You'll have a wonderful time, Annie! Italy is a beautiful place! I've been there several times, and will be back there in September (on a cruise).

Congratulations! What a wonderful present!

Exotic cars and fine leather. La Cosa Nostra. Incomparable food, architecture, literature. History's finest film actors and directors. Sculptors, painters, warriors, theologians and saints. And Rocky Marciano.
Italy is decidedly unimpressive.

Wowie!! How wonderful! [clap]

Congratulations Annie! Sounds like a wonderful trip. [snow_smiley]

Anecdotally, everyone who works on this forum has Italian blood in them. Honestly, it was never meant to be a prerequisite for the jobs, but somehow it's worked out that way nonetheless. [snow_cheesy]
I hope you have an absolutely wonderful time on your trip Annie. Bring back lots of pictures and please share a few with us. [snow_smiley]

Mama Mia!
How wonderful!
But there is a DS connection, Annie:
Horror film director Mario Bava is from Italy:
he was the first director that Barbara Steele (91 Julia)
ever worked with!
I'd LOVE to go to Italy one day, especially Venice.
Check out these shot in Italy films before you go:
Death in Venice (1971)
Blume in Love (1971)
Brideshead Revisited, episode 2 (1982)
Summertime (1955)
all four will give you a delightful look at Venice.
To see the Italian countryside, check out all three Godfather films, which have extended Italian sequences,
Three Coins in the Fountain (1953) will introduce you to Roma.
Bueno Sera Mrs. Campbell (1968) will let you peek inside a small Italian village.
There's also a sweet 2004 film with Diane Lane (forgot the title) that's shot Tuscany.
Enjoy, Annie!
It'll be great!

I was in Italy with my husband this past autumn for our 25th Wedding anniversary. Best trip to Europe of my life. The food is to die for, the architecture is stunning, the landscapes are breathtaking.....and the Italians are gorgeous!!..... [snow_wink]

Please, please, Annie, will you pack me in your suitcase?

Hear! Hear!
Bava's films are stunningly beautiful. Watch'em all.

Another movie to check out:
Franco Zefferelli's lush, romantic take on Romeo & Juliet~~shot on location in the ancient Italian city of Verona.

[snow_bigglass] I know you'll have a wonderful time. I've been twice & will either go again later this year or next year. But I think we're just going to Venice - a week in Venice to soak in that exotic city & sketch & drink wine etc.

Where will you be going in Italy, Annie?
I've almost gotten there twice, but never quite managed to, and have wanted to go ever since studying Renaissance art. Florence has always been my number one choice. The closest I got to Italy was seeing Mount Blanc from a mountain I climbed in the French Alps (I don't remember just where this was any more, although it was maybe a three-hour drive east of Lyon - I'm not sure if we drove all the way to Haute-Savoie or not). Also, one strand in my ancestry was from near Trento, and only a couple of weeks ago, a researcher found the exact town. Unlike the forum administrators, though, this may not mean I have Italian blood (which sounds so exotic in these northern climes ... ). It seems likely that the family in my ancestry spoke Mócheno, or possibly Cimbrian (ancient German dialects), who came from either Switzerland or Austria many centuries earlier.
Let's see, another Zefferelli film with gorgeous Italian landscapes is "Brother Sun, Sister Moon."
Let us know your itinerary!
