Title: Who did the best voiceovers?
Post by: Taeylor Collins on March 15, 2007, 05:33:44 AM
Personally...my favorites in order were Grayson Hall...her voice was just awesome.  Nancy Barett, Thayer David, and Joan Bennett!

Oh, Alexandra absolutly. You can't be the orginal! The others were good of course but it was kind of jarring whenever one of the male performers did the voice over..it didn't seem...well natural.

I gotta go with Moltke, but Selby's were pretty good -

My personal favorites are Jonathan and Humbert Allen Astredo.....they both sounded so mysterious and forbidding....I just loved it.

My favorite is Grayson, but I freely admit to being WAY prejudiced here.  I just adore listening to her voice... I could literally imagine her making the New York Telephone Directory a HOOT.  I also love her way of pronouncing certain words--"Collinwood" often comes out sounding like "CALLANwood."

Thayer is another favorite because his voice is so distinctive.  Humbert was very good, as was John Karlen.  Alexandra was excellent, too.

There's a hilarious parody of Louis Edmonds doing a voiceover in the Cheep Productions video, Save Our Cemeteries.  When I first saw it, I initially thought it was Louis, but I think it was actually brilliant fan performer Daryl Schaeffer.

I love Grayson's voice as well.  Have you ever heard the record Disney "Chilling, Thrilling Sounds of a Haunted House," released back in the early 70s?  One side is just the sounds themselves, the other is the sounds along with Grayson's narrating as "you" go though a mysterious house in the neighborhood.

I loved that album!

OOPS.  I just learned I was wrong about that one!  Apologies all!

Naturally, I love the whispery tone Humbert Astredo used in his voice-overs.

No problem. It's not at all surprising that you might have thought the voice on that record was Grayson's because that's yet another instance where something has been repeated so often that it's taken on a life of its own even though it's a misconception.  :(

my vote goes to alexandra.i loved the "my name is victoria winters..." voiceovers.it had the quality of a girl reciting a passage from her diary.

joan and grayson are both great as well.

for some reason i find it discombobulating when an actor(not an actress)reads it.

kathryn leigh scott erroneously stated in one of her books that the only criterion for reciting the voicoever was that one didn't appear in the opening scene.i have recently watched several episodes where alexandra reads the voiceover and then appears in the opening shot.the same thing with grayson.

OT - Thanks!  Normally when something like that happens (I discover an obscure fact or read about a rare performance I remembered from my childhood) I have to go immediately and look it up or watch/listen to it.  In this case, have read it recently somewhere that she was the narrator on that Disney record, I instantly recalled the narration with her voice, not having the record anymore to verify.  The voices must sound remarkably similar and I am sure her being in That Darn Cat, pretty much sealed it in my mind, til I was corrected by (would you believe it) IMDB!

Anyway, as much as I love Grayson's voiceovers - I always found it interesting to hear Humbert or John doing the voiceover because they always sounded very different from their characters and I often had to stop and think about who it was... :)

Fave women first, because they ddn't portray their characters in the VO, and were usually unidentifiable but mysterious:

Lara Parker
Katie Scott
Nancy Barrett
Clarice Blackburn
Grayson Hall

Men:

Always identifiable to me, but I liked:

James Storm
Jerry Lacy
Thayer David

My take on the VO.

It's a toss between Alexandra and Joan. I loved the "My name is Victoria Winters..." start, but also loved Joan's unique and classy voice.

I guess mine would have to be Thayer David.  His voice was so rich and regal.

Sadly, that's but one of too many erroneous statements made in the PomPress books.  [sad3]

As for voiceovers, I think I agree with Gerard that Thayer's were my favorites. The really interesting thing, though, is how different certain actors' voices sounded while doing them - often very different from the characters they were portraying. It was enough to make one wonder at the time if we'd ever heard their real voices on DS.  ;)

And, no, I never really got tired of "My name is Victoria Winters" either.  :)  It somehow made those early voiceovers seem as though we were hearing many of Vicki's deepest thoughts and fears - as though she was writing them in a diary.

I forgot to include Alexandra.  I haven't seen most of the early eps...but hope to obtain them soon.  But I loved Joanna Going's..." My name is Victoria Winters" and if the show would have continued I hope that she always remained doing the voiceover.  I am pretty sure she would have.

It seems to me that whoever did the voice-over for that day's episode had quite of involvement in the story for that day.

My favorites are, not in any particular order: Thayer David, Joan bennet, Humbert Astredo, and Alexandra Moldkey.

What a pity Joel Crothers never did one.  :(

The great Humbert Allen Astredo had the best voice overs. However, he never got the chance to do to many. lolll
I also luv david selby, and chris pennock and jonathen frid. For the ladies, Lara, Kls, Grayson, Alexandra, Nancy, Joan. Thats my take on the best voice overs.

Alexandra was my favorite.  Also liked Thayer David.  The man had a great voice!  Jonathan Frid was decent at voice overs too.

Did David Henesy or Denise Nickerson ever do voiceovers?

I remember the first time I heard the voiceover done by a man- Thayer David in the next to last 1795 episode.  It was strange at the time to hear a male voice as I was so adjusted to hearing a female do the opening.

David Henesy did - but I don't remember Denise Nickerson ever doing one.

I thought the same thing recently when the episode I was watching had a voiceover by Kay Frye, the original Pansy Faye. Not a cockney syllable could be heard.

according to the d.s. almanac(and boy is my copy getting dogeared)david henesy spoke the voiceover 3 times.denise nickerson never did(perhaps her voice was too childlike to achieve the proper sense of menace).

joel crothers actually did read it once(which i can't recall).
jonathan frid read it only 12 times!

honorable mention goes to...

nancy barrett-116
joan bennett-74
thayer david-45
grayson hall-156
lara parker-66
kathryn leigh scott-75
david selby-46

alexandra moltke tops out at 387 readings.

Well, the DS Program Guide lists his name in the Voiceover column for ep #661, but it's Grayson's voice, no doubt about it.

As we've sadly had to mention too many times to count, never completely trust the DS Almanac - or any other PomPress book, for that matter.  ::)  Yes, the majority of the info is accurate, but much too much of it isn't.  :(

Grayson was my all-time favorite. Her voice belonged in this venue and one seemed to feel something quite horrible was about to happen. I thought Jim Storm was also good. He was outside his Gerard character in his voiceovers. ------and yes, I did get bored with the Victoria Winters thing. 8)

Bias here--Grayson. .she had a very effective way of enunciating and putting mystery into what she said...

No!  I liked it.  At first when they started using other people, I didn't like that.  It didn't seem right.  This was Victoria's story.  After a while I came to appreciate the others.  But in the beginning it seemed that this was like Victoria's diary.  It only seemed right for her to start like that every day.
