Obviously, it didn't happen but I just read an item in an old soap magazine from the 1970's that stated that both Michael and Antony Ponzini (the original Vince Wolek on OLTL) had tested for major parts in The Godfather. All actors audition for parts that they don't get but it's fun to wonder which part that he might have played.

Through eBay, I just acquired two issues of a Joan Bennett fanzine, with the very odd title Under Bennett's Bonnet. These go back to 1970, when my teenage interest in DS was at its peak. I had absolutely no idea that Joan had a fan club during the run of the series. Over the years, I have heard about fanzines and clubs for most of the actors but this was new to me. Nor were the names on the publication (Gail Katz, Sue Agranoff, Rachel Silverman) at all familiar.
The zines are very much a product of their time. Hand drawn graphics. Typewritten, with lots of misspellings and overstrikes. But there's still a certain charm to it. They have access to Joan who was unsurprisingly gracious. There are some scattered interviews with Joan. Nothing particularly shocking, unless you happen to be shocked by the revelation that Joan didn't like turnips. There are two chapters of an 1897 piece of fan fiction where Judith is menaced by the return of a flesh and blood Gregory Trask. He found a secret passageway out of the room. Of course, that doesn't explain how he survived the gunshot. No idea if the story continued beyond two chapters.
Not to say that there aren't some interesting bits. I was unaware that there had been a bomb scare at the studio on May 1, 1970.
There is also an interview with DS hair stylist Edith Tilles. Edith came to DS after having been the hairdresser on Jackie Gleason and Gentle Ben. I presume that she did the hair for Dennis Weaver and the other actors but you never know. The most interesting part for me is that if you sent Edith a SASE, she would send you a clipping from your favorite actor's hair. I would love to find out if anyone actually did this! And, did Edith have to fight off KLS for any Frid clippings?

Calendar Events / Announcements '18 / KLS and Fonzie?

In some ways, not as bizarre as you might think. In others, more bizarre than you could imagine.

In the early 1980's, there was a Saturday morning cartoon spinoff of Happy Days entitled Fonz and the Happy Days Gang where Arthur Fonzarelli, Ralph Malph, Richie Cunningham join a talking dog named Mr. Cool and an alien girl with Pippi Longstocking pigtails named Cupcake in a series of odd adventures. Seems that Cupcake's spaceship is also a time machine but it malfunctions, sending the characters anywhere and everywhere, except 1957 Milwaukee. Part Mr. Peabody. Part Sliders. Part Doctor Who. Surprisingly, this ran for two years.
What does this have to do with TLATKLS? Wikipedia and imdb both list her as "additional voices". As good as she is at selfpromotion, Scott has never alluded to this in any of her books or during a star panel. I never saw the show, though there seem to be some episodes on YouTube. From what I've read about it, I can't say that I blame her for not bringing it up.

Barnabas, Tiny Tim and Arnold the Pig. It sounds like the Dream Curse on acid but these three 1960's celebrities were on the guest list at an auto show in Minneapolis in January of 1970/71, along with Pat Buttram and Miss Vicki, who was Mrs. Tim at that point. I know that Donna Wandrey has mentioned being at an auto show with Frid, Arnold and Mr. and Mrs. Tim but her name didn't appear on the somewhat cropped ad that I ran across. Frid was billed as Barnabas, which probably happened a lot back then. Oh, to have lived in Minneapolis back then to see the appearance of some of the 1960's major pop icons in the same place. I can only hope pictures of the auto show are out there somewhere. A shot of Frid with either Tim or Arnold (or both!) would be my DS Holy Grail. [santa_wink]

Calendar Events / Announcements '17 II / At Home With KLS

The November 20th issue of Closer magazine features an interview with TLATKLS. There are also quite a few pictures of her humble abode in Beverly Hills. Worth checking out if you want to see how the other half lives. She does mention DS and says that Joan Bennett gave her one of her dresses that she almost wore to the premiere of the Depp movie.
The interview is pleasant, though no more or less than any other interview in such a magazine would be. She does say that she has done several movies in the past year, including one where she plays Mamie Eisenhower. I can't wait to see how she's made up for that.

Interesting little bit of trivia from the Wonder Woman imdb page. Before being cast on Charlie's Angels, Kate (as well as her Angel costars Jaclyn Smith and Farrah Fawcett) auditioned for the part of Wonder Woman, which was, of course, the part played by Lynda Carter. Things seem to have worked out for the best for everyone concerned. But if Kate complained about the quality of the scripts on Charlie's Angels, can you imagine how she would have reacted to the scripts on Wonder Woman?

Calendar Events / Announcements '17 II / DS autographs on eBay
« on: July 16, 2017, 11:03:28 PM »
A longtime fan, Randy Vest, sold two pieces of vintage DS memorabilia on eBay this past week. One was a letter from Louis Edmonds, written in the spring of 1971. Due to the impending cancellation of DS, Louis did not feel it was a good time to reactive his fan club. The letter is typed, with an original signature, and sold for $89.00.
The second was a handwritten letter from Clarice Blackburn, written post DS in 1971. Like Louis, she begs off on the idea of having a fan club. She apparently had one during the run of DS but it doesn't seem to have been a positive experience for her. ("Never again!"). She encourages him to watch a certain episode of Where The Heart Is, which was a pivotal episode for her.  The letter sold for $393.00! This does sound kind of high but Clarice is not a common DS autograph. She only attended one festival at the Vista in NYC. She did the cast reunion, taped some interviews and that was it. She did not sign any autographs.

The May-July 2017 issue of Filmfax, which I found at Barnes and Noble, has a very good interview with Ken Bald, who drew the DS newspaper comic strip. Bald has extensive golden age comic book credits going back to the classic Captain America, Submariner and Blonde Phantom. He also did a lot of horror comics in the 1950's. He was a fan of the tv show and loved doing the book. According to Bald, the strip did well in areas like NYC and California but the bible belt never warmed up to the idea of a vampire hero.

The granddaddy of reality TV is making a comeback. Battle of the Network Stars is returning to network TV, with about 100 different celebrities, some of which you may actually have heard of. The original was quite a guilty pleasure for many of us. I know that I will never forget KLS trying hopelessly to navigate a kayak. And, while Geoffrey Scott may not have given Dustin Hoffman any serious competition in acting, he was definitely someone you'd want on your side in a tug of war
The DS connection continues in this incarnation. Kelly Hu, who played Julia in the 2004 DS pilot, is on one of the teams. I wonder what stunts they'll have her do.
