Title: Jonathan Frid Auctioning Off DS/Barnabas items
Post by: Nancy on July 10, 2007, 02:45:35 PM
Jonathan has put his HODS poster up for auction along with a really big (and I mean big) photo of the fanged Barnabas with his cane.  Also up for auction is his Arsenic and Old Lace poster.  Jonathan will sign the items for the winning bidder.  These are his own items.

What an odd hoDS poster. It almost looks like he cut the photo out and simply saved it. I mean, never mind the tag lines - the name of the movie isn't even on it. But unless he or someone else did indeed cut out the photo, or the rest of the poster is simply folded behind the photo, I'm assuming it's some sort of herald poster to alert people to the movie but not tell them anything about it.  :-   Or perhaps it's not a poster at all but some sort of photo...

Hmm, I don't know, MB, but that's a good question for a prospective bidder to ask.  I remember seeing that poster hanging up in his basement (it's a finished basement) but I don't remember any of the details you are wondering about.   This is the same basement where he keeps his coffin.

I'll ask him about this though as now I'm really curious myself.

Well, if I was Frid, I would have cut off the tag "Barnabas Collins, Vampire,  takes a bride in a bizarre act of unnatural love" just out of hand.  ;)  And if I was going to cut that, I might have cut off everything else as well.  :D  Though the "blood relations" poster, which features that photo, is quite nice, and I would have most definitely kept that one intact.  :)

LOL, I know those commercials for HODS made Frid flip.  Flipping Frid. >:D

those commercials for HODS made Frid flip.

The whole ad campaign is probably but one of the reasons he likened the movie to a porno film.  ;D

I've never seen anything like that hoDS poster either.  I wonder whether it was part of a standee that would have been a lobby display; the other part, which presumably he discarded, would have had the title, slogans, etc. on it.

The monochrome Barnabas poster looks like something that would have been produced by the Philly Gum co. (whatever their actual name was) that produced the gum cards.  That's the picture that you could make by piecing the cards together on your bedroom floor (I did that many a rainy afternoon...).  I think the same poster used to be sold in the back of Famous Monsters of Filmland magazine.

cheers, G.

Oh, and I'm sure I'm not the only fan here who would love to hear the story of just how Jonathan Frid came to have his old Barnabas coffin in his basement...
