Title: New DS Book! The Physics of Dark Shadows
Post by: ProfStokes on May 06, 2008, 09:33:00 PM
New Dark Shadows Book Released!

The Physics of Dark Shadows: Time Travel, ESP, and the Laboratory
***************************

The release of a new and exciting Dark Shadows book has been announced. The Physics of Dark Shadows: Time Travel, ESP, and the Laboratory will be released on May 29th, 2008 and can be ordered today. The Physics of Dark Shadows: Time Travel, ESP, and the Laboratory is authored by Frank Borzellieri, a professor of journalism at St. John's University in New York City and a devoted Dark Shadows fan who has written many news articles over the years about Dark Shadows.

The Foreword to The Physics of Dark Shadows has been written by Kathryn Leigh Scott and the Preface by Amanda Trujillo. Frank Borzellieri will be speaking at the Dark Shadows Festival on Sunday July 20th on the topic of the scientific reality of time travel.

In The Physics of Dark Shadows, Frank Borzellieri reveals for the first time that so many of the bizarre, supposedly supernatural occurrences on Dark Shadows actually have their bases in scientific reality.

The author points out in fascinating detail how time travel in no way defies the laws of physics and is irrefutably proven through Einstein's theories. In fact, not only can time travel actually happen, it already has happened!

All of these concepts, including traveling to the past and future, as well as parallel time, have a scientific foundation and are studied vigorously in the world's leading institutions and scientific journals.

While the time traveling methods of Professor Stokes, Barnabas Collins, and Julia Hoffman may differ from Einstein's wormholes and light speed, the basic notions are very real.

Moreover, the extrasensory perception attributed and utilized by Angelique and other Dark Shadows characters also has a long and distinguished history of respectable scientific study.

Mixing the theories of Einstein, Stephen Hawking, and the world's leading physicists with countless examples from the storylines of Dark Shadows, Frank Borzellieri writes in a manner both scholarly yet enjoyable for the average Dark Shadows fan.

This exciting book will reveal the scientific reality of:

* Time travel to the past and future
* Wormholes and Quentin's staircase
* Precognition
* Clairvoyance
* Telepathy
* Seances
* Possession
* Hauntings

The Physics of Dark Shadows can be ordered at this time directly from the publisher at http://www.culturalstudiespress.com/physics_of_dark_shadows. The book is $9.95 plus $3 shipping. Credit cards and paypal accepted. To order by mail, send the total of $12.95 to Cultural Studies Press, Box 780142, Flushing, New York 11378. Order now and receive a personally autographed copy from the author.

This book was authored by a friend of mine from the Fests!  In it, Frank goes beyond the confines of the series to explore the actual scientific theories that can account for so many of the mysterious, seemingly paranormal occurrences on our favorite show.  For example, he shows how Quentin's staircase could actually transport people through time, why the existence of parallel bands of time can explain so many apparent story paradoxes, and what laboratory evidence suggests that ESP and ghosts actually exist.  Moreover, Frank uses examples and characters from DS to demonstrate aspects of relativity theory.

As a fan of the series and a person who has always had a curiosity about time travel and unexplained phenomena, I found the book to be very informative.  Although I've tried to read physics books in the past, I've often struggled to understand much beyond the introductory chapters; however, the information about relativity theory, wormholes, etc., in this book is presented in a clear, straightforward, and enlightening manner.  Moreover, the details of the experiments substantiating such theories were very eye-opening.

However, I have another reason for being excited about this book: at Frank's invitation, I wrote the Preface for it!   [ghost_grin]  I'm so glad to be able to contribute to a new DS book, especially a book like this that is sure to inform and awaken the reader's intellectual curiosity.  I hope that you will enjoy reading it.

Thanks for the heads up! I'll definitely be getting a copy of this. My parents and I were laughing at the Big Bang Theory last week and the Time Machine episode, I was all too reminded of out Time travel discussions here. This is kind of timely.

Congrats on getting to write the preface!

Wow, this sounds like too much fun!!  I'm a scientist in real life (though a biologist and not a physicist... hopefully not TOO much of a mad scientist  [ghost_wink] ) and really go for this kind of stuff!  Thanks for the info Prof Stokes, and I look forward to your preface!

Hi ProfStokes!

