Title: Episode 463 Pull the Blinds, Barnabas!
Post by: Janet the Wicked on April 04, 2009, 01:16:07 PM
I gotta tell you, I love this episode. Here is yet another resident of Collinsport, in this case Tony Peterson, peering through Barnabas' window. One would think that Barnabas would have learned his lesson and had the foresight to draw the shade once in a while, what with all the nosey relatives he has. I love also that Tony had the moxie to confront Carolyn about her being in her cousin's arms. What a scene!

Barnabas never learns, does he? All through the show, relatives and strangers keep peering through the Old House windows, finding out secrets. You'd think that Barnabas would've drawn the drapes after David and Jason McGuire started peeping.  [easter_cheesy]

Maybe it's Barnabas's subconscious desire to be caught.

You've got a point here, Mag.
Lemme see... David Collins had a wicked habit of looking in the window to see Josette, I think Joe Haskell peered in once, Miss Hoffman certainly looked in, Jason [spoiler]found out about the jewels that way...[/spoiler]
One would think a vampire would want to hide his identity, but it almost seems as though Barn was seeking attention. Barn is often seen sitting in his flattened out cushion chair, admiring his family history, not paying attention to anyone peering through his open window...
Well, perhaps they were after his gorgeous night jacket, which I would have been after...

If he closed the blinds, he would have to reopen them every time he wanted to put his face against the window and recite an incantation.

Me and you are watching the same episodes Janet The Wicked, how funny.  I just finished this one last night.  He truly NEVER learns.  And what is up with Julia and David opening the big window to get it.  It seems as if this window would lock! [easter_huh]

Here's the capture/quote that inspired this topic:

1968: Ep #463 - Tony: 'I always heard the idle rich were
decadent.'

Little did Tony know how truly decadent the Collinses really were.  [easter_grin]

Actually, the capture that inspired this topic is the one where Tony is peering through the Old House window at Barnabas sucking on Carolyn's neck.

Oh, you mean this one:

1968: Ep #463 - Tony witnesses Barnabas and Carolyn

Oops - I forgot all about the Robservations slideshow.  [easter_cheesy]

in late 1967/early 1968 they seemed to really be gearing up tony peterson to be a major character.

first with carolyn and then with cassandra.

as someone mentioned recently at first he seemed to be sort of a replacement for a burke devlin-type character.when he first stormed into collinwood demanding to see roger he reminded me of early burke...a collinsport local with a grudge against the money and influence of the collins family.

but by mid-1968 he seems to have become somewhat obsolete with monsters coming out of the woodwork.that type of character is never prominently featured on the series again.

Yeah, they never explained what happened to him, did they? Tony Peterson just sort of disappeared as Chris Jennings became more integral to the storyline. It's too bad they didn't use the character more. I really enjoyed Jerry Lacey and would've liked seeing him play the normal/good guy a bit more on the show; and it was interesting to have that sort of character contrast with the supernatural shenanigans, like Burke earlier in the series.

I agree re Tony Peterson--another lost opportunity.

I wish I could recall when we last catch sight of him, but I don't.   I presume that Jerry Lacy, as was the case with so many actors on the series, worked without a contract.

I'm pretty sure Tony's last ep is #578. I don't remember exactly what his last scene is, but I do recall that's the ep with [spoiler]faux-Carolyn and Tony gets attacked by Adam.[/spoiler]

I was surprised to see Tony back in 1968 post-1795, and didn't want him back, but at least in 1968 he wasn't being made to do his Bogart impression as he was in 1967.   Anyway, as far as I'm concerned, as soon as he got Trask as a role there should have been no looking back.

yes lacy's "bogie" shtick was cringe-inducing.

he must have been an off-contract player because he often disappeared for months.

if i recall it was a very long time between his 1897 trask and his next character in 1970pt.
incidentally i found that character to be somewhat unnecessary...he was sort of involved in the forgettable demeon edwards subplot but not really important to the storyline as a whole.

But the PT Trask was essencial to the storyline! He was heavily involved (at least for a while) in the murder mystery subplot! [smrty]

What I couldn't figure out is why they made his character in PT1970 another Trask.  Why not make him Tony?  If Julia Hoffman can be turned from a medical doctor in normal time into a maid in parallel time, why not turn a lawyer into a butler?

It's all in the name: Trask. His name alone sealed his (predictable) fate. The poor guy was typecast within the series itself.

Why Trask, not Peterson?   Because PT was supposed to be filled with fascinating parallels and opposites.  Seeing a Trask pop up in a parallel present day is like chocolate cake.    Look!   It's Trask!!!   And he's subserviant!   Seeing a Trask pop up in a storyline, those are among the best DS moments.

After the cool novelty wore off, though, there was nothing more to the character.   I imagine JL fuming off camera about how he was wasted in this storyline.

A friend of mine is watching the parallel time storyline for the first time now.  She's thrilled with Trask--because he's the only one in the show's history with sense enough to lock the doors.  [easter_grin]

I will have to take note this third time around the bend.   This is only my third time watching it through. I can't seem to get into the WP because I am so enthralled with 1795 now....Alas....
