Title: What other shows were we watching before and after Dark Shadows
Post by: Elmont on February 13, 2007, 12:56:18 AM
I can remember watching the Dating Game before Dark Shadows came on.  I also remember seeing the first episode of One Life to Live while waiting for Dark Shadows to air.  Felix the Cat might have been on after Dark Shadows at some point.   Anyone else have a show they remember ?

I remember General Hospital in the summer. During the school year I would get home just in time. Had channel set and chair set up.  ;D Just have to run in and turni it on. I was one of the latch key kids.

Before DS, I remember loving Adventures of Superman & The Munsters.
Still love Supes!

After DS, I developed a taste for quirky soaps.
I watched, and loved,  Edge of Night for years, which patterned itself after Hitchcock films, and Passions, the DS/Bewitched hybrid.

Before DS I was watching The Green Hornet, Zorro and I believe Batman, whenever that was on.  When DS went off the air I watched Password and Mike Douglas.  I dislike soap operas in general so I never got involved with another one after DS.  My next favorite show after DS went off the air was probably Password and then All in the Family.

I recall The Mike Douglas Show. I think that came on after DS. Then The Monkees. That was after supper.

This is a good question and one I have wondered about. Here's the situation.

Before I began to watch DS my brother Bobby was watching it but since I liked to watch Bozo at the same time we had to split days. He got to watch DS on Monday, Wednesday and Friday and I watched Bozo on Tuesday and Thursday. Eventually he hooked some of his friends on DS so he would go to their houses on the days I watched Bozo so that he wouldn't miss it on those days. We only had one black and white TV. Now Bozo was a one hour show from 4-5 and DS was on from 4:00-4:30. My question is what was on from 4:30-5:00? Because the simple solution would have been that my brother watch DS from 4-4:30 and me watch the second half of Bozo from 4:30-5, but that is not what happened. He must have been watching something else on his DS days from 4:30-5:00. But what? I can't for the life of me remember.

Eventually however I grew up a bit, lost interest in Bozo and started watching DS with him and my mom. He was happy then, no more having to go to his friends' houses.

Ah, yes, I loved The Monkees.

Forgot about that.

My question is what was on from 4:30-5:00?

There was nothing on ABC at that time - it was for local stations to run their own programming/syndicated shows.

I remember the ABC movie came on after DS. My guess is from 4:30 - 6p because the evening news came on afterward. There were also those ABC after school specials. General Hospital & One Life To Live came on before DS. Our TV broadcast came out of NYC. But then again I do remember games shows being on so I could be wrong. We had split sessions at school - I went from noon to 4:20 (or there abouts). Luckily I lived across the street so I could catch a bit of the show. Either DS started coming on at 4:30p at some point or I am remembering complete 4pm episodes because of summer viewing. If I've got it screwed up, well, maybe it will help jar someone elses memory. By the way, these memories are from the Petofi period which I guess is '69?

I used to put blankets over the living room windows so I could watch it in complete darkness, lol. My family still brings that up to this day.

Well, the ABC Afterschool Specials didn't start until the fall of '72.  ;)

I know I've mentioned this before, but two shows that immediately come to mine were "Art Linkletter's House Party," and "The Galloping Gourmet."  The reason why I remember them is that they came on opposite DS (Gourmet eventually replaced Art), and my mother wanted to watch those, so a battle ensued and I won.  After all, she got to watch "The Lawrence Welk Show" on Saturday nights (he was the only man virtuous housewives, who modelled themselves after Donna Reed, could have lustful thoughts about) and we had to endure that.

In the Fall of '69 I watched Strange Paradise on Channel 5.  I think it aired right after DS.

Me too! I loved "Where the Action Is." Here in New York, it came on at 4:30, right after DS. I didn't watch anything before DS, though. The rule was, homework, then TV -- LOL! It's a good thing I was quick about it!

FORGOT about the Monkees?! The horror! The travesty! <- said by the raving, drooling Monkees fan. Mike Nesmith is a genius.

Around 1969, "One Life To Live" came on (on the West Coast) before DS. DS ran from 4-4:30pm. Then came either "Let's Make A Deal" and/or "The Dating Game," or the local news. Of course, once DS was over for the day, the neighborhood kids would run out into the streets and "play" Dark Shadows. We'd recreate the scenes we'd just watched, and of course, the boys wanted to play Barnabas or Quentin.

When it was syndicated in the 70's, DS came on at 11:30pm, right after "Mary Hartman! Mary Hartman!"  They started with the intro to Barnabas episodes, and it ran a solid year. Then in the early 80's, a local station put it on at 3:30pm, but switched it to midnight (featuring the Dream Curse/Adam/Quentin/Chris Jennings stories), right after the 10 o'clock movie. If the movie ran over 2 hours, and DS was pushed back to 12:30a.m. or 1 a.m., viewers were bummed, but patient.

Whaaat? No one was watching Doctor Who around that time? Or was it not on near the run of Dark Shadows...? Sorry, I'm a new DH fan and just couldn't help myself.  ;D

Btw, my little brother and I used to watch The Monkees on Nickelodeon when we were kids. He was obsessed with their music and got me into it, too. ;) ~DJ