Sounds like a very interesting book. I'll buy a copy. Congratulations to ProfStokes for writing the preface! Your description of the book makes it very enticing. I know nothing about physics but if it's explained for the sake of Dark Shadows fans then that's good enough for me. I'll go check the website. Thanks again for the information.

Congratulations on writing the book's preface, ProfStokes!

A book on these topics seems overdue.  It should enhance our appreciation for the time-travel and paranormal aspects of DS.

I've been meaning to post some brief experts from an article I read concerning parallel universes, which I've managed to track down once again.  But I'll post that elsewhere for discussion.

I think in answer to borgosi's question, ProfStokes announcement said that the author is speaking at the festival, so books will probably be there for sale. Maybe ProfStokes can clarify. The announcement also said orders placed now will be signed by the author. I'm interested in this topic and look forward to the book and Vlad's postings too.

Hi, borgosi

Will it be for sell at the fest?
Yes, there will be copies for sale at the Festival.  Since KLS will be there too, I'm sure you would be able to get her autograph for the Foreward.  I don't know if Frank is planning to sit at a dealer's table and sign, but I would certainly be happy to point him out to you if he's wandering around.

Thank you very much for the well wishes, everybody! :D

Thanks, mscbryk! :)

Although the convention is taking place after the book's release date, I'm not sure if KLS will be bringing any copies with her.  However, I shall get back to you as soon as I can find out.

I want you to sign it as well.
Certainly! I will be very happy to do that. :)

Title: Re: New DS Book! The Physics of Dark Shadows
Post by: frank b on June 04, 2008, 03:22:46 PM
Hello,

My name is Frank and I have joined this forum to promote my book, “The Physics of Dark Shadows,” which is officially released today. I spent this past Saturday signing a ton of books at a New York warehouse. Thank you to those who pre-ordered the book. I understand from the publisher that they will be shipped imminently.

My main purpose for joining this site, in addition to promoting the book, is to answer any questions anyone might have. There are several things I would like to say in anticipation of, and in response to, the most common questions.

First of all, as a huge Dark Shadows fan, I have been told that this is the best forum for fans to gather. I would have liked to have joined sooner, but I have three teaching jobs, plus I’m a student, plus I have contracts for three other books, all of which keeps me away from my computer during the day. I will get back to this site and answer all questions as frequently as I can. I have a good number of personal friends who belong to this site, though I confess I don’t know what creative user names they use. My very close friend Amanda, who goes by “ProfStokes”, did write the preface to the book. Kathryn Leigh Scott, who is not a member, wrote the foreword. I understand Jonathan Frid is now a member here, which automatically makes this the most prestigious forum for fans, I presume.

With the official release of the book, orders are no longer considered “pre-orders” but I will continue to sign books ordered from the publisher until the Dark Shadows Festival. I will be speaking at the Festival on Sunday July 20th at 12 noon and books will be available for sale, too. In addition to me, both Amanda and Kathryn will sign books at the Festival for anyone who would like. If you would like Amanda's signature but are not going to the Festival, I can arrange that, too.

By the way, the best reason to buy this book is for the value of Amanda’s signature, which will be one day worth more than mine and Kathryn’s combined. Amanda’s preface, which gives voice to the fan’s point of view, is truly indispensable.

On the current Festival schedule, my speaking spot is titled somewhat inaccurately. It’s listed as “The World of Parallel Time”, but the real title of my talk should be “The scientific reality of time travel” which does include parallel time. Jim Pierson has told me he will change it for the program. My talk will encompass that which is in the first part of my book – time travel. I will be happy to take questions at the Festival on the other sections about the science of ESP.

I will not at this time go into the details of the book because the promotional summary was posted by Amanda at the beginning of this topic. The website to order is also listed above – culturalstudiespress.com.

I have attended Dark Shadows Festivals every year since 1999 and have many friends that I’ve made through the years. I may very well have more friends from this site than I currently realize. If anyone has attended a Festival, you may have seen me and know me from there.

So what else can an author possibly say about his own book? I guess I’m supposed to say it is indispensable. You cannot live without it. It is a vital addition to your personal collection. And you will be forever lacking in Dark Shadows enrichment without it.

Seriously, I'm a college professor and the book began as a magazine article; researching the physics of time travel is something I also assign my journalism students. To make a long story short, my agent got me a publisher for what became a book and I think the final product is an interesting examination of the physics and science behind many of the strange events on Dark Shadows. It is written in a manner that is understandable for the average fan. So while it’s not really for young children, neither is it an undecipherable science book. It should be both interesting and fun.

