Title: *J.A.D.Q.
Post by: Raineypark on May 19, 2002, 09:19:23 PM
I've always thought it was charming that people who aren't registered members on the board, but who visit with us, are referred to as "guests".  It's so welcoming....so homey....so NICE! :)

But I have to admit that charming designation for non-members always seemed a sad contrast to our OWN designation as "Users".  What a pejorative connotation that has....."what a bunch of users"   :P

Now, to my dismay, I see that we're even being identified as "Invisible Users", which has an even LESS charming ring to it.

Couldn't we be called something more in keeping with our actual status?....maybe "Members".....or even better, "Family members"?

Then, if the state of our visibility HAS to be mentioned, we won't sound like hackers or trolls  >:( ?

I know everyone here is family honey :)

I really had to search to see what you meant by invisible.

(Technically, though, since you nor I nor Midnite can actually SEE :o each other, I guess we are TECHNICALLY invisible, n'est pas) :D

I'm glad you're a part of our DS Family

RAINEY PARK

IMHO....but I think I speak for all :)

Thank you Patti.....you're a sweetheart!!  :)

But that's exactly my point!!  We ARE a lot like family.....heck, I'd rather talk to YOU guys than my 15-year-old most days of the week!! [lghy]

I just thought it would be nice (if even possible) to call us something that better reflects how much like a family we can be.....in-jokes, squabbles, teasing, laughter, pranks and all!!

That's a brand spanking new feature that hasn't been announced yet and will be explained soon.

Rainey, I think I prefer the name user to being called a "member". ;)

Seriously, I do hear what you're saying and I'm genuinely touched that you've come to think of the rest of us as family. :D

I had the exact same thought, but wasn't going to post it. So, thank you, Midnite, for saying it for me. ;) ("Invisible Members" conjures up an even worse image! [wink2])

I would have to guess that it was this thread that led to the new designation of "Cousins from England"!

I was wondering, though, when I first entered, it listed 3 Guests, 6 Cousins from England, and under that it listed 1 Spirit.  What on earth is that?!!

Actually, the addition of the new (and as of this moment, unexplained) feature inspired it more than this topic did. :)

What, indeed...

A hint to the answer is located right here in this thread. And the "cousin" who posted it didn't even realize that they'd inadvertently provided a hint so that I don't have to provide one of my own. ;)

Just ask yourselves one question: what does the term "Spirit" conjure up? [ghost]

I am still LMAO over the whole "member" thing. At the local Credit Union in my town they call the customers members and I always laugh hysterically.  It is a standard joke in our house.

Thanks so much for the laughs.

Midnite?.....MB?.....is it the two of you who have entered the "Spirit" realm?  Haven't seen you listed among the "Cousins" lately, have we?
Just wondering.

Rainey,

I hereby disavow any knowledge of anything that doesn't officially exist.

Well, my initial guess was that Midnite and MB would be the "Spirits" - but since MB indicated that someone else left a clue in a post, I'm totally stumped!!

Guests are listed as spirits, right? And those logged in and signed up are listed as Cousins from England?

heheh that's sooo kewl!!! Midnite and MB are geniuses!!!

~~> And Raineypark your 15-yo is just grumpy  ;) hehe  :D

I am so lost in the shadows here. I've gone over and over this thread trying to figure out what "spirit" is supposed to mean or who it is supposed to be but I can't put two and two together.

A member is a cousin.
A lurker is a guest.
A spirit is a ghost.

Could the "spirit" be one of the characters from the original DS who portrayed a ghost? Just guessing but I'm out of ideas.

I just thought of something else based on a previous poster's line of thought:

Could the "invisible member" be a well known person that prefers to remain "invisible" and is therefore a "spirit"?

Well, back to the original discussion, from the various things said, particularly in this thread, evidently the spirits are those who choose to remain "invisible" - while that is a choice on the profile page, I didn't really consider that a hint.  Since there's mostly quite a list of names, I guess it never occurred to me that we had a number of "invisible" members.

At last count, there were 10. ;) But the most interesting thing is that the code is written so that no matter how many are logged in at one time, the board index will only report 1 spirit on the board. I'm not quite sure why they wrote it that way...

And jennifer, I wish you luck with your surgery too. [thumb]
