Title: Which character would you love to give a good hard smack in the face?
Post by: IluvBarnabas on December 13, 2006, 06:05:26 AM
I got a few candidates in mind....
Reverend Trask for his merciless persecution of Vicki....I wanted to wipe the smirk off his face after she fainted when the judges convicted her and sentenced her to die.

The Reverend Gregory Trask....oh boy where do I begin with this guy....his cruelty to Rachel and Jamison and Nora, plotting Minerva's murder (and setting Tim Shaw up to be the fall guy), marrying Judith for her money then trying to drive her crazy by conjuring up Minerva's ghost to torment her...forget a slap in the face I think it would be too kind.....I think a good hard kick in his Adam's apples is more deserving for him!

Gerard Stiles (possessed by Judah Zachery)......forcing Daphne to marry him by bewitching her, setting Quentin up to catch them so he could be captured, then gloated to Quentin while watching him being led to his execution. I found myself wanting to put a knife in him myself like Leticia tried to do!

Jason McGuire....I will admit the guy was a charmer and there were times despite myself, I found myself liking him until the truth about Paul Stoddard came out. If I had been Elizabeth I would have found another poker and this time made sure I finished the job!

Angelique/Cassandra Collins.....her list of murderous mischief is too long to list, but I will say (and I am quoting Vicki here) she deserved a hell of a lot more than a slap in the face for causing the deaths of Sarah and Naomi with her curse. Killing an innocent child and your mother-in-law who went out of her way to be nice to you....that's just pure evil to me.

And, sorry to say, as much as I love him, Barnabas also needed some good smacks now and then for lots of reasons I am sure all of us can come up with....but especially for his man-handling of Julia when she was trying to cure him and his life-long obsession with Josette, he was constantly comparing every woman he met to her....I just wanted to do what Cher did in Moonstruck, slap him hard on both sides of his cheeks and say "Snap out of it!"
What are you thoughts?
Eve would have killed Adam, instead of the other way around.
I would have liked to have slapped Angelique for medaling in people's affairs, mainly Barnabas's, Josette's and Jeremiah's! Not only did she ruin the relationship between Josette and barnabas, but she also changed Jeremiah's life forever, eventually leading to his death!  [santa_angry] Boy, she really deserved a slap then!

David (Early, psycho version) - only I'd like to have him select a switch from the woods and then apply it to his lower set of cheeks.

Jason - The way he treated Liz annoyed the #$% out of me.

The first Willie: A good slap in the face followed by a swift kick in the pants.

Mrs. Johnson: She was quite the eves dropping irritant at one time.  She earned a couple of handprints on her face.

Harry Johnson: What a twit.

Buzz: Rymes with twit.

Aristede: Simp.

I'm with you on that one. I think most of the characters have, at some point, been the cause of me yelling at the screen, "Would someone just slap him/her already?!"

One particular moment that comes to mind, though, is when Jason is trying to remember the words to a toast while Liz is talking to him. I swear, if he'd gone on one minute more about what type of fruit tree it was that he had seen, I was going to reach through the screen and backhand him so hard it'd knock the brogue right out of him.

Yes, and for me it would have happened early on when she was workin' the cure and he was evil. What a wonderfully tense moment that would have created in the scene. Barn probably would have choked the crap out of her.

Bruno 1970 - - - Just for having that incredible "Chateau Pimp of Hollywood" hair and wardrobe.  [cool9] His "I'll do anything" attitude makes me want to see him degraded in every possible way.  WHOOPS!  That would have to be a modern cable show, wouldn't it? [santa_evil]

Both 1970PT Quentin & Maggie needed a good hard slap across the face. Quentin possibly with knuckles involved.

I'm surprised no one has yet mentioned Abigail. I can't say I ever wanted to slap her, more like throttle.

Vicki deserved a good slap several times in 1795. If only to say "What the hell are you thinking saying this? SHUT UP and keep a LOW profile!"

