Title: Favorite ending to an episode....
Post by: IluvBarnabas on March 17, 2008, 07:01:46 PM
Does anyone have a particular favorite to how a certain episode ends (regardless of how you feel about the storyline itself)?

I have quite a few (and yes there will be SPOILERS ahead):

The looks of horror on the faces of Roger, Carolyn and Vicki when Elizabeth announces she and Jason McGuire are to wed.

When Vicki is hanged at the gallows.

When the 1840 Quentin is about to be beheaded.

When Angelique curses Barnabas and the bat attacks him (albeit it it was a string-on-a-wire bat lol).

When Quentin's body is filled with pain as Magda lays her curse on him.

When Barnabas bricks up Reverend Trask in 1795.

The ghost of Quentin's sinister laughing as he lords over the house after driving the family out of there.

Wasn't it a cliffhanger when Lamar Trask was flung into PT?   He was having an unusual day wasn't he?

How about Jamison's fake hand coming off in Edward's real hand?

"You cannot have it, Mr. Shaw!  It is mine!!  IT IS MINE!!!   HEH HEH HEH HEH!!!"   (then the look on Tim's face...!)

When amnesiac Maggie walks into the Blue Whale while recent captor Barnabas is sitting right there.... and they suddenly leave Kansas too, so to speak!

Barnabas being staked by Charity....

The doxie testing out the I Ching... maybe the only moment where it was actually jarring for me as an adult.   Cliffhanger?   I guess it had to be.

1. Josette's egg for an eye in 1795.

2. Barnabas getting out of his coffin in front of Abigail.

3. Trask getting walled up in 1795.

4. Victoria getting hanged in 1795.

5. Dr. Lang opening the curtain, letting the sun in on Barnabas.

6. Quentin's laughter after driving the family out of the house.

7. Charity staking Barnabas.

more to follow.
these were posted sequentially, not in order of preference.

I have so many, but two that haven't been mentioned yet are:

Ep #290 - Julia confronts Barnabas when he comes to her room with the intent of strangling her.

Ep #690 - After being frightened by Quentin's laughter, a terrified Maggie locks herself it the study while outside the door the possessed David and Amy tell her they have someone they want her to meet.

Samantha going over Widow's hill in 1840
When LIz and Roger deny seeing any resemblance to Vickie in Betty's painting and Carolyn comes in and thinks it is Vickie.

The first thing that comes to mind is Nicholas' satanic giggling as he tells Cassandra, "Look at your hand, my dear!" and she looks in horror at the THING that lives where her hand should be ... the next day's restaging of it was even better than the previous day's cliffhanger.

I laugh when I watch it now, but this scene actually gave both me and my sister nightmares back in 1968.

"I killed Paul Stoddard- and that man was my accomplice!"

"Good evening, Barnabas Collins.  I've been waiting for you for a long time- a very long time."

"Maggie Evans, I annoint thee with the blood of the owl, the Raven & the Bat......."
~~~~~Nicholas Blair
and:
"Prince of Fire, I call upon the Flames that reigned at my beginning"
~~~~~Angelique

those two 1968 scenes inspired Christian groups to come to my school, handing out flyers "warning" us about Dark Shadows!

This marked the first of many run ins I had with Right Wing zealots!

A couple of others:

After the family flees Collinwood, the camera pans from empty room to empty room (with all the lights burning - that electric bill must've been a killer) as the gramaphone plays and at the very end the laughing ghost of Quentin stands triumphantly on the grand staircase landing.

Following the switching of Vicki and Phyllis at the sceance, the camera pans all the way back (which must've been all the way to the far end of the studio) showing the participants standing there in shock, becoming smaller and smaller (until it was ruined by the microphone boom at the very top).

In no particular order:

1. When Petofi summons Garth Blackwood and Aristede is there pleading with him as the sound of the wooden leg and chain are approaching

2. David gets down in the basement of the Old House and the episode ends by Barnabas slamming the coffin shut

No more come to mind right this second  [snow_sad]

The first one that really stood out to me was when Josette jumped/fell from Widows Hill. Barnabas cried out in horror as Angelique's laughter echoed above the crashing surf.

He was having an unusual day wasn't he?

THAT made me LOL. Best description of an event ever.

I'm the only one who mentions this moment, but it just really gets me that first, Lamar is shot and bleeding to death, running away from his assailant... and he accidentally stumbles into another universe that just happened to be in some room he wandered into at random.    Everything around him changes, and he has to deal with being about to die and this unconnected magical reality shift at the same time... what a way to spend your last minute or two!   What the HELL......?!

My favorite ending is Episode 605 where Barnabas enters Nicholas Blair's house to kill Eve and
finds Angelique there waiting on him. Barnabas is shock to see her and she reveals to him that
she is a vampire and bite him.

I also LOVE LOVE LOVE the episode that ends with Quentin's ghost laughing and having free reign over Collinwood. The room-to-room shots showing that the entire house is empty is one of the best sequences ever in DS.

I also liked when Charity staked Barnabas. I thought that was VERY final.

And I'm not sure if an episode ended on this or not, but another favorite scene of mine is when it is revealed that Angelique created a mirror-double for Barnabas in 1897 so that he could be staked by Charity, be dead, then come back and say he was another Barnabas.

"I killed Paul Stoddard- and that man was my accomplice!"

"Good evening, Barnabas Collins.  I've been waiting for you for a long time- a very long time."

i'm with charles on these two endings.they're the stuff of goosebumps.

i also agree with gerard's two choices.the sceance that sends vicki back in time is an all time favorite(despite that pesky boom in the shot)as well as the camera panning through an empty collinwood to quentin's theme.again goosebumps.

i'm also quite fond of the scene with vicki screaming as she and carolyn spot a certain body floating in the water at the bottom of widow's hill.

and of course the episode that ends with josette's ghost running around the columns at the old house...goosebumps!

The last episode was a pretty good one for suspense... I've been wondering what happened next for 37 years!