In addition to answering your questions on this forum, I’ll post any related links from newspapers that are published in the next few weeks.

Thank you.

Frank Borzellieri

I will be a guest on the radio program "Coast to Coast AM" with George Noory tonight to talk about my new book, "The Physics of Dark Shadows."

"Coast to Coast AM" is the number one radio show for science fiction and the paranormal. It is an international show. I have listed links below which give you the show's website, plus the "where to find" page, where you click on your home state and it tells you on what radio station you can hear the show.

Unfortunately, the show airs very late. I go on at 1am here in New York City. On the west coast, I go on at 10pm. If you must miss the show, I believe there is a way to listen to the show through the site's archives.

I also think, in addition to hearing the show on the radio, you can listen straight through the internet. I'm not an expert on how that all works, so check out the site.

I would also like to thank all of you for the very kind messages you have left me on this site over the past couple of days. I especially want to thank Midnite, who am I told is the owner of this wonderful place.

I also want to thank Diane for your lovely comments. (I did not know your user name was "Adamsgirl" but I recognize your picture. I thought you were my girl; well, it's my loss and Robert Rodan's gain.)

To EmeraldRose and madscntst, I'm very pleased that you received the book already. Miss Rose, thanks for the favorable review already, too!

In answer to Sally Collins' question, anyone who wants both ProfStokes' and my signature, just drop a note through the service email on the publisher's website when you order. I'll be signing more books this weekend and will get them to ProfStokes.

And to the lovely Amanda (ProfStokes), my Preface writer, it's always nice to see you, whether in person or on this site.

Thanks again to all. I will continue to keep you posted on other programs or reviews about the book.

Title: Dark Shadows Physics and Friends
Post by: tripwire on June 07, 2008, 02:43:43 PM
Well, i had to go into work last night (6th day this week).....So i got set up for a long slow night, not busy at all.my coffee, my USA today, and the radio to listen to "Coast to Coast with George Noory". as i do everynight i work.....I had heard the night before that Dark Shadows was going to be a topic for a couple of hours the previous evening, but wasnt sure what night, as the darn am radio tends to fade...Much to my delight, it was last night. The special guest was Frank Borzellieri for 2 hours, the Author of The Physics of Dark Shadows, and i recall the Prof (Amanda) had started  a thread about the book, and i recall she had done the foreward to it, so i thought this would be a really good show..The show turned out to be great! Frank seems to know his DS in great detail, as many on this board do...He talked about the history of the show, the characters, the possibilities of time travel, and perhaps parralel universes...Interesting stuff....OK, the last part of the show was for the listeners to call in...i thought in the back of my mind that maybe someone from this board might give a call, if they were aware that it was airing, and they were still awake...There was one call from a Josette, it seems she had changed her name to Josette because of the show, she said she knew some of the cast members and that she was very sorry that she hadnt been able to see any of them for years, mostly due to financial issues...George Noory promptly tells her if she wants to come to the fest, that all expenses would be taken care of, that coast to coast would foot the bill...she seemed overwhelmed at the wonderful gesture of Georges part...Time was running down, and they would have time for a couple more calls.....The next caller was an Amanda from Carson Ca.......i thought "no way", she said hello to George, and then Frank tells George that this lady is the Amanda that did the forward to his book, along with KLS.....Thankfully the radio was coming in crystal clear....I thought to myself "Hey Hey, this is Professor Stokes" from the DS forums....I had never heard her voice before, but, she was a natural ! If it had been me, i wouild have stumbled, had the radio on too loud and such , but she sounded like she had called a hundred times before....She brought up the topic about who might have been the source for the character of Professor Stokes (who else) and she rattled off a few names if i recall correctly, and asked Frank about it..his reply was something like "you are the expert on this subject... I was thinking "you gettem prof" lol.....So about this time, George Noory was about to take another call from a listener...."And on more thing" Amanda chimes in (earlier in the show, the question was posed if DS or any characters had benn nominated or won an emmy, and Frank correctly stated that there was no emmys for DS or the Actors)....Amanda went to say that the daytime emmys came along after the run of DS was finished. Noory did a "ahhhhhhhh now i see".....or something to that affect.....That pretty much concluded the Profs time on the air, as he has to get to many calls as he can.....But, it was a delight to have heard Amanda on the show i listen to during the week...This young lady has a very bright future, and i was very proud of my little Cuz. [ghost_smiley] I do not write very well, but i think i got across what i was meaning to say (my synopsis writing blows)....BTW, if i am not mistaken, there is transcripts of the show on the coast to coast website....Mr. Borzellieri, i hope your book sells like hotcakes, and i hope it helps to bring new interest to the younger folks about what a great tv show  DS was and is.........trip

I also think, in addition to hearing the show on the radio, you can listen straight through the internet.

