Current Talk '05 II / Re: Nicholas the Bartender

i totally agree.as much as i dislike this period on the show in general this was a great scene.i love the repartee' between nicholas and cassandra.

there is a scene that follows where cass looks into the fireplace to locate vicki that is really good too.
it's both sad and funny that vicki thought the best place she could possibly "hide" was at her best friend maggie's house.
sad and funny also that cass needed to use magic to locate her there. ::)

this was a great little group of episodes that i believe concluded with a much loved moment between julia and cassandra.

Current Talk '05 II / Re: Cassandra and Julia's relationship...

that's exactly how i felt.
when cassandra first showed up at collinwood i thought "boy is this going to be good!"i was imagining it to be more like the laura collins story...exploring cassandra's relationships with roger and david and carolyn and liz.with vicki and barnabas who knew who she really was.the budding friendship with julia was another aspect of this underdeveloped storyline that had great potential(remember julia knew nothing about angelique until after 1795 and her relationship with barnabas was still somewhat undefined).

but cassandra ultimately ended up playing second banana to the adam/nicholas plot before she was ousted entirely.i found this whole character/storyline to be a key example of wasted opportunities by the writers.

i just realized that all my choices were actresses. ::)

obviously jonathan frid, john karlen, david selby, louis edmonds, thayer david and dennis patrick are tops as well.

early actors like mitch ryan, david ford and joel crothers brought alot to the table too.sad, once barnabas and later quentin take over there is little room left for this type of male character.

Current Talk '05 II / the "language" of d.s.
« on: September 24, 2005, 09:36:40 PM »
all the fuss the silver filigreed fountain pen caused a few weeks ago made me think.

d.s. fans understand a certain "language".i wasn't thinking so much about specific names(collins)or types of creatures(vampires)but more in terms of commonplace things and ideas that resonate with fans but wouldn't have any special signifigance to anyone else.

i was thinking about fountain pens and foundling homes and afghans.about telephones and teleprompters and bleeder valves.about sedatives and seances and sleeveless dresses.about music boxes and medallions and mausoleums.about kinescope and canneries and caretaker's cottages.

i know there's lots more.what can you guys think of? [ideab]

this is a great thread.

i had to give this alot of thought and found myself surprised by some of my picks.keep in mind i haven't seen the whole show so some of the characters these actors played i haven't seen yet.

1.joan bennett as elizabeth, naomi and judith collins.icy and secretive as early liz i liked her when she developed a bit more complexity during the laura collins story.she was amazing during the jason mcquire storyline when she revealed strength and also great sadness and vulnerability(although liz really irritated me during the buried alive storyline).besides barnabas naomi brought the most pathos to the 1795 storyline and again brought a touching sadness to the role.i just started to watch 1897 but i'm greatly enjoying her portrayal of judith.she's feisty and has great chemistry with david selby.

2.grayson hall as dr.julia hoffman and countess natalie dupres.grayson can bring a great hautuer to a character as well as sense of drive and ambition.but there can also be a sense of lonliness, resign and,of course, unrequited love.
as magda the jury is till out.to tell you the truth i find her to be sort of cartoonish and not very subtle.

3.lara parker as angelique and cassandra collins.i really wanted not to like her at first but she totally grew on me.
i loved cassandra but ultimately feel as if her storyline was taken away from her by adam and nicholas.i wanted more of her and less of those two.

4.nancy barrett as carolyn stoddard.great early on as snotty and petulant.she also showed strength and resolve when her family(especially her mother)needed her.i loved her rebelliousness when liz was with jason and also her strange,zombie-like attitude when she was under barnabas' control.she was a great "flawed" but ultimatly decent character.