True. But I'm thinking arashi probably meant a specific mention of Abigail - and possibly for specific reasons. Though it certainly includes her, "everyone" is a bit generic.  [santa_wink]

one should never strike a child however...

david certainly tested my patience during the early barnabas storyline when he broke into the old house(after he had repeatedly been told not to)and encounters maggie done up a la josette collins and fancies her a "ghost".

not only was this clearly not an appparition but a flesh and blood person it was also a girl david knew well and also knew was missing.

now i realize we are supposed to see this scene through the fanciful perspective of an "imaginative child" but it comes across as ridiculous.it's also another case of the writers trying to make david act younger than he was.while this type of fantasy might be reasonably understandable coming from a four year old one would hope an intelligent child of ten would be able to make this differentiation.

I would also agree in most cases. But if I had to deal with that little homicidal maniac (still talking about the early version) I would have either slapped him with my hand or slapped him into a straight jacket.  [santa_cheesy]

Well.. yeah, I think the same thing... but we would require some adjustment time ourselves.     If we really found ourselves in 1795... really... it would be a hell of a lot more jarring and hard to take in than it was for Victoria I think.     Sure, you can see there's a pattern, in one character after another looking like familiar people, but you don't get used to something THAT crazy very fast.    You don't start expecting it.     You don't get blase, and think, oh sure, that guy looks just like Maggie's father, big deal...

The longer it's been since I've watched 1795, the more convinced I become that Vicky believed, while she was there, that she was in a dream, and so it made dreamlike sense to say, "Hey, Joe, what are you doing in that yummy uniform?" and so on.  I might change my mind if I went back and watched it again.

Something that has started to interest me recently is the question of how Sarah managed to propel Vicky back into the past.  That's some serious power that Sarah wielded there, and I wouldn't have expected her to be able to pull it off.
Title: Re: Which character would you love to give a good hard smack in the face?
Post by: MagnusTrask on December 22, 2006, 09:14:43 AM
However, it makes perfect sense to me that Sarah, in a seance, would have been able to inhabit Victoria, and put her through a sort of time-compressed dream, taking her personally through the whole story of how Barnabas came to be, as if she'd been there herself.    Sarah would have thought this was a story that had to be told for the sake of everyone involved, to stop further murders, and to make Victoria and perhaps the Collinses aware of what a good man Barnabas started out as, so they could not judge him too harshly.    I think it's very possible that this was the original intent.

Sarah just exchanging one governess for another across a couple centuries makes no sense.   (I don't know the latter half of 1795 or 1968 though.)   My little theory doesn't account for the governess-swap though.    A dream during a possession wouldn't account for Miss Whoever popping into Victoria's seat in 1967.

This scenario would have led to Barnabas's rehabilitation as a protagonist whose past was known and forgiven by some of the "present-day" characters, at least... more than just Julia.... this may have been considered too much to expect from the family.

This is an excellent point, Magnus. Vicki might have seemed completely mad to keep spouting off how much everyone looked like people she knew, but honestly, we the viewers were able to see her predicament from the outside, only experiencing her shock and bewilderment vicariously. And after all, she, unlike us, didn't have the daily reminder recited to her, "A seance has been held at the great house of Collinwood...the faces are the same, but the names and relationships have changed..."  [santa_grin]

I can understand her surprise and shock or whatever reaction she had as she saw all these familiar-looking people, one after the other, but after the first one or two instances, I would think she would learn to keep her thoughts to herself and not tell THEM about it!

Also, if someone from the past (like the real governess) came to their future, they clearly would be at a big loss.  But, someone going back in time presumably knows at least some things about those times.  And, Vicki was a teacher - she presumably had a good bit of knowledge of earlier American times.  After her initial shock and disorientation, it should have been a lot easier to comprehend how they would think, and the inventions they wouldn't know about, etc. and to act accordingly.  She might not have been able to pass perfectly, but surely she could have fit in better than she did.

Exactly my point -- and my aggravation -- on that one, Josette.  OF COURSE, she would be shocked and bewildered, but the sensible Vicky who was sceptical and reasoning about so many other things at present day Collinwood would have had the presence of mind to keep her thoughts and opinions to herself while she tried to reason her way OUT of where she was.  NOT just spout off random thoughts one after the other.  Before Vicky got dumbed down, she tended to keep her own councel a lot of the time while she thought about things.