The podcast is archived here (http://www.coasttocoastam.com/shows/2008/06/) (for Windows Media or Real Media;a test link is provided for each) but only for subscribers.  For nonsubscribers, there's a link to a brief recap.

Friday's show originally aired on several affiliates across the country and Canada, and even on XM satellite.  Nice!!!

I want to thank everyone who has posted positive comments about my book, "The Physics of Dark Shadows." I'm happy that the books were shipped out so quickly and that so many of you have read it already. I am also grateful for the private emails I've received in this regard. There are several magazine and newspaper articles about the book coming out. I will post those links when they are published, although some of you find the links before I do. I would add that there was overwhelming reaction to my two-hour radio appearance on Coast to Coast AM. Many of you have posted comments here about that, too.

In addition to local appearances on New York media, I have been asked to appear on Coast to Coast AM again. It may actually be in studio during the week of the Festival. The radio studio is only a few minutes from Burbank. I'll keep you all posted on that when I know the exact date. Midnite has provided the link for anyone interested in hearing the last show.

One interesting anecdote form the show was a caller who was such a big Dark Shadows fan that she legally changed her name to "Josette." She remarked that she was now blind and could not afford to go to the Festival, but had done so many years ago. The host George Noory offered to pay for her entire trip and hotel. She almost started crying on the air. I remarked, "See, anything is possible with Dark Shadows!" George asked me to secure her entrance, and Jim Pierson agreed to comp her admission at my request. Jim also told me her original name was Wendy. It seems she is an old-time fan known to some people. Nice story.

So in the final weeks leading up to the Festival, I will continue to keep this site updated. Thank you.

Frank

I agree with what you said about Frank's book (so far) but not with your terible accusation toward me :) By the way, should you be on line while you're supposed to be working??

Interesting that both the book cover and the posting uses a photo of Thayer David as Nero Wolfe. At least I'm pretty sure it's a Nero Wolfe publicity still. Unlike the other photos on the cover of the other actors, it's not from anything DS related.

Thanks so much for posting this link. I was fortunate enough to have seen the time travel presentation on Sunday by Frank, but this is awesome as well.

I had stopped reading this thread back in June and was charmed to see the news about Wendy/Josette K.

Josette was one of the fans who interviewed Grayson Hall in the Spring of '73, an interview which now circulates as a tape recording one of the fans made at the time (I think it was Wendy herself).  The interview starts with Grayson describing how things look in the apartment.  She did that at Wendy's request because being blind, Wendy couldn't see what Grayson had in her home.

There is a photo of Wendy with Grayson and, I think, another fan, from that visit, that I have seen.  I think in one of the photos from another occasion, Wendy somehow or other wound up being mis-identified as Alex Moltke.

I think we're teetering on the edge of Trekism here  [ghost_undecided]

Indeed. I was just watching a biography of Star Trek yesterday where the actors said that alot of the concepts created for the show, such as the communicators, warp drive, etc., which may have been a gifted writer's dream in 1967 have, in fact, become reality. Who knew?
I will definately be buying Frank's book. It sounds keen.

I'd rather hear Grayson describing her living space than answering 'what was it like to work with so-and-so'.  That's a nice approach to an interview, whatever the reason.

As far as Trek, in the early days it was very much based on the kinds of ideas in printed science-fiction, and yes, they thought that at least some of these inventions would happen one day.   They just had little way of knowing which ones.   They put a lot of thought into what future technology might actually be like.   That's one thing that made Trek so special.   Networks just wanted "entertainment"....

I started to buy this the book the other day and went with two DVD of DS. I wanna build my collection.  I have a fear of them going out of print on DVD.  Is the interview the one Bobubas has.  I need to get that soon too.
