Title: Dark Shadows Remembrance Weekend
Post by: patrickm on February 20, 2024, 05:18:40 AM
I just happened to come across this announcement on a Dark Shadows News facebook page.

The Dark Shadows actors will join together with fans this summer in Southrrn California to remember Lara Parker with a special memorial event open to the public at no cost, in addition to a gathering celebrating the 100th anniversary of Jonathan Frids birth and a Dark Shadows banquet. Full details will be announced soon.

I was beginning to wonder if this was going to happen due to the length of time already but certainly glad that it is.  I do hope some sort of tribute will occur during the banquet for the other Dark Shadows alumni who have passed since the last Dark Shadows Festival including John Karlen, Diana Millay, Denise Nickerson, Geoffrey Scott, Robert Rodan, Chris Pennock, Mitch Ryan, Bob Cobert and Sy Tomashoff.

Thanks for the update, Patrickm; the memorial should be a very moving and noteworthy event.

Ironically, this event to memorialize Lara Parker will be the biggest DS event to be held since the presumptive end of the DS Festivals several years ago.

Who knows, maybe the news of this Lara Parker memorial will even motivate some of the longtime and missing posters here to return to the Dark Shadows Forums to opine on Ms. Parker’s recent death and the opportunity to meet other DS fans from around the country at the event this summer?

I wonder if Jim Pierson will host/oversee the upcoming DS banquet this summer?

Although, I understand that Jim Pierson has apparently gone on to bigger and better things, such as producing those 1960s rock & roll group concert pledge shows for PBS. Maybe overseeing a DS event at this point would be small potatoes, so to speak, for the ever-enterprising Mr. Pierson?

A few more details have been put out.

Mary Oleary is helping Jim Pierson organize the event and is reaching out to local fans to help volunteer. Anyway, its going to be a 2 day event held at the Burbank Marriott in July.  Day 1 will be the memorial for Lara free of charge. Day 2 will be celebration of Frid with Q & A with the DS stars, theatrical performance and luncheon.  Price tba.  More details to follow.

I dunno. Not attending but wanted info on the room rates to pass along- the hotel link shows no rooms available for fri and sat.

I tried all sorts of ways using both links. Thurs and Sun avail at the DS rate but not Fri and Sat. So either you have to call the hotel direct or the hotel is already all booked.

Mary O'Leary posted on Facebook that Jim Pierson has asked the hotel to add more rooms. Apparently the block they allocated went pretty fast. According to the post, there should be more available now.

The airfare from NYC is way out of my budget. Not surprising as it's a holiday weekend and smack dab in the middle of heavy vacation travel.

Yeah, if it was simply the prices for a hotel room and the event (Lara's is even free!), I wouldn't think twice about attending - but the airfares for that weekend look pricey unless one is willing to fly sardine-packed economy class with two layovers. Not my idea of fun flights - especially when it's not like flying from the East Coast to the West Coast is only a two hour flight...

I see Jerry Lacy is on the list - having noted the other day that he just turned 88, that's impressive!

On the plus side, that Marriott is a very nice property. I stayed there when I attended The Hollywood Show several years ago. They offered attendees a lot of perks, not just a reduced room rate. If you booked their package, you received free admission to the event, reduced rate on parking and a few other perks. I also received two free breakfasts, though that was probably more random. Still, they could give Pierson lessons on negotiating.

Looks like all the added rooms have been booked and the hotel is out of available rooms again.