5.marie wallace as eve and jenny collins.her eve was the only part of the detestable adam plot that i enjoyed.
i'm watching the jenny storyline now and she really takes it to new heights of insanity.completely nuts but there is something there you can care about.she's not a throw-away psycho killer.great performance!

i also really like kathryn leigh scott as early maggie evans.less so once she replaces vicki as collinwood governess.she loses alot of her "maggieness".i loved josette but don't think the character was as fleshed-out as she could have been.rachel drummond isn't that interesting to me.

ironically my favorite character from the show(as if you guys don't know)is alexandra moltke as vicki but she's actually not what i'd consider to be one of the show's best actors.she doesn't have a huge amount of range and can turn in a performance this side of bland.but she projects extreme sweetness, naivety and vulnerability.that combined with extrordinairy beauty was a winning combination for me. :-*

honorable mention also needs to be given to clarice blackburn as mrs.johnson and abigail collins and to diana millay as laura collins.

finding herself trapped in a black and white kinescope episode amy jennings sulks and refuses to recite her lines until dr.hoffman cajoles her with the promise that tomorrow they'll all be in color again.

true penny,

he does first hit the barnyards(yuck)and of course willie loomis.
but unlike the guilt ridden vampire we see in the past time periods who preys on ladies of the night(whom i suppose the writers found contemptuous enough to be disposable victims)the early 1967 barnabas seems to have no qualms about choosing "decent" people like maggie or even a relative like carolyn. :P

Current Talk '05 II / when is 'b' a 'v'?
« on: September 17, 2005, 07:07:30 PM »
i don't know how to ask this question without there being lots of spoilers in both the question itself and the answers but here goes.

after dr.lang "cures" barnabas he remains free of the affliction throughout the rest of the 1968/69 present time episodes.however when he briefly returns to 1796 to save victoria he is again a victim of the curse.when he travels back to the year 1897 he is it's victim once more.
i understand that during the 1970PT episodes he is also under the affliction(i haven't seen that storyline yet).

so my question is this.is dr.lang's "cure" permanent in the present but ineffective in other time periods where adam does not exist?or does barnabas ever become a vampire again in the present time?

i just started watching the 1897 storyline when barnabas finds himself once again...well,you know.
so you can bet that one of the first things he does is hightail it to those docks.here he meets a lady called "sophie baker".needless to say she suffers the same fate as her 1795 counterparts(though there's a funny bit with a compact).

but think about this.when barnabas is first released in 1967 he doesn't hit the docks but the diner and claims the very un-hookerish maggie evans as his first victim.there is some talk of other local girls being attacked at this time but the word prostitute is never mentioned.i wonder why?was it o.k. to talk about prostitutes in a historical context but not in the present?

i suppose being chained in a coffin for 200 years would piss anyone off but the barnabas that is first released in 1967 is very different than the one who was so filled with self loathing in 1795 when he was chained there in the first place.he's as mean as a hornet and doesn't have any qualms about it. >:D

Current Talk '05 II / ned stuart...make-up artist?
« on: September 16, 2005, 03:14:00 AM »
i just started dvd collection 13(oh you'll hear more later!) ::)

so i am just becoming aquainted with miss sabrina stuart.here she appears to be some sort of psychic invalid in the care of her dear brother nedbradfordjeffpeterclarkstuart.

now a stand-up kind of fellow all around he also appears to be her primary caregiver.so i would assume that he is responsible for this poor girl's grooming as well.so i wonder what made him think that applying an inch thick layer of seafoam green eyeshadow was doing her any favors?

i guess that we're also suppossed to assume that the visual implication of the phylis diller style fright wig is the shock of witnessing the transformation of chris jennings caused her hair to go white.

but i'd like to think that if my sister was in my care i would run a brush through her hair once in awhile.wouldn't you?

and finally why in the year 1969 in this sad girl being pushed around in a 19th century wood and cane wheelchair?was this a visual metphor for the storyline to come? :P

Current Talk '05 II / Re: 1991 Series To Be Released On DVD
« on: September 15, 2005, 02:04:45 AM »
this has me swamped. ???

just who is releasing the 1991 series on dvd?
sony?warners?mgm?mpi?i thought that mpi had the exclusive rights to distribute both series(66-71 and 91)but not either of the movies.

since the original series ran for so many episodes it seems like the profit potential there is almost limitless(think of what we've all bought)where as the 1991 version only aired 12 or so episodes.how much profitability do they actually think is going to come from that release?
die-hard fans already own this on video and even if they "upgrade" to the dvd format we realistically can't be talking about more than a few thousand(at best)shelling out big dollars for this release.

b.t.w. i have so much more of the original seies to get through the 1991 series isn't even on the horizon.
