Title: Out of curiosity
Post by: Brandon Collins on February 09, 2007, 06:39:52 AM
It's been mentioned in a number of other threads that we who love DS tend to spend a lot of time 'round these parts. So, this got me curious--just how MUCH time has everyone spent here? We can tell how many posts one another has because it's displayed, but the time you've been here is only displayed to the individual person when they're logged in. So, if you're willing, post your time here.

I have 3 days, 2 hours and 12 minutes.

I've spent over 3 days of my life here?!!!!

And, do you specifically set aside time each day to log on, or do you just do it when you think about it?

Personally, I log on after my classes are over on campus, and then again late at night when I get home from work.

The top 20 people are listed on the stats page - though I could easily make the list longer.  ;)

However, as I alluded to earlier in another topic, don't let anyone say that we spend a lot of time here. Compared to other forums (and in particular the SMF developers' own forum) members spend hardly any of their time here. I mean, the 10th place member on the SMF forum has already spent 102d 17h 21m there, whereas our 10th place member has only spent 25d 44m here. And as I also pointed out, the SMF forum hasn't even been active for half as long as this one has...

3d 2h 12m - that's a mere blink of your eyes!  :D

And a link to general stats (totals for time, posts, topics, polls, and votes) is visible at the bottom of every cousin's profile.

Interesting information MB and Midnite.

I have 8 d, 12 hrs, 20 mins. as of right now.  But I am guilty of walking away from the computer while I still have the DS forum window open.  One has to wait 120sec between each post so time adds up. ;)

Actually, once someone has been inactive for 15 minutes, the system stops counting (and if one leaves to go to another site or one logs out, it stops counting immediately).  ;)  And while reading posts, one would be surprised how quickly 120 seconds passes. And it can pass even quicker while one composes a fairly decent sized post and previews it before posting. As I said the other day, the Preview feature is our friend.  :D

I just looked at my stats, and I'm only an-hour-and-a-half away from thirteen days!  And I did it all in on, fell swoop!  'Course, it took a lotta coffee.

As of this time, I have 7 days, 1 hour and 32 minutes. But you know what I wouldn't trade that "week" for anything as I have so much fun here on the forum. I am so glad I discovered it just a few months ago. [wink2]

So far 3 days 18 hours 53 minutes and it's all within the past month! I've been signed up here for a few years but only in the last month been posting here.

But I also will leave the window to the forum open while I do other things, and as for that 120 second rule, I'll just go back to my inbox and check emails, reply, etc while waiting for the two minutes to pass. Other times I get up to use the bathroom or something and leave the window open. So I think this time doesn't reflect the actual time spent reading and posting, but the amount of time the window is open.

I know that one could argue that the amount of time spent here is wasted, but we're enjoying ourselves and that's never a real waste of time is it? Think of the time we send on other activities we don't enjoy half so much!

The time that we spend here is definitely NOT wasted. No way. I didn't mean to suggest that it was, if anyone got that impression. I was just surprised that I have 3 days already, because I don't really look up and see it that often. The funny thing to me is that it's taken since last August to get up to that point, whereas Alondra has been active for a month and has already surpassed me. lol. Got my motor running--I gotta catch up!

And hey, I'd rather sit here and post than do homework or go to ACTUAL work anyday!

Yes, the system might add an erroneous 15 minutes here and there. But when one is speaking in terms of entire days, 15 minutes is a mere drop in the bucket. Members' time spent online stats are a pretty accurate reflection of the actual time they've spent here.  ;)

Yes, the system might add an erroneous 15 minutes here and there.

Oops - apparently I misspoke. When we were still using YaBB SE, the system did indeed occasionally add those 15 minutes. However, I just read where SMF does not. And sure enough, I checked things out for myself after 17 minutes of inactivity and my time spent online stats had not changed since the last time I'd actually done something on the forum. That means the stat is more accurate than ever - and it has been since May 31, 2004. So, if anyone became a member after that date or they didn't become active until after that date, then their stat is a completely accurate reflection of their active time spent here.  :)

The only thing that still remains for 15 minutes after a period of inactivity is a member's name on the "Cousins active in the past 15 minutes" list.

Since I joined this board several years ago, my stats say 4 days, 9 hours and 46 minutes.  I do on occasion leave the board open on the computer sometimes deliberately, sometimes not.

I read and post when the spirit moves me or I have a reason to post.  I enjoy reading the board.

OMG - 13 days, 1 hour and 2 minutes...where DOES the time go?  That doesn't count all the time I spent in the older incarnations of the board...I've been addicted for years now.  But, hey, I could be doing much worse than hanging out here.   ;)

I usually stop by when I have a chance during the week when whatever I'm doing at work allows.  I love the variety of topics and personalities here.  It's also a great place to keep up on what's going on with fests, etc.

Ah, but you're a special case (in more ways than one ;) - BUT) because you deleted your original registration and then began posting with a different account. All your initial posting history and time spent online was wiped out. That second account didn't become active until December 28, 2004, so those 4d 9h 46m have accumulated over a bit more than the last 2 years and 2 months.  [wink2]  In that time you've made 528 posts, but you had 490 posts made over a 2 year and 10 month period before you deleted your original registration - and those are now attributed to "guest" Nancy.

