Who on the show do you think suffered the most all throughout the show's run?
-
Ok, tough choices. My choice for the longest suffering is Barnabas since I'm counting 172+ years stuck in that coffin and knowing all his loved ones are dead. But he had to move on. He carried his anguish on his shoulders though. I picked him because of that.
As far as the one who suffered the most, I would say Julia, because her achievements on the impossible was never recognized [curing the undead] and for the love she had for the man who never reciprocated that love. If it were me, I would have moved on and found someone else but she stuck right beside Barnabas for years. In time, he was completely devoted to her but not in a romantic sense. That had to sting.

Julia, hands down. I don't think there was ever character in history of the show that was as long suffering over her feelings for Barnabas as she!

Who else but Julia???

Willie Loomis. Ok so at first he deserved a comeuppance but he got way more than he deserved. At the first he suffered greatly, but he must've come to enjoy it because
after Wyndcliff, he comes back for more!
There are others who suffered as well, but their suffering was of shorter duration. Beth in 1897, who never caught a break through the whole storyline.
Liz Stoddard who
holed herself up at home for 18 years over a supposed murder that never even happened.
Joe Haskell who
lost Maggie because of Angelique and Nicholas and then later goes nuts when he sees what has become of his two cousins and ends up at Wyndcliff.
Chris Jennings who
suffered from a curse that he did not deserve and had nothing to do with him.
I would agree with those who said Julia and Barnabas since each had suffering of long duration.

i chose Maggie, because
she is attacked and held prisoner by a vampire
losses her father
losses her boyfriend
then most of all
she loses her sanity and is taken to Wyndcliffe

I have to agree with DSFan. Maggie was the one who took the most rotten apples of life. None of it was of her making. While Julia didn't exactly sail through everything, she was an educated woman, obviously financially secure, could pick her own ticket. She made her own decisions about staying and getting involved in things when she could've easily packed up and left. The exception to this was when she and Barnabas had their first "tussle" leading to that nasty business with Dave; in that case, things got out of control. After that, she should've learned her lesson, but she hung around anyway, so if miserable stuff happened to her, it was of her own choice to become involved, rather than taking different directions with her life.

i agree.
i just can't see julia as the show's most long-suffering character.i've been watching the 1967 episodes and it's easy to forget how coldly ambitious her character started out as.she sacraficed the well-being of a young woman in who's care she had been put in charge of to pursue a personal goal.
she softens up over time and they come to rationalize her and barnabas' actions by making them the show's by default anti-heros(see...if we don't create an artificial woman adam will kill vicki!).but julia inserted herself into all of these situations.
did she fall in love with someone who didn't love her back?yes.haven't we all.but considering the types of catastrophes that befell most of the other characters on a constant basis she got off relatively easy.
dr. julia hoffman didn't get anything she didn't sign on the dotted line for.

I'm with Jackie on Barnabas. He's had over a century of suffering at the hands of Angelique and her meddlesome ways. Julia certainly did suffer with her love for Barnabas, and of course, because she never was recognized by the Dave Woodard Ghost Fund (DWGF) with the coveted "You Cured a Vampire Who Forced You To Kill Me Award". Damn, her name really would've looked AWESOME etched in gold.
And please, don't forget all the suffering that Maggie's 1970PT incarnation had to go through at the hands of Alexis/Angelique/Alexis.
Also, if we're talking in terms of which actor played the characters who suffered the most, I'd have to go with KLS-- 2 Maggies, Kitty, Rachel, Josette, am I forgetting anyone?

WORD Alondra! Word! If I'd had to kiss him, I'll join a convent! Now, David Selby, Johnny Karlen, Don Briscoe, they are a different story altogether! ;) I often tell my friends that I would tell RD that my parents are from Louisville, KY too, but I don't because then I'd have to TALK to the man! >:D
P.S. I picked Barnabas, but Julia would be a tie too. ;)
