]  However, that error from firefox is very odd because there's no such server as secure.www.dsboards.com.  [hdscrt]  I have no idea where firefox would be getting it from. It certainly has nothing to do with the URL to the MercuryNews.com Web site.  :-\

If you still can't get it, it's also here:  http://www.mercurynews.com/steveyvaska

Once Mr. Yvaska updates the column, look for the archived article under the heading "Yvaska: Kitchens..."

Interesting - Midnite's link brings up a totally different page on their site than my link. It's the same column, but almost everything else about the page is different - including the formatting of the column...

It also appears that if you don't go in via Midnite's or my link, you need to register with the site to read the column...

Spooky!  [ghost_wink]  Thanks for the additional link, Midnite. MB, your link doesn't work for me in IE7, either, just brings up a blank page. [ghost_huh]

Both links are still working for me in firefox (and safari) - but I'm getting "Internet Explorer cannot display the webpage" with my link, too. Spooky, indeed!  [ghost_huh]

But at least one of the links should be working in all browsers...

Does anybody know if we should expect any surprises at the Fest in terms of new merchandise-or are we to lookward to the same boring boxers, tote bags, pens, cheap mugs etc... Perhaps DCP allowed licensing to other vendors or is that asking for too much?. Collector's plates would be nice. Actually a little creativity  and imagination would be nice as well. I know the topic of DS merchandising has been previously discussed here but it would be nice to see new DS collectibles or new creative imaged shirts etc...

Is there a problem with Banquet Tickets?  I just might be able to go.
If it is still on the Website it is still available?

AFAIK there's been no word of a banquet sellout, but once you're sure you can attend (as no refunds are given), I wouldn't recommend waiting to send your payment.

I don't know if this information will help anyone but, due to the fact that I am changing jobs in a couple of weeks, I am going to have to cancel my Burbank Marriott hotel reservation for the fest.  I made it quite awhile back and though I have been madly in search of a new job for quite awhile now, I was still clinging to the hope that I would win PowerBall, become disgustingly wealthy and still be able to use it.  But, the new job came through and it looks like I will have to pry my fingers away from that wishful thinking...though, I must say, that is the only drawback to this very happy, happy joyous occasion!   [sun]

BTW: The reservation was for a room with two beds.  I don't know if it will actually make a difference - that is, if an actual vacancy will put back on the list (so to speak) at the DS fest price but, thought it wouldn't hurt to mention it.  I'm going to cancel it this afternoon before I totally space it and end up having to pay for it. Thanks!  It was a long, long time coming.  I really wanted to make it to a CA based fest and, if the timing had been just a bit better I could have.  Still, I haven't been so elated about something for as long as I can remember!  I hope the fest turns out to be a really great time for everyone though.  I'm looking forward to the photos and reports as usual.

Just for your information. If your flying to the fest I'd act fast. After hearing all the talk on TV about the price of flying I checked to see what my tickets would cost if I bought them today. The price I paid last month was $530.00, today the same ticket cost 1,079.00!!! That's a big jimp. If I had waited I wouldn't be going.

If you look at Jonathan's website, he is sorting some of his old memorbilia both both a silent auction at the Fest and also for things for him to sell on ebay.

I think it is wonderful he is coming, but I hope he varies some of the material he presented last year in Tarrytown, like for the best of Barnabas segment have some of the wonderful scenes he and Lara did together, he I am sure realized what a great screen chemistry they had together.

Also, since one of JF's programs is just after the cast reunion,I do hope Jonathan would be a part of that, if he rests up beforehand he might be able to do it--seeing him onstage with John Karlen again would be wonderful, both for the two "Jo(h)ns and the audience as a whole.

I can't make the Fest but have some friends that will give me some recaps, so I will be disappointed if JF does not come to the cast reunion, and thank goodness this year they are having him personlize the banquet photos before the Fest, so maybe Jonathan will have time to relax and eat during the banquet, one can hope...

I'm curious as to how that will work out. That is, how will the autographed photos be distributed?  Will there be assigned seating at the banquet this year (with the autographed photo acting as a place card)?  Will you receive your photo when you present your receipt for the banquet ticket? Will there be a long line at the exit with the Festival staff passing out the photos as diners leave?

Any ideas?

Your receipt is your ticket. Be sure not to lose it -- that thing is gold! You need it to register on Friday, and you will also need it to get your banquet tickets. Even after you get your banquet tickets, hold on to it. You'll need it yet again at the actual banquet.

Pretty much.  If you have a friend who can save seats for you, you can trade off waiting in line and seat-watching in shifts.  People with limited mobility and special needs generally get to sit in the front rows too.

I wanted to come up with a way for people that post here to know me. I didn't want to just put my screen name on a shirt. I asked about shirts for the forum and never heard anything back the forum owners. So I made a "Borgosi Drive-In" t-shirt. I wanted it to look kinda like a double feature ad from the 60's and early 70's. It was done free hand and I'm no artist, so there you go. If you see me say "Hi!" and maybe we can have a drink or hang out. Oh, it's the picture by my screen name.

Excellent. It would have been a shame if he'd missed Quentin's 40th anniversary year.

Now it only remains to be seen if anyone at the Fest podium will formally acknowledge the milestone...