ANother of my pet peeves with her conduct.  SHE KEPT TELLING PEOPLE ABOUT THINGS THAT WOULD HAPPEN WHEN SHE SHOULD HAVE KNOWN THAT IN THAT TIME IT WOULD MAKE HER STICK OUT LIKE THE PROVERBIAL SORE THUMB.  She needed to blend in and observe -- and she made no real attempt to do either.

While it's probably true that within the 1795 storyline it seems pretty stupid for Vicki to be continually telling people that they look like someone else, we should probably try to remember that it was mostly a necessary device to clue the audience in to the fact that the present-day actors were now playing different roles in 1795. It wasn't unusual for people to only tune into their soaps for about 3 out of 5 shows a week, so the writers felt it was necessary for Vicki to have the same reaction to each new character simply because some members of the audience might have missed her reactions to the previous characters.  [santa_smiley]  Though it probably wouldn't have hurt if at least once or twice she thought her reaction to herself rather than simply blurting it out.  [santa_wink]

I think slapping is only for the annoying and weaselly, rather than for the all-out villains, who require something with extreme prejudice.

Victoria.... I'm in the middle.    She was clearly very thrown by it all, as we would be, but would have dummied up somewhat sooner than she did, being intelligent.

I disagree about a modern-day person having all this awareness about past eras and how people thought back then.   We have a bit of perspective that could help, but probably we have even more distorted ideas that would foul things up.   Over the course of my life, I've witnessed an increasingly silly and more distorting popular culture that even gives us warped ideas about eras I've lived through.     Victoria would be smarter about it all than the average person, since she's pretty well-read, I'm guessing.

Just about all the main characters at one time or another:

1. Barnabas more than once... how he treated David, Willie, Julia AND Dr. Woodard early on.  Actually he needed a good staking from what he did to Woodard!
2. Angelique... she really needed to get a life away from her obsession with Barnabas!
3. Roger... do I need to say more?
4. Carolyn especially when she was whining!
5. Vicki when she constantly turned a blind eye to Barnabas! She wouldn't love him but she acted like she did. That girl got "stupidier" with every passing episode.  ;)
6. Julia whenever she blindly followed Barnabas' commands that were dangerous [mostly what happened with Dr. Woodard]
7. Those Leviathan brats... don't like any of them.

I'm sure there are more but that's all for now.

For this I could list a thousand examples but I will confine myself to one per storyline.

Pre Barnabas storyline Carolyn for
how she ran after Burke and made a fool out of herself over him in spite of the fact that she was warned over and over that he was only using her. Laura for wanting to burn her son.
Early Barnabas storyline: Barnabas himself for
how he treated Willie, Maggie and Julia. How he expected Maggie to just give up her existence to be a different person.
1795: Angelique for
how she used innocent people to get her revenge on Barnabas, killing some, making others sick, and expecting Vicki to die for her crimes. There may be a tie here with Trask and Nathan Forbes who were utter creeps.
Adam storyline: Cassandra for
the dream curse
Also Nicholas and Adam himself at times.

Werewolf and Quentin's ghost storyline: The ghost of Quentin.

1897: Gregory Trask, the fiend, for simply existing, along with all the rest of his heinous deeds! Others include Aristede, Petofi, amongst others.

Leviathan: Sky Rumson for
his hypocrisy, expecting his wife to be honest with him while he hid secrets from her.
Also Bruno but I always hate Bruno!

1970 Parallel time: Angelique for
murdering Alexis and taking her place, tormenting Maggie, and murdering Will Loomis.
1995: The ghost of Gerard Stiles for being so darn ugly, and for
forcing Julia to betray Barnabas. Though it led to that sweet "Never without you" scene
Summer of '70: Ghost of Gerard, and Roxanne the vampire for
biting Maggie out of jealousy over Sebastian
1840: Judah Zachary for
possessing Gerard and causing him to be a little bit more wicked than he already was, Gerard for already being wicked. Samantha for being such a nit and choosing Gerard over Quentin which makes no sense!
1841 parallel time: Brutus Collins for
cursing his family. What a bozo brain! Morgan for being an obnoxious jerk, and Catherine for marrying him for his money rather than marrying the man she truly loved.
I guess it's hard to confine myself to only one per storyline lol!

