I was just wondering what happened to Joe. He was carted off to Wyndecliffe - swifted away - What was the outcome? Did Dr. Hoffman do experiments on him? Did she inject him with LSD for fun and profit? Was Joe subjected to images of werewolves? Poor Joe. Any input?
-
I daresay he escaped, since just about everybody did escape from Windcliff, and ran as far away from Collinsport as he could get. I wonder if he ever met up with Chris Jennings.
-
I don't think that we heard from him again. We all know what happened to Nathan. People go off to Wyndcliff when they don't get killed. I guess that is a nice way of cancelling a charactor.
-
But seriously. What do you think happened to Joe? Perhaps he was rehabilitated. And if he was, did he seek out the love of his life?
I only bring this up because I've been listening to the new radio dramas. Maggie is still working the diner. She apparently had a stint at Wyndecliff. The same old music plays on the Whale juke.
Nothing like a little funk. So what in tarnation happened to Joe???

I heard that Julia and Joe both did a little experimenting with LSD. Rumor has it that on one of their trips Joe was able to get the keys to the main doors at Wyndcliff and escape. He made off with a large sum of money that he stole from Julia and also her car. They say that he changed his name to Geezer Butler in 1970 and started playing bass for Black Sabbath. You can see him this summer if you catch the Heaven and Hell tour.
-
Julia, in a moment of absent-mindedness, gave Joe some of the Barnabas's serum, and he aged to 200 years before her eyes and dropped dead. Julia screamed.
-
I heard that he aged 200 years, changed his name to Keith Richards, and is still playing guitar for the Rolling Stones.
-
Joe came out of the closet, moved in with his boyfriend, and the two honeymooned on a gay cruise in 1982, where they were voted Best Couple!

STOP MAKEING FUN OF KEITH RICHARDS!!!!!

Not alot of Joe Haskell fans out there, eh? Oh, well.

I would figure that once he got sprung from the hoo-hoo hotel, he would move as far away from Collinsport as possible, all the way to the west coast, getting a job with the fishing boats among the isolated Oregon coast. He would still not be "quite right," keeping to himself, being a distant and even hostile person, a total loner, the memories still haunting him. Some pretty little thing, very Maggie-like, would take to him, trying desperately to help him with whatever is wrong, creating a very tense relationship. How's that for a Dark Shadows spin-off?

Joe, well yeah, I'd like to think that eventually had the storyline continued he would have made it out of Windcliff, relatively sane, but darker and disturbed. He had been driven to the point by Angelique, and pushed over by Chris. If he had become a little more educated on the subject of his tormentors, he could have uncovered a lot of secrets at Collinwood, making him an admirable danger to those members of the family with skeletons to hide. That would have been an interesting storyline to pursue.
As for Joe, I'm not like a diehard fan of his, but I thought he was pretty much a likeable character.
-
I'm surprised, David, that you didn't say Joe became a porn star. ;D (Post DS, Joel certainly had the requisite mustache. ;))
I like to think Joe recovered and had a happy life far away from Collinsport. But given that DS is a Gothic soap in which tragedy abounds, that might be too optimistic...

i'm not sure how joe would have fared at wyndcliff.
it seemed to be a pretty ineffectual facility.did anyone ever receive beneficial treatment there?did anyone get "better"?
after the initial set-up during the time that julia was treating maggie there the hospital seems to serve more as a depository for characters leaving the show(either temporarily or permanently)whom the writers don't want to "kill off".
doing summer stock?taking a trip to paris?how about a nice rest at wyndcliff?
willie and elizabeth both seem just as bonkers when they walk out of there as when they walked in.
and for a supposedly "secure" facility it might as well have had a revolving door with the ease with which one could escape.once julia establishes permanent residency at collinwood who the heck runs the place anyways?nurse jackson?
so it's hard to say how joe came out of the experience.as for being a fan of joe the part of the story where he's courting maggie is really sweet.i don't particularly care for what the writers did with the character later on.he was definitely one of the hunkiest actors who ever appeared on the show.

A better question might be did anyone ever receive ANY treatment there? I mean, most of the time the only reason doctors were seen interacting with patients was to get information to support their own theories or to help prevent some disaster. The patients' welfare seemed almost inconsequential to the bigger agenda of the moment. ::)

Dear MB:
Joe never did porn, but he met an ex-porn star, in the town of Monticello.
How shocked the town would have been had they known what their police chief had done!

