Title: The Way Barnabas Pronounces Certain Words
Post by: pooter on March 15, 2007, 08:48:33 AM
Jonathon Frid speaks in a way Ive not heard much before. Has anyone else noticed? He seems to linger on the "T" sound at the end of a word. And sometimes with the "S" sound too. I think it really adds to his mysterious character and that great voice.

The "English" way of training stage actors results in the way Frid speaks.  The last letter is heard (presumably) distinctly.  A sort of "period" at the end of a sentence.

That is correct.  The same idea is used in singing, you use "English" diction so that your word come through,  My own personal opinion that is why you can't understand some singers or actors.  I think a lot of it come with the intention that you want to be heard.

You have to talk as if you want to get it back to the back of the theatre.

Jonathan was always the best.

Im English and have seen a fair amount of English actors on stage and television, but I do find that Frid's emphasis on those sounds at the end of his words is even more noticeable than other actors I have seen. I think it adds to his character.

I always enjoyed the way Frid spoke, as well as that marvelous voice of his. What an instrument, and how finely he used it. Of course, he still does. At the last festival, we were privileged to see a video of him doing a scene from Shakespeare. It was riveting!