Slightly OT but...

I love your avatar pic, CastleBee. Reminds me of the time one of my cats decided to rub against a candle and catch his tail on fire, then run up and down the hall to get away from it.....Ah good times.

For the record, I have 1 day, 13 hours, and 49 mins. :) I didn't even know that! lol. I spend time in other forums, but I also have school, baby, hubby, et al to deal with. Compared to some other forums I've been to, this one has a pretty relaxed pace. It actually
has picked up quite a bit since I first joined (what was that? a year ago?). When I first joined, I'd find myself asking a question that
wouldn't get answered for maybe a couple of days or so... Now that there are more active members on this forum, some of the
questions/responses might get answered in the bilnk of an eye. This forum really has grown nicely, methinks. ~DJ

How do you get the curses and cures??

I'm sure one of the moderators will answer this better for you, when they see the question, there is probably something in the 1-2-3 testing section about it. You could use the search feature as well and type in karma or curses, cures and that would help.

The way it has been explained to me is that curses are good and cures are bad. If you like someone's post you click on the link underneath the number of curses or cures someone has. You can give them another cure or curse. Remember curses are good, cures are bad. I think some people may have this reversed in their mind but remember we're dealing with DS lol!

One doesn't even have to search. The topic "*** A Karmic Change ***" is stickied right to the top of the board.  ;)

Cures and Curses can also be awarded by clicking on floaties. We haven't seen one in a while - but one never knows when another may show up.  :D

i haven't been posting much lately...my computer has a virus and it's running so slowly it's just not fun. >:(

but i was somewhat surprised to see that i was in the top twenty posters with the "most time online".some of you have been here much longer than me.

when i logged on today i clocked in at 20 days,23 hours and 44 minutes.so i'm about to hit 21 days!

i usually end up watching the show anywhere from two to four hours a week.generally in two-hour blocks(four or five episodes)like watching a movie.

That could lead to less time spent on the forum. If they gave out prizes, it would probably be something like a mouse pad.  ;)

Exactly! We don't want to distract anyone from spending their time on the forum.  [nono]  If we were to reward members, it would be in the form of some "special" forum privilege. And, actually, a few of those are already in the works. But discussing anything now would be premature.  ;)

Holy shit...I mean, sweet goddess!  I'm right behind Midnite in most time spent here. I'm smack dab sandwiched between two evil women in the list so far...very nice.  >:D
I haven't had the time or energy to post much lately, but I check the site everyday. I have it set up that I'm always logged in when I visit here, which might account for the minutes ticking by...that and the wonderful world of tabbed browsing.  ;D And I don't know about anyone else, but dealing with a disorder that has ADD and OCD aspects sometimes has its negatives and positives - especially if one is trying to do a million things at the same time and keep sane. I find the Forum/DSBoards and the JuliaList to be nice respite/escape from a more insane and hectic world...
Anyhoo, just reading the posts here takes a while, for me, and if I have a moment to actually respond and utilize the wonderful preview feature well...time just adds up. ;)

p.s. As I struggle through another web class, I bow to your greatness MB... and your teasing leaves me very intrigued.  ^-^

I have it set up that I'm always logged in when I visit here, which might account for the minutes ticking by...that and the wonderful world of tabbed browsing.

Well, no on both counts.  :)  Having "always stay logged in" doesn't add time to a member's time spent online stat because the stat only measures the time actually spent active on the forum. And once one switches tabs in a browser, it's just like you've left the first site for the next. The first site doesn't consider you as being there again until you open its tab again.  ;)

People need to face up to the simple fact that their time spent online stats haven't been padded just because they leave their browsers open to the forum or they have "always stay logged in" activated. Yes, you really have been active on the forum for that period of time. Accept it and embrace it.  ;)  But as I've said, none of us spend as much time here as I've noticed very many others spend on other forums, so don't think the time you've spent here is any indication whatsoever that you don't have a life apart from the forum.  :D  Well, at least in comparison to those other people.  ;D

I know that. Let me clarify - I just meant that it's easier to pop in for a visit and glance at the posts and my PM's and whatnot when I'm always logged in, and hence the minutes add up when I actively browse around. And sometimes I jump from one tab to the next, for example when I'm doing research for work and assignments and checking out this site on the same day...

I have. I'm not arguing that fact or blaming anyone at all...

For me, at this moment, it's 4 days, 22 hours and 13 minutes.  I just noticed that it says the same total time logged in until I "refresh" the page.  Then it changes to a new time.  As I am posting this, I have another window open and have refreshed the page in the other window to find out the current total time logged in.  [bigok]

A couple of months ago, I finished watching the ENTIRE series for the first time.  (By watching videos and DVD's that I purchased.)  I started watching Episode 1 just after DS went off the air on Sci-Fi.  I was watching sporatically - some days would be marathons when I would watch several episodes at a time.   [shkdg]

I am now keeping up (pretty much) with the "Watching Project" and watching the early Barnabas episodes now.  That's an average of only one episode a day.  But sometimes I watch more than one episode in a day to get caught up.  At first, I thought one episode a  day sounded like a small amount, but sometimes I don't have time to watch even that one episode! [winkg]
