I've not purchased the DS: The Beginning DVDs, so I can't comment on this one way or the other. Someone on the Home Theater Forum has posted about disc problems with the last disc in his set:
http://www.hometheaterforum.com/htf/showthread.php?p=3076586#post3076586
Thought this could be of interest to anyone here who has purchased the set. May just be an isolated problem.
-
Thanks for reporting this and supplying the the link. I'll check mine tonight.
-
Oh how stupid! I played #29-- the one ending with Burke holding the bleeder valve-- and the cut is so abrupt. The final few seconds are gone (there should be a crack of thunder, then a closeup), plus full credits. Even "This is a Dan Curtis Production" is gone. How lame is it to have this happen to 5 eps (according to the poster)? :-
Thanks for the heads up, MsCriseyde.
-
Ugh. I was hoping it was just an isolated issue. :(
-
Yeah mine too. >:( :-X

What a nuisance. Everybody who bought them should phone MPI (and perhaps followup the phone call with a letter--if it were me, I'd ask for a name and address where I could send a letter of complaint).
Of course, if they admit there is a glitch in how that disc was authored and they agree to replace free of charge, AND it doesn't happen in the next set, things will be resolved very happily.

What a pain, I hope they resolve these issues before they release the Begginng DVD's to the world at large. :-
-
WAY OT -
MPI doesn't sell the VHSs any more? :(
-
I'm leaning towards returning it and canceling my membership. I'm gonna see what MPI has to say first.
-
Please make sure to keep us updated on what MPI does to finx the problem. I'm itching to get me hands on these and am put off by the idea of the DVDs being glitched.
-
Maybe this was covered somewhere else--do the DVDs include the opening slates the way the tapes did?

They do, Gothick. And the announcements during the closing credits are included, such as the upcoming broadcast of Lucy Johnson's wedding at the end of #28. (Which is so appropriate considering that LBJ's photo shows up in Constable Carter's office during that ep.)
Of course, a similar announcement following #29 was cut from the DVD. :-
-
MPI has been researching this issue for the past few days and stated they will be contacting club members in the next few days to resolve it. And information will be posted on the Forums as well.
-
We will have an announcement on this issue later today with information
on how to obtain the corrected disc.
Thank you for your inquiry,
MPI Home Video

Episode 29 the second episode on Disc 4 Dark Shadows the Begining volume
1 is missing the end of the episode. Will I be able to exchange the disc
when a corrected vershion becomes avaiable.

Waner Brothers Superman Ultimate Collection was Miissing the original audio mix on Superman the Movie and the special features on Superman III. Warner had you call a toll free number and mailed an envlope to mail back the defective Discs which I did. A few weeks latter I got the corrected replacements in the mail. I wonder if MPI will do the same thing.
-
This information will be going out to all DVD Club members via email this afternoon regarding the disc issue:
"We have discovered that Disc 4 of Dark Shadows - The Beginning Collection 1 is defective. Due to a manufacturing error, several episodes on Disc 4 are missing the closing credits and small portions at the end of the episodes. (Discs 1-3 are not affected.) We apologize for this inconvenience and we will be sending a replacement disc to the Dark Shadows DVD Club Members who have had Dark Shadows The Beginning Collection 1 shipped to them prior to February 1st.
Club members do not need to contact MPI to receive the corrected disc. We will be sending the corrected disc to all club members who have received Dark Shadows The Beginning Collection 1 through the DVD Club.
Club members who have yet to have this collection shipped through the club will receive the corrected version in the set when they are on this installment.
Thank you for your understanding and your interest in Dark Shadows."

Thanks for the heads up - glad to hear the situation will be corrected.
-
For all of the grousing about the fact that this series is being sold exclusively through the DVD club first, here's a situation where it's actually a good thing. MPI knows exactly who's purchased copies of the set and will be able to remedy the problem. Had the discs gone out through outlets like Amazon, every buyer would've had to contact them individually, assuming that they recognized the problem as a defect with the disc.
-
Well, one thing's for sure: I'll wait until this situation has been corrected, and THEN I'll consider the MPI deal!
-
First-class action on the part of MPI!
-
After reading about this, I'm glad I'm not in the DVD club and decided to wait until the collection is released to the general public before buying them. By then, any glitches should be corrected. Cudos to MPI for correcting the problem so quickily.

I have a question for MPI_Marketing:
Does MPI plan on distributing The Beginning series [pre-Barnabas DVD sets] to the public via retailers? If so, do you know or can you say when that would be?
I hope it's ok to ask this here since this thread is about the DVDs. If not, tell me where so others who are interested can get the same answer. Thanks.
-
mpi_marketing has already addressed the issue. Search through their posts. ;)

I've seen a lot of MPI bashing on posts over the years--and even bashed MPI myself once for the audio mix on Dan Curtis's Dorian Gray/Turn of the Screw DVDs--but since I joined the DS DVD club a few years back, I have nothing but positive comments for MPI. As a member, I've received a few freebie goodies, and advance notice and delivery of some specials. Even when there have been mistakes in ordering or billing (few and far between, BTW), I've received courteous and prompt customer service, by both email and phone. So....let's not be too hard on MPI for a few errors once in great while. After all, without MPI's interest in DS and Dan Curtis, we probably wouldn't even have the DS series on home video and would have to rely on the VHS tapes we recorded from SciFi channel starting nearly 15 years ago. (Frankly, I love the DVD releases for the clarity of video and audio materials, and the extras.)

Thanks MB! Just did and got my answer. ;D

My question is has anyone who has already gotten their DVD set gotten the email that was mentioned in the MPI response? I only ask because I got the set from MPI the week it came out and I have not gotten any email from MPI.

Raholt, I received the email yesterday (Thursday) afternoon.
Did they email you when your set was shipped?
It's great to see you, btw.
-
Actually, when my set was shipped I got a series of emails, one a day from January 17 - 22. My set shipped on the 19 th. All the emails said the same thing, telling me my set had shipped and all but the first one gave me the tracking info. I did wonder then if they would ever stop emailing so they do have my email address. I have not tried to contact them about the problem, as I had not looked at the episodes and only heard about the problem yesterday. My understand was that whether or not you had contacted them about the problem that you would get an email and eventually a replacement. Odd.
It is nice to be back agian.

Welcome back, Raholt!! :) :) That sure is a name from long ago!

LOL Dom and I joked between us about that same thing.

That's correct. Their email stated, "Club members do not need to contact MPI to receive the corrected disc. We will be sending the corrected disc to all club members who have received Dark Shadows the Beginning Collection 1 through the DVD Club."
-
MPI sent a notice to their DVD club that shipment began for the replacement disc. It states, "The disc has just completed manufacturing & has been quality tested to make sure that the issues with the previous version have been corrected."
As the previous post states, it is being automatically sent to all club members who received the 1st Collection. Anyone who hasn't yet received Collection 1 will be purchasing a corrected set. (Will the incomplete disc become a collector's item? ;))
In other news, shipping of Collection 2 (eps 35-70) will start the week of March 26. The eps are promised "complete and uncut." :D
-
I got that message too.

Me too¢â‚¬¦yes, after all my penny pinching grousing, I caved and joined up to get the Beginning DVD's. I was getting a little antsy about completing the collection so; I sat down one snowy day and did the math. I figured that while I was going to pay a bit more in the long run, it would be worth it to me in the short run. Ahhh well, I guess peace of mind comes at a price sometimes! (You just KNOW MPI was counting on somewhat warped, nostalgia tinged reasoning like that now dontcha! ;))
-
I got my replacement disc yesterday (Saturday, March 3). I'm very pleased with MPI's prompt correction of this problem.