Not to mention (Joel's character's) wives Nicole and what's her name (I can't even remember the name of his other wife :- )

Joe stayed at Wyndcliffe for treatment which actually went pretty well all things considered. When it was time for him to leave, Dr. Hoffman probably paid him to leave Collinsport and promise to never return. She reasoned with him that this was for his own benefit. He knew he couldn't go back to Collinsport and that he and Maggie would never get back together again. I think he probably blamed himself for everything. He shipped out to sea as a sailor on a cargo tanker registered to Nigeria and sailed off into the sunset.

actually, and seriously, Angelique's death in 1840
might mean that Joe & Maggie never broke
up after all!

Must've been an HMO operation.

Spoilers for Return to Collinwood ....
In the Return to Collinwood cd play ( in 2004) we learn that Joe and Maggie had been married and he had died over a decade ago .
So while it's sad that Joe died at least we know he left Wyndcliffe and did get to marry Maggie . I always had this romantic idea of Maggie and Joe falling in love again while they were both at Wyndcliffe . I also like to think they had children togather , although Return to Collinwood doesn't say anything about that one way or the other , leaving things open so that possibly Joe and Maggie's children could be created to play a role in a possible DS Next Generation .

Count me in as a devoted Joe Haskell fan!! I always liked him and wish they would have given him more interesting things to do.
As for what happened? Well, he didn't really go mad, since IMHO that was not the best of choices the writers could have made, although he did suffer severe anxiety given the things he had endured. After receiving treatment at Windcliff, he returned to Collinsport where he and Maggie got back together, married and lived happily ever after. So there! :) 8)
Is this too optimistic an outlook for Dark Shadows? Maybe so, but I'm all for a bit of happiness for the characters.

OOOO--I LOVE that thought--Dark Shadows: The Next Generation--wouldn't that be a super show? Hope someone thinks of it and tries it out!--I know, I know--just wishful thinking. Still.....

I understand that Joe split for West Coast, where he eventually became a "group sensitivity counselor" at the Esalen Spa in Big Sur in California. [hug] ::)
-
he went to Wall Street and made a ton of money he lived in conn and
summered on the vineyard (married a carolyn look a like)

I liked Sam Hall's notion that Joe and Maggie met up again when Maggie was sent to Windcliff. And that the two resumed their relationship and found happiness together.
If that scenario didn't pan out, the notion of him moving out West and perhaps shacking up with another fella is most attractive.
I wonder whether any of Joel Crothers' later soap opera work has survived. It would be interesting to see the actor in his later work, one of these days.

I don't know about Joel's work on Secret Storm or Somerset, but his work on Edge of Night and Santa Barbara definitely still exists. There have been reports that SB will show up on SoapNet before too long, but I'll believe that when I finally see it because the road to getting SB shown again has been paved with nothing but problems. :(
-
Was Secret Storm the soap on which Marie Wallace appeared as India Delaney? That would be a trip if she and Joel got some scenes together on that. Everything I've ever read about Marie's work as India makes it sound like a dream role for her.

Marie was most definitely incredible as India, but that was on Somerset. And one of my fondest memories of the '89 Fest party at the Red Zone (or any Fest, for that matter) was being able to talk to her one on one for about a half an hour about her time on that show.
Unfortunately Marie and Joel weren't on the show at the same time. But Chris Pennock's stint on the show coincided with the tale end of Marie's run - and it was definitely a hoot and a half to see them on the same show again - but unfortunately their characters rarely (if ever) crossed paths.

she was great as India has that show ever surfaced again?

I'm still holding out for DS: The Nun Generation:

As a Joe and Maggie fan, I always hoped that maybe he and Maggie met up in Windcliff and were able to help each other get over the other one's demons, then they get back together, and both sane they live Windcliff together and go off to start a new life far away from Collinsport.
-
Joe Haskell's untold story would be a great idea for Big Finish. I don't know if they could pull it off without Joel.
-
Wasn't he mentioned in The House of Despair? Didn't he take Susan back upstairs to her room? I thought that was a nice touch, having him out of the hospital and back in town.
