Very Cool Article
« on: August 31, 2007, 01:25:48 AM »
Maybe you all have seen this, but it is new to me:

http://www.washingtonhistory.com/ScenesPast/images/SP_1006.pdf

This article is about Seaview Terrace and includes a picture of the house at its original location on Dupont Circle in DC, and a 1929 postcard of it in Newport.

The article appeared originally in 2006 in a DC publication, The Intowner

My goodness, where in the world did you come across this? I'm going to print it out and keep it with my DS memorabilia. Thank you for sharing, Sheenasma. Thanks!
I get a kick out of these guys who think they're so clean, when all the time they're trying to cover up their dirt.

Indeed!  And to think I used to work less than 100 steps from the intersection where the house used to stand!   8)

I've always thought it would be fascinating to see pictures of the interiors of the two separate original houses to see exactly how they were eventually combined. Unfortunately, though, such pictures seem to be extremely rare.  :(

And incidentally, the portion of the stained glass window that's depicted in the article is the top portion of the lower left pane in what DS fans would consider the window above the landing in the foyer (though there is no such landing there in the actual house).

That's fantastic, thank you!

Did you know that the postcard image can be purchased as an art print on both allposters.com and art.com?

Thanks, sheenasma, great article! I've enjoyed reading about this house since my fandom began in 92, and have pondered the correct pronunciation of "Salve" as it pertains to the university. Rhymes with have? I've always figured that it did. I'm sure I would cringe if that's how I pronounced it only to be corrected by someone more in the know.

I think so.  That's how Opie Taylor pronounced it.    I'll ask the next salve salesman who comes to the door.

If you're talking about a topical medication, it rhymes with have. If you're talking about a Latin phrase (Salve Regina means "Hail Queen" -- regina is the feminine form of rex), it's pronounced like Sal-VAY. (That would be the Catholic Church's typical pronunciation. A Latin professor would tell you to pronounce the v like a w.) The hymn "Hail Holy Queen," which can be heard at Catholic services, uses "salve regina" in the chorus, though the verses are now sung in English.
