Current Talk '06 II / Re: The Salem Branch - Your thoughts
« on: November 05, 2006, 05:44:31 PM »
Oh well, other than that, I am glad just to be reading something that is both a continuation of the show, and not a fanfiction (although I have seen the arguments that it IS a fanfiction, however, if this is the case, then the entire works of Anne Rice should be classified as fanfiction.)

One poster, I believe, called it fanfiction, and I suppose it is in the sense that LP did not have any hand in creating the series or its characters.  However, it is a professional novel, and this is why I'm so critical of it, just as I would point a finger at Anne Rice (whose characters are completely original, btw, so I don't get your analogy) if she were guilty of making the same writing mistakes.  Fans are standing in long lines to purchase this book, and for the money I feel she should have done better.  And I have read better [free] fanfic on the net.

I did offer that The Salem Branch qualifies as a Mary Sue, though I never explained that comment.  LP introduced an original character (Antoinette)-- a stand-in for herself who is overly perfect-- while the flaws of other fictional characters, who are not her creations, are emphasized.  The author even admits in Q&As to providing Antoinette with some of her own personal experiences.

I did notice something though. Everywhere and everything causes leaves to move, in every possible way. Cars cause leaves to fly, digging makes leaves fall in holes, and leaves turn colors of gemstones. Is it overkill, I don't think so (so far). I am still hoping I will see the symbolism once I have finished the book.

Ha!  Yes, the autumn leaves.  We discussed that in the preceding pages of this topic.  It does get quite annoying, at least that's my be-leaf.  ::)

Current Talk '06 II / Re: Burke Devlin....like him or hate him?
« on: November 02, 2006, 11:02:00 PM »
Didn't like either Burke as characters-though I think the first Burke was a much better actor than Anthony George. When George later went to One Life To Live, he played the doctor the same way he played Burke, so I think he could only really play himself!

LOL, rainingwolf!  And AG had already played a character in the early 60s that was identical to his Burke Devlin and Will Vernon (geez, the names even sound alike) in "The Alfred Hitchock Hour."  When my local station replays the first season of The Untouchables, I must check it out to see if Agent Allison is the same outwardly patient yet subtly manipulative perfectionist.  ::)

For our newbie captioners:

A line or 2 is fine, but scenes will now be removed per the forum guideline regarding fan fiction that all cousins agreed to during registration.

Captions containing more than 2 lines of dialogue will be removed.  This is also explained in the other topic pinned to the top of Caption This!:

posts with more than 2 lines of dialogue are removed.

and is repeated throught the Caption This! board, such as:

If it helps, this is acceptable:

character #1:  blah
character #2:  blah

This is not:

character #1:  blah
character #2:  blah
character #1 or #3:  blah

And this isn't acceptable either:

#1 said or did blah.  Then #2 said or did blah.  Then #1 or #3 said or did blah.

We're not counting lines and removing posts arbitrarily.  We're removing scenes, period.

Hope that cleared it up for you.

Also:

Please remember not to contribute captions in scene form (setup/postscript).

To clarify, please don't cap action that occurs before or after (example-- ::runs from room:: ) or your caption may be subject to removal.

If anyone has questions, "To Caption This!" is open to posting.  Thanks!

Obviously, the codes still work for the extra Halloween smileys, but MB retired them from the smiley listings for the time being.  :D

What would be nice, if it's possible, would be other holiday themed smiley's-- ... St. Patrick's Day-leprechaun smiley's
Okay, it's just the one.  Search the Testing board for "shamrock" and the code will come up in a post.

it may have been "Honey" or "Honeybee" and she was from Broadway.

I was just rereading that chapter last night.  Really.  :D  It was Honey or Honeypot, and I'm highly suspicious of that clue to the identity of the theater actress originally cast in the role since it came from KLS, and her memories haven't always stood up well to challenge.

If I may suggest a 3rd solution-- empowering Connie.  Here's the fixer page for VCRs.  You might find the brand and model # in the database pages and possibly a cure for your problem, and more importantly how to get that tape out without causing further damage.  But please read the safety instructions on the site first.  Good luck.

Have no problem w/a link replacing an image,

To explain, attachments should be DS related and the poster should own the copyright.  Even under those conditions, if it's online or the poster has his/her own webspace, linking is much appreciated.   [hall2_cheesy]

but the link doesn't work.   [hall2_cry]

How odd.  It works for me, even in other browsers.

I haven't been so scared by something from DS since the camera panned the phone cord in Quentin's room.  [hall_shocked][/size]

I thought the bunny floaty was pretty scary.

There's nothing we can't face...

Except for bunnies.

UCLA's Hammer Museum is exhibiting works by Romanian brothers Gert and Uwe Tobias, multiple medium artists, through January 14.  The Hammer Projects website includes this woodcut on paper as one of their selected works:

Cool makeup, Michael.