Wow!!! Barely ne1 said nicholas blair needed a slap. Iam sure every one by now knows that humbert is my fav actor on ds, and i love all his characters. But as much as i luv him he did deserve a smack or 2. especially when he was charles dawson he was such a rat. lolll especially when him and quentin were going at it in the court rm when quentin was on trial for witchcraft. Humbert was amazeing as charles dawson. The number 1 person who needed a smack everytime she spoke was julia hoffman!! my god did she get on my nerves. david also did a deserve a slap as well. I think even Elizabeth needed a slap 2!! especailly during the my fav period the levithins and before was buried alive.

Oh don't think that just because no one said Nicholas, Evan or Charles that we don't think they deserved a good slap every now and then. I was trying to confine myself to only a few and you see how that worked out. Really just about everyone deserved a slap every now and then even my sweet Willie Loomis before his change, especially when he
asked Sam if he had ever painted Maggie in the nude, though he didn't use those exact words we all KNEW what he meant!
As for the HAA characters, and I love HAA as an actor and think he's quite handsome, the one thing I think I'd give Nicholas a slap for is for the way he
changed Adam's thinking. Adam was under the good influence of the Professor but when Nicholas got a hold of him he changed Adam's way of thinking and changed his personality. He didn't care about Adam other than that he wanted to use him and Eve to create these slaves for his master. I guess one can't judge him for being so evil since he was a devil worshipper, one can't expect any less.
I can't offhand think of an incident in which I'd slap Evan Hanley, since even when he
called up the devil he got Trask which was too perfect. I had to laugh and when I'm laughing I am not in the mood for slapping.
As for Charles Dawson, he was
under the control of Judah Zachary and had to do his bidding.
Now if we had seen HAA play a good character? I don't know. He was so good at playing the bad ones! >:D

I can think of an incident where I'd slap Evan Hanley and GOOD.  >:(
After meeting Trask and being blackmailed by him for practicing black magic, Hanley brainwashed Tim Shaw into killing Trask's wife, Minerva.  After the poisoning, Hanley showed up and removed the spell from Tim and then accused him of killing Mrs. Trask.
IMO that give good reason to slap him real good.  >:D

True on all of the above, except the last one, really the Leviathans was not so bad, at least not the last time I watched. I did find it rather interesting this past time, though it will never be my favorite storyline.

As for Evan Hanley,
well he was being blackmailed by Trask but as someone on one of the groups pointed out, he could have found a way out of that, maybe putting the poison in a drink for Trask. We don't know whose bright idea it was to use Tim this way, I suspect Trask since Evan didn't even know Tim before this. Trask was the plotter in all of this and Evan just went along with it. I blame Trask more than him since it was Trask's wife who was being killed. I hate Trask with a passion.
I would very much like to have seen somebody give Nicholas Blair a good hard slap, because I'm sure his reaction would be so much fun to watch.  "Very good, my dear [So-and-so]!  I didn't know you had it in you!  If that's what you like, I can offer you a number of interesting career options, all of them very lucrative..."

I thought that Besty Durkin as Vicky
gave Nicholas a good hard slap? No? Maybe it was just a good dressing down?
That was a great scene, I loved it, however it played out. Betsy played it to the hilt!

I don't think Vicki (Betsy) slapped him, I'm pretty sure she didn't. She did read him the riot act
concerning Maggie, but by this time Nicholas was in a rush to get everything done, since his master had given him only 24 hours. He did however manage to call up Tom Jennings to deal with her, or was this another time? He removed the stake from Tom and Tom went after Vicki, I think it was at this time but might have been while Alexandra was still playing her. It was at this time that Barnabas made him face daylight and he was destroyed. Now that was some scene!
I just watched that episode and I know for a fact that Vicki/Betsy most definitely did not slap Nicholas. Also
Betsy was playing Vicki when Nicholas took the stake from Tom's heart and sent him to kill her.
